House was constructed ca 1965 which would make this the second generation upstairs AC or result of an addition cuz I think these units were late 70s - early 1980s models. Systems getting swapped out anyways so cut the power to it, installers will tear it out Monday 🫡

Just took this one out last week lol the bottom of the unit didn’t exist anymore. Thing was trashed
Probably still blew cold air.
Na It had no charge. Client didn’t even remember the last time it turned on
York Tombzone.
And the Federal Pacific panel that will put you under your tombstone.
we work at this apartment complex that's older and there are tons of these still around. we have been changing them out because the heat strips in the air handler keep falling apart and burning up wiring.
They should get rid of the FPE panel ASAP... those are known fire hazards.
There was a place in my hometown that had a bunch of those Tombstone units still running.
Yep that was part of the quote, thankfully this was for a swap out already in mind. Gonna put it up on my shop wall with the ancient thermostats
Put in your personal HVAC museum
I know you must have one
More like a vintage commercial refrigeration museum but HVAC is sprinkled in here and there
An old tombstone condenser. We keep a double shaft motor around just for these. They are almost all gone.
1st time changing out a motor. Boss said, go replace this motor. install motor backwards. he ask me if air was pulling or push out. the grill... got to install it twice...lol
I gained a customer and lost a sale on one of those with a few drops of oil. They thought they had a bad motor and just wanted a quote. If it is something easy to check, I double check the previous tech's diagnosis even on a free estimate. The fan wasn't locked up, but definitely not spinning freely. I did what I do best. I oiled it while working the shaft. Had it back running like a champ in a few minute. The customer started to get pissed that the last company told him that motors don't have grease or oil ports anymore and you just replace them when they are bad. I told him that in all fairness there probably hasn't been an oil-able motor in a new unit in the last guy's lifetime.
It’s fine till you need a fan blade. Lol. That’s the killer. We have a wall of odd fan blades. I think I’ve scabbed all we have left of those. Haven’t seen any that will work. Tried matching one up with no luck
Still work though?
Did the sun rise? If yes, then the York Tombstone was still working.
The first one I ever worked on looked like it was dropped out of an airplane in the middle of the Pacific and washed up on shore 5 years later. The capacitor was about the same size as the compressor. Thing fired right up and had a cold sweaty suction line and purred like a kitty kat.
York probably put out a contract on the engineer that designed that thing.
Kicking the can down the road, still blows cold air/suction line still sweats customers just ready for an update
Did you tell the customer this old one will still last longer than his new coil will???
She’s a bute Clark!

I’d love to find one these in a retrofit a throw it in my own house.
1st one to say I remember installing those.
He can finally rest lol
Double whammy. That FP panel is a fire hazard as well.Â
I’ve replaced one of those York condensers. It was still running!
Of all the shitty panel brands, FPE is the worst. I work in an area with lots of FPE, Zinsco and Bulldog and FPE takes the cake for most hazardous.

Absolute time capsule. That patina tells stories.
Florida would’ve eaten this alive years ago. Really cool piece of HVAC history.
Earlier this year we cleaned out an old shop my company bought, found a ton of old tools and signage, and I made this image as a joke for our group chat. Fits perfectly here.
Great share.
Borg-Warner baby!
Don't tell them there shiny new super high efficient unit with environmentally friendly refrigerant will only work for 10 years.
I have a customer with one. The compressor has no readable information on it. The unit itself has no info on it. I did not know what period of time these are from.

Please don't suggest that systems are designed to fail immediately after their warranty period. There is no legitimate verifiable evidence to support that opinion.
This isn't a conspiracy theory sub.
The roof. The roof. The roof is on fire.
We don't need no water.
In my area, there's a bunch of those tombstones still working.
She's a beaut.
Ol faithful
I see federal pacific panels all the time.
I’m not HVAC but this spurred a memory. When I was a little kid (80s) our house had a tombstone compressor. There was a bunch of mint growing around it so every time it kicked on in the summer is smelled like mint.
Id love to have one of those haha
Wow… you found an accent fire starter with a York tombstone

I work as a building engineer, maintaining units from the 80s. All we have is FPE and I hate it lol
