• Did it make a screaming sound originally?

Originally yes, when opening the cover without another page. As that would stop it from screaming and conserve the battery. But unfortunately over time the batteries in these have naturally died, due to being 30 years old at this point.

I have seen some people peel back the cover for the mechanism (Where it says Boo dude! If you want me to stop screaming turn the page) and replace the battery. But it can be a tricky thing to do, as they were never really made with the thought of being replaced in mind. So most people just don't bother, and as a result ones that still scream go for a higher premium than those that don't.

Ultimately I don't see the appeal, as I think a copy that doesn't scream (or have the eyes light up, in the case of other Monster Editions) is just as good as one that still does.

Oh, cool. Even if it doesn’t scream, I didn’t notice until I got home it reprints books 1, 2, and 4. I’m excited to start from the beginning.

Indeed! I've always really loved the cover on this first edition. With Curly in bed with drool (the bulldog). I personally think it looks cozy! Another great cover by Mr. Jacobus!

While I’ve never read one before. I’ve always admired the covers. They are all great artwork and this one is amazing too.

Whilst I enjoy and love all of Mr. Jacobus's artwork, there are some pieces I really love and enjoy a bit more than others, just out of personal preference. This is one of them, as I really enjoy the bedtime esque style. As I (along with presumably many others) enjoy reading in bed, especially in the quiet hours before night.

Other covers I particular enjoy a bit above the others would be the More Tales To Give You Goosebumps cover (the one with the skeletons in front of the campfire), the More & More & More Tales To Give You Goosebumps cover (the one with Curly and Drool skiing), along with the covers for Give Yourself Goosebumps #8 and #9 (The Curse of the Creeping Coffin and The Knight in Screaming Armor respectively.

Those are all cool covers. I guess I’m gonna have to collect more books now.

I'd recommend only collecting them if you plan on reading them. They are good covers, but I wouldn't collect them just for their covers.

Yeah I’m going to read these ones to see if I like them first.

Well then in that case I hope you enjoy the stories! The Monster Editions are also hardcover (as I'm sure you know) so they are more durable than the regular paperbacks.

Scared the shit out of me as a child

  • I just realized this is Goosebumps 1, 2 and 4. Why skip 3?

Number #3 was skipped because it is Monster Blood, and there is a "Monster Blood Collection" that has all the stories.

Oh ok, that makes sense. Now I have to track that one down.

I thought 3 was monster blood and dummy was 7?

My apologies! You are correct, but my argument still applies. As there is a Monster Blood Collection, and that is why it was skipped.

Monster blood? Ok this one I have to find.

  • These were always broken whenever I'd come across them at bookstores. However, I have the one that contains the Night of The Living Dummy trilogy, and the light function on it still works.

I need to find the rest of these now!

  • I absolutely remember these as well as the Fear Street line.

  • It used to scream, but usually used copies have it disabled

Probably parents who got tired of it, or kids trying to read at night without a screaming snitch alerting everyone they opened a book, lol

Yeah it sounds more annoying than fun. Fun for a moment then annoying trying to read anywhere.

It sounds like it'd be fun the first two times or so, annoying when you open it in public.

Still, the bind up idea wasn't bad. I wish some of the reprints had three books together like this.

  • AHHHHHHHH is the sound. Like a scared skeleton witch woman. I loved and missed that book forever even now. Doesn't it have at least one of the Say Cheese and Die stories in it too? I would annoy everyone openly that front cover. I got yelled at over it at some point. 😭

Say cheese and die #4, it’s mentioned on the back cover in pic 2.

  • I still have mine and yeah, it used to scream every time you opened it. Got kind of old and awkward for silent reading time.

  • I also got this hardcover! I'm sure when they were new it must have been pretty cool to get. Heck, I still think it's cool now.

  • Sorry, I’m just focusing on Curly in bed with Drool

  • It says it in words bud. Lol Turn the page or else he won't stop screaming.
