Though I will admit the only dress I personally own, that Packman skater dress that "broke the internet", does not have pockets... But it also doesn't conceal my nuts very well, and I am but a man who lives with three women... And the nuts thing seems pretty specific to me around this place.
Anyway, my comment about four up the chain was actually intended as an off colour joke about finding things in dresses that look like what the pocket vaguely resembles and this whole post alludes to. Because you find those in more dresses than half all dresses would be my estimate.
A zipper would be ugly, and hard to use with how little structure it would have to pull against. There are definitely ways to design open pockets that look and function better than this.
