My fosters always know what "come here" means by the time they leave, even if they don't always listen. But these guys usually do, so I started asking Suitcase to come whenever I saw him pick up a toy, and here we are.

  • Suitcase not only brings it to you but navigates a gauntlet every time πŸ˜‚

    That is genuinely impressive.

He has always been a little quieter and more observant than the others. He learned to just give Groucho one little affectionate bump and then walk away almost immediately, which is why he is the only one Groucho has ever licked or allowed to lick him.

  • Guys, let’s help Rain raise enough money to keep them! There are links in her bio. She needs enough to ensure that she won’t become homeless again before she can adopt them.

    Umm, not exactly.

There is no risk I will become homeless before I can adopt them, because I have three months rent in the bank.

But if I don’t get closer to a year’s rent in the bank and at least 1000 new subscribers, which would cover basic necessities, I need to start looking for a cheap room and put most of my stuff in storage yet again.

Because that would give me time to find a new job and/or become better at all the social media things I did so poorly when Harpo was alive, which would have earned me enough to pay cash for a house if I had done them from 2020 on.

  • Already got the general idea and doing so well πŸ’•

    He is a bright boy

  • Omg this was the serotonin boost I needed today, thank you. Suitcase alone was a gift but when all of them chase after the toy πŸ˜‚

I am settled in for the evening with these three laying on my legs, editing my way through footage of all seven. It takes SO MUCH longer than Harpo videos did.

He was such a pro that I knew when and where he was going to do his thing, and he deliberately dropped things in the middle of the frame, even if he didn't really understand that was what he was doing. The vast majority of the footage was really good just it was.

With kittens, the vast majority of it is unusable. You have to run long videos at high speed, snip out the best bits, do a rough assembly, then start rearranging and trimming to get to whatever your end goal is.

That often means the audio usually ends up sounding really odd, so you either mute it and add music, or mute little bits of it and paste in audio you extracted from the parts you didn't use. Like if I was talking to them, some clips will have random words. So when I'm snipping out the best bits, I also snip out some thumps and meows to have in reserve to fix that.

So far you have come up with some great pieces of them, though!

Each of the different colored rooms from the rainbow compilation is good for at least two really good ones. I just grabbed a little from each.

You seem to be the master at editing, but has AI taken all those jobs too?

No, it hasn't, and that is something I have pursued. I'm not really a master, though, so options are limited. But there are a couple of Harpo fans that are interested in having me cut highlight reels from their live streams for them.

You might want to offer services for actors who want their reels cut. In this day and age, actors tape themselves and their reels are important and need to be updated once a year or more. I know someone who charges $199/reel cut and all she does is pick out the parts that really show the essence of the actor and sequence them.

I first learned to edit on actual film and then FinalCutPro in college, and learned the basics of AVID when I was in LA. But when I started editing cat videos, I just used simple stuff like iMovie and later CapCut.

I have been wanting to go back to FinalCutPro for ages, but have not been able to justify the cost, when my videos are simple enough that free software is sufficient.

But while I hardly ever moved audio around with Harpo videos beyond making sure an exceptional meow from when he was out of frame got heard, I have been doing it a lot more with Groucho yelling at the neighbors and the kittens. That would definitely be easier in FinalCutPro.

I get really hung up on how loud and labored my breathing is. It started sounding like that when I was in that moldy house, and has gotten worse as I neglected myself more and more. That's one reason streaming makes me so anxious. FinalCutPro would make it possible to minimize that through equalization instead of just lowering the volume for a few frames, which can end up sounding odd.

I thought Final Cut Pro was killed off by Apple a few years back. Did they bring it back? I am not a Mac person so I might have missed it. I was under the impression that Adobe was back as the industry standard.

Either way if having that package was going to be a help I would comtribute to it. I personally use Wondershare by Filmora which is pretty robust. I bought a lifetime license way back, it's been a great deal for me. I mostly edit my auditions and the odd miscellaneous work or silly video with it.

PS I had a very brief high school course on editing with film too. I found editing audio tape very easy but less so the video.

I have used Filmora, but I do not want to have to use the internet to edit video on my hard drive.

I have used Adobe, but I do not want to pay for software over and over and over and over again.

Adobe has become the standard, even though it is much slower, buggier, and more prone to crashing than FinalCut, because FinalCut sucks for collaborative projects. But many editors who use Adobe for collaborations prefer FinalCut for solo projects.

  • Omgggggg!!!! Harpo sent this baby to you Rain!!!! πŸ˜‡πŸ˜‡πŸ˜‡

  • Excellent!

  • So cute and he is doing such a good job. Well done suitcase πŸ₯°πŸ₯°

  • Clever clever Suitcase! This made me smile so much, ooooh I cannot wait to follow his (their!) journey into fully fledged burglar kittehs!

  • Look at him! Go Suitcase! Y'all, let's help Rain keep Suitcase and his grey siblings!

We are snuggling in bed right now, and I don't want to get up, as they go back at noon.

I'm very glad I got a break in the weather. We've had two atmospheric rivers dump so much rain on the PNW that there is massive flooding in Washington. The wind in Portland last night was so wild that I heard a lot of loud thumps as branches fell on the roof, and my pop up canopy would have flown off if two legs hadn't been staked down. The wind pulled the other two legs off the blocks, even though each one has two sandbags on it.

But right now it is warm and sunny out. Too warm, actually. I don't remember ever seeing Mt. Hood so naked in December. It should be covered with snow. Next year's fire season could be really bad.

  • Aaahhhh I love him so much 😻

  • "Thanks, Suitcase!"

I used to say a variety of things to Harpo when he brought me things. But people really fixated on the "thanks, Harpo," and I realized the repetition would be funny.

I'm torn about their names. This litter's shelter names were hilarious, but the effect is somewhat lost when it's only three of them instead of seven. They're still funny, but Suitcase feels a little odd to say, more so than Airport or Passport.

Ticket is now named Jack, so naturally I will be calling him Jacket.

I absolutely love you calling him Jacket! πŸ˜†

I used to say "ticket ticket ticket ticket" very fast, and he'd come running, so I'm pleased that he has a name that can be turned into such a phonetically similar nickname.

  • A kitten Harpo in the making!

  • Such fun in training! Rain, you are an excellent teacher with these excellent students!

I've always preferred animals to people. I read a book by Lassie's trainer when I was about 10, and started begging my parents for a puppy to train, as the family husky was only willing to humor me up to a certain point. I got a Scottie when I was 11.

There was a shabby little riding school nearby, with a few tired, misfit horses, and a few good ones that never stayed very long before someone bought them. I learned the basics of horse training there, and then more about both horses and dogs working for a couple a few miles away. She bred smooth collies, and he had a few misfit horses, albeit of a much higher quality, retired from show rings, race tracks, and steeplechase courses.

  • Omg so cute!!!
