Hi, I'm going to be in Athens for two months.

I swim every week, but a Greek man told me that you need a certificate to swim in the municipal pools.

Does this apply to tourists and occasional swims?

Do some pools not require it?

Thanks

  • Municipal pools require two doctor’s certificates: one from a dermatologist saying that you don’t have any infectious skin conditions, and another from a cardiologist saying your heart is in good condition for exercise. I’m pretty sure they don’t make exceptions, normally you have to submit your certificates to complete registration, get a card, pay as required and then you can go swimming. Not sure if this applies to private pools of which there are not many. Only one I’m aware of is Holme’s Place at various Athens locations (you don’t mention where you’re staying), you might want to inquire with them. I’ve heard mixed things about them though, including being expensive with bad customer service, so only do so if you run out of options. For municipal pools it will be required that you have googles, flip flops and a swimming cap. You might also want to get in contact with the municipal pool closest to you asking if you can provide certificates from you home country, this way you can save time and register straight away. For performing the tests in Athens, you can schedule at a diagnostic center (make sure they have a cardiology department) or hospital near you. Cardiologist usually performs an electrocardiogram and triplex test, sometimes a fatigue test as well for the swimming certificate.

Wow it's crazy Thank you for theses informations

Not all municipal pools require a dermatologist. So you better ask what is needed from your local pool.

  • I don’t know about municipal pools, but the sea is right there without any need for certificates

in feb it's a little bit cold for me :)

  • My understanding is that this is correct; I think it's a doctor's note or something like that. Depending on how badly you want to swim in a municipal pool, it might be worth the trouble. However, there aren't that many municipal pools in Athens as far as I'm aware and if you're not staying near one, it might not be worth the hassle getting the note and getting to the pool. Hotel swimming pools don't require it, but I would imagine you need to be a guest to use their pool.

    I don't will stay in a hotel

You have to chose either you don't or you will.

  • If it’s once a week, you could try making the drive out to lake vouliagmeni. The water temperature is generally nice enough to swim any time of year.
