• Given their ability to take down prey much larger than themselves, how big do you think a marten would need to be in order to be a threat to humans?

    I think you're describing a wolverine

There is a story that my friend told me about his mother.

His parents were at their reindeer herd, however the place they were in was a bit difficult to drive in, especially since they were 2 on a single snowmobile. His dad then saw a couple of reindeer in a thicket, so he had to go and move them out of there. So in order to go get them, his wife jumped off the snowmobile and decided that she would wait while he goes and gets them.

He drove off, and she stayed behind to wait. After standing there for around 5 minutes, she sees something walk up towards her. At first she thinks its just a curious fox, however when it started getting closer, that's when she realised that it was a wolverine. She started shouting, making noice, everything to scare it off. But this wolverine wasn't turning around, it was starting to speed up instead, to the point that it was now running towards her. Luckily, her husband had seen what was happening and turned around. The wolverine got to around 20 meters from her before it saw the snowmobile, and turned around.

Considering a wolverine can kill an adult reindeer, even moose on rare occasions, just imagine what it could do to a human

exactly. i think a lone giant river otter could also take down an adult man in water with enough time and persistence. honey badgers and regular american/european badgers are also no joke. one could seriously injure you if they can get you on the ground and avoid your stomp attack.

There is an anecdote I’ve heard about that a zookeeper inadvertently triggering an attack by a giant otter pair after they thought he was threatening their cub, presumably without taking proper precautions, and they savagely attacked and killed the keeper. We classify the giant otter as “code red” at my organization, meaning they are considered in the top tier of danger to be around and keepers are not permitted to share the same space as the otters.

totally makes sense. them slippery sausages can fend off jaguar attacks.

I mean, that thing just took down a small deer with what looked like not a lot of effort, so I feel like if it felt threatened that martin could wreck someone…

  • Mustelids are incredible! If I had to choose my favourite carnivore... I couldn't. But probably stoat.

I worked with a Tayra at a animal rescue centre in Costa Rica and fell in love with the species

  • Dude poor thing. They can never catch a break
