I recently got an HP Victus 15 and am extremely worried about its longevity since HP has a bad reputation about flimsy BQ, right?

Specs: AMD Ryzen 5 8645HS; RTX 3050 6GB 50W TGP; 16GB DDR5; 512GB; FHD IPS 144hz

  • Usage: Very random. Browsing, BeamNGdrive, occasionally Blender, sometimes coding, VMs and editing.
  • Laptop's always on a cooling pad at all times, whenever being used. Often used on bed, but with the cooling pad elevated to make sure it doesn't overheat. Cooling pad is pretty basic with 6 small fans spinning at 2,900 RPM. It's probably no better than a laptop stand but stands are much better than nothing so whatever.
  • I'll change the thermal paste every 2 years
  • I clean the exterior every 2-3 days using a microfiber cloth, an anti-static brush and some cleaning gel. I make sure the device is off and to never spray on the device itself but only on the cloth and in small little quantities. I'll clean the insides every 6 months or so. Please recommend the best time to do it, 6 months or 8? Or per year?
  • Power plan settings: [plugged in]  best performance; display off 3 minutes sleep 15 minutes | [on battery] best power efficiency; display off 1 minute sleep 3 minutes
  • Almost always plugged in. Victus (tragically) has no 80% limiter. I thought of manually plugging/unplugging but got worried if that'd cause more problems long-term especially since it's a mid-end HP. Please, help. Give some advice. I'm currently just trusting the overcharge protection/BMS whatever thing all modern laptops have since I have no other choice.
  • Keyboard backlight almost always off
  • I run BeamNGdrive on lowest settings to avoid putting excessive load on the internals since Beam is a very demanding sim. Similarly, I render using Eevee in Blender whenever I use Blender (which is pretty rare). Even tho I can render using cycles, but I think cycles would put too much load on the internals.
  • I always open/close the laptop from the middle slowly. Especially since the hinges are terrible on all HPs right?
  • I use the keyboard cover/cloth it came with whenever closing to protect the screen from getting permanent impressions from the keys. The cover is never on during operation because I know I'd be trapping heat that way.
  • I use gloves at all times to prevent transfer of oils from my skin. Gloves are more rad than bare hands anyways.
  • I store the laptop inside a laptop sleeve. However it's not a very big 17 inch sleeve or something and is made for the exact size of my laptop (15.6 inches) so there's not much extra space if that matters.
  • I don't have one now but I'll try to get an external keyboard later in future to protect the keyboard from excessive use.
  • I handle the laptop when moving around with both hands carefully to avoid putting excessive pressure on one specific region.
  • There's an old game I play once in a blue moon that was for Windows and I really like it so I unfortunately can't switch to Linux. I know I can just use a VM but idk man... Compatibility still stresses me out. Why not just use a Linux VM when I need to? Anyways, while I can't do much, I debloated Win11 with CTT and revo uninstaller and some animations had been disabled. So it shouldn't be too bad I think. I haven't done any customization to avoid bloat and ensure maximum stability.  Fast startup is mainly for HDDs and doesn't affect SSDs much so I've disabled that as well to ensure cleaner bootups.

I got really lucky with my old laptop (a Dell Inspiron 14) which I was very reckless with but it still lasted 12 whole years! I thought this was the norm for laptops. But now I see people having their laptops die in  like 5 years and that's so pathetic my 7 year old Samsung (mind you, not a flagship, just a basic one) PHONE is running fine. A laptop should literally, scientifically, last longer (just like how desktops last longer than laptops. Size does matter). Anyways, I'm super scared right now. I'm not expecting a decade+ but is it possible for it to last 7-8 years at least? Ik yall must be wondering if I'm so worried about longevity why didn't I buy a ThinkPad. Trust me I wanted to, but any proper real ThinkPad was way out of my parents' budget. And an E series is a waste of money according to most people and what's even the difference b/w that and mine at that point. I wanted refurb T480 but my parents weren't ready to buy refurb and it had to be new hence why I got this Victus.

Please, everyone... give me a realistic estimate. I'd been stressed af since yesterday after reading people's ASUS TUFs lasting 4-5 yrs which is so pathetic. And ASUS is better than HP right? Idk if this is true but I think TUF is also MIL-STD-810H. But the Victus isn't. So if the TUF is dying, will my Victus die too? How many years I got?

  • Hey man, I think you’re a bit overthinking about using stuff. However, I do admire your dedication to protecting and caring for your laptop. To be honest, I’ve never seen anyone use gloves while using a laptop. Anyway, your laptop should be fine for over five years with all the care you’re taking of it.

This is an insane amount of hassle for using a laptop that had entry level specs 5 years ago... nowadays even iGPUs get close to it or even beat it.

    Are 3050 that bad ?

No man, he's talking bout intel arc igpus or smth, uhd graphics aint shit compared to 3050

Yeah that's kinda crazy just clean the finger prints off every now and then

  • First of all wow that amount of care is insane and yeah if you actually do all you said you would its lasting 6 years minimum

With all this maintenance it better lasts a decade or he riots.

  • Victus is their low-end model so maybe 4-ish years with good care?

  • I do all of that too, except the gloves, thats crazy lol

  • Holy shit, dude. Calm down. There is no need to be that careful. It's not gonna break just from you looking at it.

    Take it easy.

  • That sounds a little excessive tbh...

To dive into your questions. I doubt anyone can tell you definitively how long it will last, since every device, no matter the manufacturer, can break. However, a Victus can last a long time if you aren't being stupid with it. I own a Victus 16. So far, it lasted me over a year and a half with no issues to speak of. Use is a little irregular and depends on if I want to game in the evening or rather read a book, so it's not every day. It is more than once a week, though. Battery life is still over 80%. It likely won't last a decade gaming, but that is more because the GPU is very low-end, not because of the build quality. It will become insufficient before the laptop dies.

As for cleaning, you don't have to clean the exterior that often. I wipe it down every few weeks or when I actually got something on it, and that is enough. No need for gloves, either. As for the interior, I roughly stick to a 3-4 month schedule. Didn't repaste yet, I will do that when I notice increased heat/noise, which didn't happen yet.

Always open the screen grabbing the lid in the middle where the camera is and hold the rest of the laptop down. Same for closing. My hinges feel like they did on the first day.

No need for an external keyboard, the internal one is fine tbh. Don't hammer on it like a gorilla and I don't see why it shouldn't last. I have an external rubber dome one on my main, desktop PC that is 10 years old now. Still works. It has some scratches from my finger nails, but the plastic is a lot worse than that of my Victus, which shows no traces of year at all.

As for the sleeve, if you want to travel, get a sturdier case with padding and strengthened corners. They usually come with extra compartments for cables etc. Personally, I just let my laptop sit on a flat surface without the case. That is all the protection it needs unless you carry it around.

Yes, the TUF has MIL-STD-810H, but the standard is pretty useless. I had way more issues with my old TUF than I do with my Victus. You can ignore that. And stop worrying so much.

Thanks for the detailed response. I really should but it's hard to.

The thing is that I'm not very rich so I really can't be buying new laptops too often. I'll eventually get one in future with my own money but that's a long way to go.

    That's why I'm kinda paranoid

Does victus support undervolting and should I do it

From what I remember, the CPU itself might not support it. I have a 7640HS, and it cannot be undervolted, not because of Victus but because of AMD. They just won't let you on anything but an HX series chip.

As for the GPU, that should be much easier with MSI Afterburner. I do that with my 4060, and there are few issues with it. Just two games that don't like the undervolt. It might help get a bit more performance out of the GPU, a 3050 isn't the greatest card and I think the 50W is a bit low for it, too. So, I would definitely try that at least.

Oh I see. But I wanted to undervolt the cpu not gpu as the gpu is already undervolted from factory if you think about it right? Just 50W XD

That's not undervolting, that's limiting wattage. Two different things. Actual undervolting can provide more performance at the same power draw if done right.

    Ahh I see. Mb. Thanks

  • depends on the way you carry and treat your laptop. If you always transport it on a good case and never spill liquids on it, it should last you many years. You also need to search its fatal flaws and be cautious about them. If hinjes are one of its flaws, never open your laptop in a forceful manner.

  • I would not close my laptop every time. Hinge are prone to break especially with cheap one

  • Don't worry about it. Your laptop has all the chances to last you 7 years and even more. You just need to take care of it. I've seen a few of the laptops of the people who say the laptop didn't last. Most of them are scratched, full of dust, bent weirdly, cracked and it makes me wonder: how did those products last that long? I've seen someone bring the laptop in construction. It was full of a construction site dust. There a few cases where the laptop simply dies out of nothing - but these are rare and I'm pretty sure you're gonna be fine. Your Victus is going to last you, you will only have to change it because the GPU will be outdated. BTW, my 9 year old, Asus ROG 552VX is still standing. I clean it of dust regularly, I don't use gloves, I've gamed on it a lot and never got any problems. I have a friend who own an HP (not sure exactly which model) since 6 years ago, he plays games sometimes, laptop is fine. There are a lot of people with old laptops and also with newer ones who have no issues. You will rarely find them here, because they don't have a reason to be. Most of the users have no issues with any brand.

NINE YEARS ON A GAMING LAPTOP?! WOW! That is seriously impressive. Genuinely very impressive.

Thank you so much, I hope it does last. I was going crazy after reading the comments here. I'll try my best.

That’s really not that impressive, that is pretty much my average with all of my computers - I typically keep them for around 10 years. I picked up HP Victus last Labour Day sale on clearance from Best Buy (literally the last one in stock) for $600. AMD Ryzen 7 7445HS with 16 GB Ram 512 GB SSD Radeon 740M/Nvidia GeForce GTX 4050 running Windows 11 Pro. For $600 brand new, I am not complaining at all. This laptop is replacing my ASUS Tuffbook FX505 Intel i5 9300H Nvidia GeForce 1650 with 8GB RAM DDR4 512 GB SSD that I picked up in 2019 which puts right at 7 years old now. It ran Windows 10 Pro like a dream, but under Windows 11 + all of the updates the operating system just started to lag/delay too much for my liking.

As far as gaming goes, The ASUS will still play nearly every game in my Steam/Good Old Games library (I pretty much only play older AAA games that I can pick for $5-15 that are GOTY with all of the DLC and with most of the bugs patched and fixed.

Because my gaming standards are relatively low, and I don’t fall into the fomo and the hype of day one release games at $80+, I really don’t need to spend a $1000 or more on a computer. For my need wants and daily usage, This new to me HP Victus is perfect. The older ASUS Tuffbook is now my dedicated Linux box running Debian 13 Trixie which runs incredibly fast and stable and I will probably keep on using it until it dies on me. When I am in the market for a new PC, I usually wait for the Black Friday/Labor Day sales and find something that is on closeout/ clearance with decent specs.

IMHO, your cleaning schedule seems a bit OCD. I have never cracked open of my laptops to apply thermal grease os anything tike that, I have never done any extensive cleaning on the fans, I have never used a cooling pad. Most I ever do is clean the screen and wipe down the keyboard and chassis. My laptop pretty much just lives on the desk closed hooked up to an external monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers.

I leave the HP Victus plugged in except once a week I will unplug it nd run the battery down to 30% and then plug it back in. You want to discharge the battery in order to help maintain the battery health. I shut down the laptop at night and unplug it - doesn’t need to be plugged in and charging at night. I keep the laptop in ECO mode for general use and switch to performance for game and stuff.

  • I see no reason why several years of usage shouldn't be possible with the care you take with your laptop.

  • Watch the hinges and clean dust out regularly. Should last a while.

    Thanks, I will

  • Hey. As you can see from my flair I own a Victus laptop and have been since mid 2022. It's still going strong.

My only recommendation would be to make sure that you don't let the gpu overheat and you should be fine, so don't let the fans get clogged and use it in a ventilated environment (not directly on your bed). It's a good laptop that I'm satisfied with.

I do also open and close it from the middle slowly because you never know lol, but no damage for now

    Thanks. Will try my best

  • bro lmao literal same laptop here

  • My tuf is doing fine, 3 years never changed paste. Planning to add an egpu in the future

  • For your reference I bought a hp omen 15 r7 4800h rtx2060 on 2020 Black Friday. I didn’t really take good care of it and it’s still running fine and it’s still my main computer. It had a glitch of some sort a few years ago and I needed to reset the computer but other than that it’s been running fine. Mind you I abuse the thing and have never cleaned the fan or anything.

I might be upgrading when 60 series come out or when there is a good deal on 50 series laptop, but that’s more to do with the 2060 not satisfying my needs rather than something went wrong with the computer.

That's really nice but then again Omen is a high end gaming laptop so maybe it's not that surprising it's reliable... meanwhile I have a low end Victus hence why I'm concerned AF

  • Specs wouldn’t be a bottle neck for your usage but the hinges would give out before the components

  • Brother take off the gloves the way your using it minimum 7 to 8 years without a problem your just overthinking thats all

  • I bought an hp omen 15 in 2019 and it still works fine. You have 5 years at minimum.

  • My hp pavilion 15 ec0xxx gtx1650 is still alive and kicking with minimal issues except for that darn annoying keyboard that doesnt get fixed even after being repaired and replaced by the technician. In the end went and killed thr keyboard my self (its exaggeration i just messed with the control panel and disabled it). Anyways its still great

  • Dang I have a 5090 laptop and pc and don’t treat them anywhere near this good. Big fucking props to you bro, it’s amazing seeing people actually take care of their stuff and being happy with what they have. I need to learn how to be that way

  • Man u are overthinking too much

  • Cheap laptops usually dont last more than 5 years, because of hardware and new requirements

  • The Laptop might last, but the 3050 is already dated.

Make sure you open the lid from the center instead of from the side, if you don't the hinges might last about a year if you are lucky.

Yes as mentioned in post already, I open the lid from the center always.

Ik 3050 is dated. Even 4050. Everyone seems to have moved on to the 50 series but this is the best I could get in my budget in my weird geographic location. But BeamNG is smooth so I'm happy and fine with having a shitty GPU. The CPU is okayish at least

If that's your budget it's what you get and if you are happy with it that's all that matters in the long run.

It will have trouble playing some newer games because the low vram, but should be fine on older games..

  • That amount of care is impressive. I have a laptop (from Acer though), it is going to be 9 years soon The only thing I do is regular cleaning of the laptop surface. Still running great. Extended only Ram and replaced ssd. If you use and take care of it the way you described, I am sure it should last long

  • I'm running a i7 1280p with a gtx 1650 and 16gb of soldered ram. Windows 11 is obese, you can't do much about it, although your laptop should have more raw power than mine. However if you need more performance after some years without spending money and software isn't a issue there is Linux.

It is not just "uSe LiNUx bRuH", I'm running a dual boot configuration with arch and it's kinda peak. There are plenty of distros and if you spend time learning one of them you'll manage to save a lot of money in the future since these are not cheap machines in general.

In this period where everything is expensive I think it will be a good alternative if you need a laptop with good performance in the future.

    Oh yeah for sure. Thanks.

But that wasn't my main concern. I need the actual hardware itself to be alive in order to use linux remember? 😅

As long as you don't slam it somewhere like John Cena you're fine.

Source: I destroyed a lot of devices when I was little

  • I would just use the laptop. As long as you don't break it, most laptops ive seen die due to a part failing, not user error.

Since you're caring for it, expect 5 years or so. That's about the run of most gaming laptops. However, part failures are random things and it could last up to 10.

If you're very concerned about part failure, look into extended warranties. Most catastrophic failures show themselves early on.

Motherboard failure is the most catastrophic right? I think most other components aren't as expensive. So as long as the laptop can be repaired I'm happy

Mb failure is pretty much the most catastrophic failure possible on a computer, yes. But a warranty should cover any failure, and its not unheard of for the GPU, CPU, screen, keyboard, etc to fail in the first few months. I got a lenovo loq recently thats keyboard failed first year, and warranty really saved me.

  • The main reason they "die" to my knowledge is because of the hinges and people not willing to repair those. That said to simply fix and redo hinges would cost less than $100? and honestly the core components should last 8 years+. it's just the cheap plastic hinges that hold the scren in place which is not even needed if you fine with using a external monitor or TV.

  • honestly your habit is a bit extreme. don't be too paranoid. my Acer Nitro 5 that's about to turn 8 years old is still fine without all that extra care and im still using it

    EIGHT? WOW!! That's insanely cool

  • Be very careful while handling thermal paste, mistakes are common and could cost your laptops. Your other measure are over the top imo but it can last your laptop for more than 5 years.

I won't be changing the paste myself. I don't trust myself enough for that. A technician would

  • I never cleaned the dust out of my laptop and absolutely never repasted it and never will and it's 12 years old. Other shit has broken, but the computer part itself and the screen still work. Hinge broken, bass of the speakers is broken, keyboard glitches.

    Wait what wow

    What model is it

Maybe it's so reliable because it's old. They don't make 'em like they used to anymore and since my laptop is new I'm not very confident in it

    Lenovo Y510P.

It runs super slow right now because of throttling and only 8 GB RAM and 4 GB storage left on my SSD, so the page file slows it down to a crawl. I'm gonna clean it out in a few minutes and move some files to my external hard drive. I can share a comparison of temperatures later.

    Thanks

I'm not surprised since it's a lenovo. Lenovos are the best

  • Dude what the hell! You just made me purchase a laptop stand, black latex gloves and a new Alienware keyboard. I'm not even joking. I think I found my spirit animal. Thank you for the inspiration!

    Lmao WHAT? No way

That's so cool! You made a great set of choices (tho I think latex can become a little uncomfortable over long periods of time and cotton might be more comfortable)

The stand especially will do wonders and legitimately increase lifespan. That I'm sure about

Honestly it reminds of Elliot from Mr. Robot (not sure if you've seen the show) where he hacks into a data centre and wears these black latex gloves when doing it.

Only image I could find of him wearing them lmao

But you definitely made me think of that when you mentioned the gloves (even if I were thinking of the wrong material to what you're using). But never thought about gloves to begin with! What a great way to avoid transfer of skin oils. I love it.

I have been pondering on whether to get a laptop stand and an external keyboard for the last week. Recently just got an Alienware gaming laptop with an external Alienware monitor and wireless Alienware mouse. I'm like you and have been so OCD about everything. Hate any skin oil transfers. Constantly shining my flashlight and removing any specs of dust as soon as I see them.

But your level of cleanliness convinced me to get the stand and the external keyboard. At least that way I'm not hovering over the laptop itself anymore, and not touching it directly, and avoids any accidents like spillage from drinks or anything! So essentially making sure it's far away from human contact! (lol).

Love it bro. I think you're awesome.

  • Mine will turn 4 years old in April, no issues whatsoever and still keeping up. Just had to do some repaste, and that's it

Although damn, reading further into your post, not sure if it will keep up to the 7-8 years you. But with the care you mention it will certainly do

  • Lol this has to be a troll post. The most unfortunate part is the RTX 3050. 1660ti, 1070, 1080, 2060, 2070 > 3050

    It's not. I'm dead serious

And I know the 3050 is bad but this was my only option

  • Drop the skeptical apperhensive mindset and let HP surprise you. I have HP notebook 15 with i3-4005u 4gb RAM 1gb GeForce 820m. Been working since 2014 (changed battery once 4 years ago and its still giving 3.5hrs on video playback). It's still working fine and I bet it can still run AC black Flag and far Cry 3 as I played em in 2015. You'd be really surprised by HP value.

GeForce 820m? Ah that brings memories. My old inspiron had the same gpu.

That's cool it really is but you know that they don't make em like they used to right? :(

I have no doubt old laptops last that long regardless of brand but kinda concerned about Mine since it's new and brands are greedier now right and planned obsolescence is a thing now

Trust me I know the feeling, I bought my Legion 5 with 3050 4gb about 3 years ago and I care for it like a baby, I do more than half the things you listed. It looks like obsessive caring disorder if that was a thing lol.

Regarding the manufacturers vision I think they tend to profit more than to prove themselves, because at this point every brand has it's share of the market and all are established, unlike the times when they were fighting for the spot and giving their best. So it is true for all laptops in the world right now, nothing is built to last normally or else how would they profit.

Anyways you have at least 5 years and if at some point you felt like needing more power or better GPU you can resell for 70% of it's price and top it so that you getbto replace it with better and newer one.

  • most gaming laptops die, its not a exclusive problem to hp.

they cook themselves or push their circuitry to the limit

But I'd read heat is the #1 killer of gaming laptops and all laptops alike in general. If we minimize that why would they still die so soon

cause after heat its the stress to the components during things like gaming

vrms are pushed to the limits

what if we undervolt? And run games at lowest settings?

So do you think the best thing to do is buying extended warranty?

  • no need to worry so much. I bought Victus 15 in April 2024, 3050 6gb i5 13420h. I use it mainly for gaming, it usually stands on the table, I extremely rarely move it anywhere. For almost 2 years of use, all the damage is the erased inscription "VICTUS" on the left under the keyboard. It is also constantly connected to charging, but the battery does not degrade from this so quickly, so it can still hold a charge for quite a long time. I also have the maximum cooling mode enabled in Gaming Hub and about once every 2-3 weeks I clean the fan grille on the case. I always have the keyboard backlight on. Since the purchase, I have opened it twice: when I changed the SSD to another one for 2 TB and when I changed the RAM to 2 sticks of 16 GB, while never changing the thermal paste. BeamNG runs on my slightly weaker processor at almost maximum graphics, but in BeamNG MP I set almost minimum to get enough fps. In general, I play a lot of things, but they are not always new games. Almost everywhere I get maximum graphics somewhere around 60+ fps. My laptop is constantly open because it is on a stand in front of the steering wheel that I use for some driving simulators, so closing it is not very convenient.

honestly, as I continued reading this, I became very interested in knowing why you treat things this way. I don't mind, but this is a laptop from their cheap line of plastic and with far from the best components. In April 2024, I bought it with money from a bonus at work that I received back in January of that year. I won't be too sorry if something breaks, since it's just a work machine that will soon become just a second monitor for my new computer. Don't worry so much about things, it will make your life easier

That's really cool. The reason I'm treating it like this is cuz I just felt bad the way I used to treat my old laptop and I want to be a different person this time. Especially since this Is a new laptop and new things don't last too long.

Also because... well... you might be shocked by this but even tho this is their cheapest gaming line it's expensive for me and I can't just replace it easily when it dies

  • Nobody can tell you how long it will last.

  • Hey man i got a question for you. This model is one that i've been considering and i haven't decided yet but am about to get make a choice in 2-3 days,Can you tell how has it been for you ? And also how much did you get it for ? Thanks

I like it but that's just because my old laptop was genuinely very bad and the jump from that to this was comically big. I love it a lot, but I can't say the same for everyone most people may not like it much as it only has an RTX 3050, that too, only limited to 50W. So you'll struggle with some demanding games at max settings

If you can, get the LOQ instead of this. I live in a weird place where everything is very expensive for some reason and the LOQ was Hella overpriced that's why I got this.

However, I'd say the CPU is pretty good. R5 8645HS has good benchmarks. Better than most of its competitors at this price range.

I got it for $688. I know, insane. But that's just the way things are in my place

Believe it or not,my case is the same man, going for the first time from an intel uhd level to rtx 3050,hence my concern for picking a near perfect choice,And yeah after some consideration i've decided on the LOQ,its a shitty processor (R5 7235hs) but has the 95w tgp 3050 and 24gigs of ram and in direct currency change,it is costing me about 650usd.Also i shared the same concern you did,the hp build quality and the infamous hinges,so everything biased to the LOQ,let's hope it goes well, and hope your piece survives long, peace ✌🏻

  • 3-4 depending on how well you take care of t

  • Okay, I actually own a Victus 15 and for about 2 to almost 3 years now. Just clean the fans when they get dusty and maybe when the time comes, maybe a thermal paste change.

But also, elevate the laptop for better airflow and stay away from using it on beds and other uneven surfaces they may suffocate it.

Keep it clean, otherwise you should be good. Don't overthink it, man.

    Thanks.

The laptop is always 13.5 cm above the surface. It's elevated that way.

    Is it enough

It should be more than enough for good airflow.

  • it's an hp, it won't die but the first thing to give will be the casing, the build quality is cheeks, just look through my post history you'll see it, I changed my screen and everything's good so far at the very least

    Got it

So HPs are reliable but it's just the BQ that's bad?

  • Sounds like OCD. Get help.

  • That GPU sucks and insanely low power limit. Build quality aside, you'll need to upgrade in the next year or two anyways

I know it's garbage. But that's fine. As long as it's Alive it's fine.

I lasted 12 years with a dual core 4th gen i3 before. I can easily last a few years with an okay R5 and a crappy RTX. That is, if it lasts

  • why using AI 🤣

    I'm literally not, tho?

I typed it out myself. If it was AI it would've sounded more formal

You would know if it is AI if it has those Outlines with emojis or something

  • All that care for a bottom of the barrel laptop is crazy,if it breaks just toss it snd buy a new one

That’s so disrespectful. Not everyone has that amount of money

    I'm not rich
