They want me to pay them to show a video of me crying about my dead cat to just over 2% of my followers.

  • Geeze, that's so grim

    It’s despicable.

I agree. May we all find community in these dark times.

The billionaires don’t want that, so they’re making it as hard as possible.

Social media income allowed SO many people marginalized by race, sexuality, or disability to supplement their income so they could live and not just exist. But it’s better for them if we are just hanging on by our fingernails, so they are taking it away.

It makes me sick to think about how much money those assholes are making from desperate people trying to get their views and income back, not knowing that it doesn’t actually work. You may as well light that money on fire.

ETA: does anyone reading this remember what this community was like before Reddit decided they needed to increase their profit margins by killing the third-party tools that so many people used to use the site? I miss it so much.

I know. I was reading a post from a climatologist about the difference in her views from threads to bluesky, it's bonkers.

Yeah, I like bluesky for my politically oriented human account, but I had to deactivate it for my mental health. I still use the cat account.

I totally get that. A lot of my favorite people from Twitter are over there, but I had to take a break.

I had a real problem with it, since I tend to dissociate really frequently to a really extreme degree. I finally had to just deactivate it AND tell half a dozen mutuals to text me me if I logged into it again.

I have so far been able to resist the urge to use the cat account to search for the half dozen people I engaged with the most, just to keep abreast of things.

I don't want to keep abreast of things anymore. I'm tired of knowing so much. I was trying to warn people in 2016 that Trump was a Hitler-loving white supremacist dictator wannabe who would deliberately crash the economy and stack the Supreme Court to destroy everything FDR and LBJ did.

  • What makes this even more insulting is that they want more than a dollar per thousand views.

Because they used to pay a little less or a little more than a dollar per thousand views, but I just got paid $140 for over 2 million views for one of only three videos that did well this year, all of which were about his death.

I quit the creator fund after that.

  • That's.... absolutely awful.

It’s the insult after the injury of repeatedly labeling Harpo videos as being ineligible for recommendation by the algorithm on the grounds that they are “unoriginal, low quality, or QR code content.”

I have a support ticket open about that one, because that is outrageous

  • that's very sad. it totally misses the point that people are logging on because we care about YOU and don't want to see more schmaltz we want to see the bare truth, which is sad enough. I grieve with thee; sincerely, I was with both of mine when they took their last breath and I still double-guess myself. for my girl cat AND for my boy cat. I just have to keep reminding myself that I can't change the past. what's done is done; I did the best I could.

I admit, I do have an advantage as a Christian; when it gets too bad, I pray that God, my Father, will make the thoughts go away. they are not glorifying to Him, nor edifying to me.
