SMYRNA, Tenn. (WSMV) - One person is dead, and one person is injured after a shooting at a birthday party in Smyrna, according to officials with the town of Smyrna.

On Saturday night, officers were called to Lara’s Event Center at 413 Nissan Drive around 11 p.m. for reports of a shooting.

Officials said at the time of the shooting, a juvenile’s birthday party was being held at the venue with an estimated 50 people in attendance.

During the event, officials stated in a press release that an altercation occurred between multiple people inside the building. Officials said the altercation escalated into a shooting when a juvenile suspect discharged a firearm several times inside the event center.

Two people were struck by gunfire, officials said. One victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. The other victim, who wasn’t involved in the fight, was transported by LifeFlight to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for treatment.

Officers found and detained the juvenile suspect outside the building and found that they were reportedly in possession of a firearm reported stolen out of the Nashville area.

Multiple witnesses spoke with officers at the scene, and investigators reviewed and obtained security video footage of the incident.

The juvenile suspect was charged with multiple offenses and taken to the Juvenile Detention Center, the town said

Officials said the investigation remains ongoing.

The Lara’s Event Center released the following statement (translated from Spanish):

“It is with deep regret that we inform you that last night, a tragic incident occurred during a private event held at our facility, in which a young man sadly lost his life.

As a business and as a community, we are devastated by what has happened. We express our deepest condolences to the victim’s family, friends and loved ones. There are not enough words to ease such a great pain, and we join together in solidarity and respect for this irreparable loss.

The event occurred unexpectedly and outside of the operation, organization and protocols of our event hall. From the very beginning, we have fully cooperated with the relevant authorities, who are in charge of the investigation to clarify what happened.

Out of respect for the legal process and, above all, to the affected family, we will not issue any further comments until the authorities complete their work.

We appreciate the community’s understanding at this very difficult time and reiterate our commitment to safety, respect, and responsibility at each and every event held at our facility."

Lara’s Event Center said that anyone who left their belongings at the event can pick them up from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
