am I alone on this? i started theory crafting to my friends and i sounded insane trying to explain who this could possibly be because they looked like Dottore’s gloves but color swapped… they called me crazy and said they’re black and blue. personally, i don’t see it. they look white and gold to me.
I’m a huge Dottore fan so I’m pretty disappointed in myself for this blunder 💔

I can actually flip between modes for the dress and I'm seeing the same thing here with his gloves.
I see it as mostly white & gold too, but the white has bluish tint & the gold has greyish tint. This is the same ss I saved from the post & dragged the brightness slider all the way to -100, which at least to me is definite blue & black.
Scientifically, no one's photoreceptors are the exact same & lighting also plays a role.
I actually think it’s not because of a difference in photoreceptors, just a difference in perspective. As you showed, the glove when the brightness is turned down is black and blue, however when turned up is white and gold. The shot is very ambiguous in lighting, the background being completely dark while there is soft lighting on the glove. If someone perceives the image as light, the gloves will look black and blue, whereas if someone perceived it as dark, the gloves will look white and gold (or similar, cause I see light brown). I’m not sure what causes a shift in perspective but since so many people say that they can see both glove colors it’s probably not a difference in photoreceptors.

I color picked the image and it's literally light blue and dark blue gray as you said, which are literally just black and blue but lighter, how is it closer to white and gold lmao.

Back when "the dress" first as a thing I remember I did briefly see it as blue/black but then something shifted and ever since I've only been able to see it white/gold. How your brain makes sense of color perception is funny like that sometimes.

Also you were right the first time, the dress is black and blue. The person who first posted the pic posted another in more neutral lighting after the fact. Personally I can see black, gold and blue depending on how I look at it and where I focus but never white.

The dress always appears white & gold to me no matter what (though the white always has slight bluish tint anyway & the gold is always kinda dull/greyish), but this one is weird. First time I saw this post, the glove was white & gold to me with the same tint. Night mode (yellow filter) on & off did nothing. Then, I went ahead to watch the video with night mode on, same. Night mode off, rewind to the same part, it's blue & black. Now with night mode on again, it's still blue & black. The brain is weird af. Probably gonna reset after a few hours because I always see white & gold by default.

Its because youre interpreting the surroundings as low light, due to the dark backround and blueish tone. It's actually a bright white light coming from the top right, which washes out the blue and black a little.
I think u maybe colour blind bcz man those colours are same black and blue saying from artist point just lighting is lighter but still they are easy to recongnise

If you look at the darker parts of the first image (shadows), you can notice black and blue, but if you focus on the brighter colours (highlights) it looks like white and gold.

I saw gold and white only at first but found a method how to "overcome" it - zoomed in to the max on the darkest part (the 3 fingers together and shadow below them), covered the light part in right upper corner with finger, turned off my phone screen and closed my eyes, waited for ~15 seconds imagining washed out black and blue. (Kept the finger covering bright place through all that) When I opened my eyes and turned screen on again I saw the gloves as black and blue and can't see gold and white anymore.

The first one gives that impression because of the lighting, the background is dark, so you’d expect the black parts of the gloves to be even darker, but it’s not. So your brain tries to guess that it’s actually white and gold

The first image can’t be misinterpreted as white and gold because it is currently being hit by a light source. If it were in the shadows/shade you could misinterpret it. (of course this is actually just an animated scene so real world physics don’t apply. Which is another reason why it’s obviously not white and gold.)

Nope, in this shot, that’s really how they look to a lot of people, me included. Sometimes, certain color and shade contrasts can make your brain glitch out trying to interpret what it’s looking at, and it interprets it wrong.
