Hey dude, since you're the Official DRM Checker, do you know if there's any page with the DRM status of all/most games in the EGS? In particular, do you know if Nioh 2 is DRM free?
I got sooooo many great shows on itunes winter deal of the day. Monk, Psych, Buffy, Angel, House, first ten seasons of South Park, each for $15 or less. Great season

SKALD:Against the Black Priory is a retro-style party-based RPG set in a grim-dark fantasy world of tragic heroes, violent deaths and Lovecraftian horror. I've been using https://www.reddit.com/r/FreeGameFindings/new.rss on RSSOwlnix and ever since I moved from QuiteRSS, I've noticed that new entries sometimes get delayed to the point where I would receive them when I only have a couple hours left to claim the goodies.
Any guesses as to why this happens? Updating the feed manually doesn't make a difference.
Edit: This time I received the entry an hour after I posted this.
I'm checking reviews for all the titles that I wasn't aware of and they're all on top, this one over 90% on Steam. The ones I already knew about, such as Dead Cells and Monument Valley, are also great. So maybe it's you.
I believe he meant that we (not me personally =C) are having nowadays 24+ threads CPU's + 64GB RAM + 24GB VRAM to play those overwhelmingly positive rated games that look like 8-bit games from 90's
Yeah unfortunately the development hell of Ultima IX & EA buying Origin spelled the end for the Ultima series. A shame too since it was one of the top RPG series back in the day & one of my favorites, I love those games.
They probably could have gone with the bundled generic graphics level from a game engine library, and put out a much better appearing game. There are people criticizing the game, because the graphics are too blocky it actually affects the gameplay! On a 4K monitor and RTX3060 graphics card, I do not want to see a game like this on my screen.
Nah. I wish EPIC didn't reward the company for putting out such sub-amateurish graphics.
And what of it? The point is that even a potato level PC from over a decade ago has a magnitude better graphics than grainy 8-bit pixels squares. I'm not seeing how it would have been more expensive to have implemented this game with a Civ III level pixel mapping.
The supreme irony is that this game could not even run on hardware using 8-bit graphics. Presume a 16-bit EGA graphics card functioning on a PCI bus; it would be a prehistoric hardware platform that could not even run windows 10 (maybe windows 7).
Its not even a nostalgia play. This roguelike game didn't exist at the era. People today would be playing an Ultima III level graphics clone that's not an actual game experience from the 1990's. The developers could have put out a prettier, more visually functional game without going to 8-bit block maps (Dink Smallwood level era?). Epic issuing this freebie is essentially rewarding the developers for a putrid archaic graphic interface, and that's what irritates me.

I now have over a 100 games in my library that Epic gave away AND my game pass ultimate that I stack for just over $100 3 years ago is about to expire (with it being now $30 a month!) I am so grateful to Epic, where else can I express that, honestly we live in great time as gamers.
Yes for the first part. Apparently yes for the second as well.
Anyway, it's hardcore, old-school, low-resolution, turn-based RPG very inspired by the Ultima RPG games. It's... quite niche. But apparently it's pretty well-liked inside the niche.
As a person who grew up playing the Ultima games, I absolutely loved SKALD and think it’s quite an enjoyable experience. So yeah, I fall into the camp you described :-)
I wanted to try out the game, but I ran into a huge bug right at the start. When I set any of the CRT shaders, the game doesn't switch to 4:3 mode, so on a 4:3 monitor, the two edges of the game stick out of the picture (because the aspect ratio remains 16:9).
This is pretty bad. Especially for those who play on CRT monitors or 4:3 5:4 monitors.
A retro game with retro shaders that doesn't support 4:3 resolution?
Hey while I'm personally really excited about this game, I get that this game might not be everyone's cup of tea. But this was posted literally 1 minute after this freebie post was made. Like at least actually look at the game before you decide you don't like it.
Which ones are not good? I was trying to compile a list of good and bad ones to see if I agree with him, and from here it looks like almost all of them are great games
All are games with good reviews that are popular and not cheap filler items, and only one of these was a repeat. If so many people like those games, don't you think there's a chance that they might actually be good games or that you might actually enjoy them if you gave them a shot? The added bonus is you can try them without having to pay for them.
Not everyone has to like every game, but why not actually give it a shot or at least watch a YouTube gameplay video or something?
If you search on Google, it's mainly queer forums talking about it. I will take a step back and disregard this, and go with the narrative of it being a game bought by every type of gamer. My comment was a response to the game being considered in high regard, but that is easily debunked by real statistics (which I supplied).
The fact remains that the game was bought by a minuscule number of people, with an even smaller fraction of them caring to rate it. The majority of gamers did not buy it. The game was so irrelevant that it's only being talked about because:
EGS gave it for free.
The scandal of it being nominated Debut Game of the year due to possible corruption (apparently, the whole awards have close ties to the company that made this game)
If you are still not convinced, check out this game I randomly pulled from a list of indie games published at the same time period: https://steamdb.info/app/1885110/charts/
Check ANY other game (that is not asset flip / AI slop) published in the same time period.
Funny that you guys can't disprove my arguments, so you fight data with ad hominem and downvotes. I challenge you to disprove my arguments methodically.
I listed games Epic featured as free giveaways this December, that I know are good games from personal experience, positive reviews, and popularity.
The 2 exceptions I noted are Paradise Killer & Sorry We're Closed. I said I don't know much about these but noted they were listed as highly rated. OK so you take exception with the numbers on Sorry We're Closed & compare it to Balatro, one of the top games of last year. I personally think it would be ridiculous to compare every RPG to Expedition 33 & say LOOK IT DOESN'T HAVE THE NUMBERS OF EXPEDITION 33 IT'S A MEDIOCRE GAME but for sake of argument Fine let's say it's mediocre.
I couldn't see your full comment since it was removed, and these are not 10/10 games but they are great: Eternights, Bloodstained, Cassette Beasts. I know because I BOUGHT THE FIRST TWO. Callisto Protocol is in the top 100 PS4 titles on PSNdeals thats the only reason I know about it. Is Bloodstained as good as Castlevania Symphony of the Night? Fuck no. Is it worth playing to fans of Metroidvania genre. Yes.
My point is that Epic is giving us great games this December. I get their free game every week regardless of quality, and sometimes there are stretches where the quality leaves much to be desired. This month is not one of those times.
It’s a turn based pixel RPG where you build a party of players - with their own backstory and persona. The game is heavily inspired by the old Ultima games. The writing is, IMHO, fantastic, and the game play and combat are well done. It has a lot of hours of gameplay and is really enjoyable, but I can see how this won’t be everyone’s cup of tea if you expect AAA quality graphics. People who are into this genre of game really love it, and those who are on the fence enjoyed the first half, but felt the second half was a bit weaker (I liked all of it).
There are six story-based party members you can pickup along the way, each of which has their own dialogue and can get a unique ending. You can alternatively pickup mercenaries to add to your party if you’re not interested in certain party members.
The answer is yes, actually to me those games look better than realistic AAA graphics, and this coming from someone who does 3D realistic architectural graphics for a living.
Most of the games given away this year unfortunately seems to be the “bait people into investing in the dlc/add on section to get the complete game” that is already overpriced variants in most cases compared to alternative shops/online stores.
No one in their right mind invests in dlc on the epic store because most barely use it including me. i only play the complete versions they give, since the games are usually pretty old anyway when given away or i play the ones that dont have any dlc hassle that i dont own on steam or other drms
I’m sure you’re referring to other games, but SKALD has two DLC that don’t make any difference to the core game. One is the soundtrack, and the other is a reinforcement pack that just gives you some in game items. No need to invest in either to enjoy the game.
Yes, there’s a lot of people who purchased this game and loved it (myself being one of them). It’s an homage to old school RPGs like Ultima, but with many modern quality of life investments. It’s a fun game for people who enjoy this genre of game, but may not be your thing.
Don't get me wrong, I'm playing Disco Elysium right now, but I particularly dislike inventory management mechanics, which is why I could not even get into Darkwood.
Honestly it’s not a crazy amount of management you have to do. Pick and choose the armor and weapons for each party member that suits the skills you invest in. Sell the rest. It’s akin to almost all party-based RPGs. But if that’s still not your cup of tea, no worries.
People keep asking for AAA. We got that this year with that Harry Potter game. IMHO, AA and indies for the Christmas stretch would have yielded a better selection if the budget is constant.
SKALD Against the Black Priory is DRM-free! Just launch it directly from the .exe :)
I gotta wait longer for the duplicate threads to be killed I swear.
Hey dude, since you're the Official DRM Checker, do you know if there's any page with the DRM status of all/most games in the EGS? In particular, do you know if Nioh 2 is DRM free?
Here. This autopopulates, so when a game is listed as DRM-Free, it'll show up here a few minutes later.
Nioh 2 is listed as "unknown" for DRM status. I don't have the game, so I can't check it.
Another one that was in my Steam cart
It really worth it to wait until all the giveaways
I love the holidays
I got sooooo many great shows on itunes winter deal of the day. Monk, Psych, Buffy, Angel, House, first ten seasons of South Park, each for $15 or less. Great season

I still can't believe I got Hogwards Legacy,Disco Elysium and Monument Valley in less than one month

Got like 3 notifications on my RSS feed all with the same timestamp. Damn, you guys are fast.
This is a competition of honor.

You were the second one. u/MeguminShiro came in third.
Yeah, I had a nice laugh when I refreshed the page and saw the posts.
It has become a fun little game :)
Really hard to tell how to improvise those miliseconds if Reddit can't show them XDD
Guess need to click faster than before.
I can say with confidence that my post was published in 271 ms, the second post in about 300-350 ms, and yours is always the longest at 600-900 ms.
I came here just to test my skills.
Ping advantage in action
It's also worth considering that Reddit itself can publish a post with a delay of 200-800 ms; I tested all of this in 2-3 days.

A good game with mediocre graphics will always be better that a mediocre game with good graphics.
Nice this looks like an old school Ultima game. Not modern at all but this one looks up my alley
Skald is a very good game. Bought it on Steam. No regrets
I wish it was one of the Ultima games, lmao. I even got UO open right now.
Yeah unfortunately the development hell of Ultima IX & EA buying Origin spelled the end for the Ultima series. A shame too since it was one of the top RPG series back in the day & one of my favorites, I love those games.
Just another victim of EA
Fear not, EA will be dead soon what with the leveraged buyout from Trump's son in law and the Saudis.
There's no way they're paying back that debt.
So it doesn't play like an Ultima game?
But the game got released last year!
Nah. I wish EPIC didn't reward the company for putting out such sub-amateurish graphics.
this game is not meant for people like you. Also, we all know your "4k" monitor ain't running nowhere near 4k with that 3060 lol

Old school fantasy with turn based combat? Sign me in! Literally I grew up with this games in the early 90s.
This christmas season is literally Epic on Epic!
DRM Check in progress.Game is DRM-Free!* = Previously given away on EGS.
I now have over a 100 games in my library that Epic gave away AND my game pass ultimate that I stack for just over $100 3 years ago is about to expire (with it being now $30 a month!) I am so grateful to Epic, where else can I express that, honestly we live in great time as gamers.
Agreed, I been a fan of Epic since day 1
Is this another hidden gem that I say "what game is this" and get down voted to oblivion?
Yes for the first part. Apparently yes for the second as well.
Anyway, it's hardcore, old-school, low-resolution, turn-based RPG very inspired by the Ultima RPG games. It's... quite niche. But apparently it's pretty well-liked inside the niche.
As a person who grew up playing the Ultima games, I absolutely loved SKALD and think it’s quite an enjoyable experience. So yeah, I fall into the camp you described :-)
It has an unpeccable atmosphere and soundtrack. But it's pretty far from hardcore. It's simple both difficulty-wise and system-wise.
Seems interesting, gonna try it out.
i like how retro it looks, might play!
Old skool rpg. Love it.
Fuck yeah, I wanted to buy this game for a while!
I wanted to try out the game, but I ran into a huge bug right at the start. When I set any of the CRT shaders, the game doesn't switch to 4:3 mode, so on a 4:3 monitor, the two edges of the game stick out of the picture (because the aspect ratio remains 16:9).

A retro game with retro shaders that doesn't support 4:3 resolution?
It's a shame, it's a pretty big mistake.
expired
Changed, thanks for the mention.
Another one off the steam wishlist.
thank you
not familiar but looks kinda cool. like the style.
Thank you.
Ooh a wish list game. Nice I'm playing this one ASAP.
rip. im sad i missed out on this. looks interesting enough to download and play. maybe i will try steam
Another RPG, and one absent on consoles at that! This year's lineup is really cooking with gas.
Hey while I'm personally really excited about this game, I get that this game might not be everyone's cup of tea. But this was posted literally 1 minute after this freebie post was made. Like at least actually look at the game before you decide you don't like it.
basically every game so far
This month so far we've gotten Hogwarts Legacy, Disco Elysium, Callisto Protocol, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, and Eternights.
This sub is insufferable some times.
It's been an amazing giveaway. These games are FREE! A lot of miserable people out there that are never happy.
A lot of folks have made not liking things their entire personality even if it's obviously nonsense.
yeah i about to say, to say all games given away have been wack is being a hater. some of them have been heaters!
but some of them... have not been lol.
Which ones are not good? I was trying to compile a list of good and bad ones to see if I agree with him, and from here it looks like almost all of them are great games
(((((((imo))))))
Eternights,Paradise Killer,Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night,We Were Here Together,Cassette Beasts
heard less than great things about the callisto protocol too
Hey look man if you don't like them you don't like them, I'm not saying you have to like those games. But for the record:
Eternights: 83% positive reviews (3,207 total), 17 hours How Long To Beat, 5.58 Historical Low
Paradise Killer: 89% positive (4,285), 15h HLTB, 3.99 HL
Bloodstained: 92% positive (40,541), 35.6h HLTB, 4.79 HL
We Were Here Together: 81% positive (16,818), 9h HLTB, 3.91 HL
Cassette Beasts: 92% positive (10,154), 54h HLTB, 7.67 HL
All are games with good reviews that are popular and not cheap filler items, and only one of these was a repeat. If so many people like those games, don't you think there's a chance that they might actually be good games or that you might actually enjoy them if you gave them a shot? The added bonus is you can try them without having to pay for them.
Not everyone has to like every game, but why not actually give it a shot or at least watch a YouTube gameplay video or something?
This may the best month I've ever seen for free Epic games. These were all featured giveaways, good enough to warrant purchasing:
Cassette Beasts
Disco Elysium
Monument Valley I & II
Bloodstained Ritual of the Night
Eternights
Callisto Protocol
Hogwarts Legacy
Dead Cells
Jackbox Party 4
Darkside Detective - does not have mass appeal but I bought this game on multiple platforms
Paradise Killer & Sorry We're Closed - I don't know much about these but they are also highly rated games
[removed]
What an insane opinion to have
Opinion? I just stated facts, even if you forcefully close your eyes to not see them.
Balatro, 170k+ reviews: https://steamdb.info/app/2379780/charts/
Sorry We're Closed, 1k reviews only: https://steamdb.info/app/1796580/charts/
Both launched same year.
Balatro: 11.5k people playing right now after 2 years, all-time peak of 43k
Sorry We're Closed: 26 people playing right now, all-time peak of 254
Both are indies.
And how does that support your ridiculous assumption that only LGBT people bought the less-popular games?
If you search on Google, it's mainly queer forums talking about it. I will take a step back and disregard this, and go with the narrative of it being a game bought by every type of gamer. My comment was a response to the game being considered in high regard, but that is easily debunked by real statistics (which I supplied).
The fact remains that the game was bought by a minuscule number of people, with an even smaller fraction of them caring to rate it. The majority of gamers did not buy it. The game was so irrelevant that it's only being talked about because:

You will see the game is irrelevant.

these crybabies downvoting the truth...
There is no truth in opinions, genius
Something stated in an opinion could be accurate or not. But, of course, opinions should not be taken as objectively reliable on their own.
That wouldn't be considered an opinion then.
yup
Can you give me a feedback about the game?
It’s a turn based pixel RPG where you build a party of players - with their own backstory and persona. The game is heavily inspired by the old Ultima games. The writing is, IMHO, fantastic, and the game play and combat are well done. 10:59 I went to redeem it and didn't look at the time it said $14.99 and then I refreshed the screen and then it was free it said get.
Don't know what it's about but I added to my cart anyways because well it's free and I've been doing that since day one.
Epic Games sometimes lags, which is why free games actually become free after 1-2 minutes.
Are the characters in your party fixed or can you swap them?
There are six story-based party members you can pickup along the way, each of which has their own dialogue and can get a unique ending. You can alternatively pickup mercenaries to add to your party if you’re not interested in certain party members.
Bought it on steam and never played it. Gotta love these.
How's the esrb rating hold up since it's retro style?
Bro what are these games they’re giving away? Do people actually play these games?
Well they can't be giving away rdr2 for 12 days now can they?
It puts the lotion in the basket, or it gets the hose again!
Lmao
The answer is yes, actually to me those games look better than realistic AAA graphics, and this coming from someone who does 3D realistic architectural graphics for a living.

Is it any good? It looks horrific
Yes, there’s a lot of people who purchased this game and loved it (myself being one of them). It’s an homage to old school RPGs like Ultima, but with many modern quality of life investments. It’s a fun game for people who enjoy this genre of game, but may not be your thing.
all the games they've been giving out have been absolute dog shit ...horrible
Wow they went full cheap this year except disco Elysium everything else is a 9.99 indie nobody has ever played and a huge flop
Hate inventory management games, man
I hope the next giveaways will make you happier, as well as all other users.
Don't get me wrong, I'm playing Disco Elysium right now, but I particularly dislike inventory management mechanics, which is why I could not even get into Darkwood.

Last year it was better epic this year it sucks honestly 😅 I understand they are free but a decent game at least one 🙄
People keep asking for AAA. We got that this year with that Harry Potter game. IMHO, AA and indies for the Christmas stretch would have yielded a better selection if the budget is constant.
ok, I know EGS is reading this sub. here's a list of games that I'd want that are already at 90% discount.
Maneater.
This war of mine.
also, since you've already given us two viking games, may be AC Valhalla? it's at 90% discount too. I already own it but folks will be grateful.
Both of those games have been given out before. In the case of TWoM, its been given away on other platforms as well.
