To redeem your free The Last of the Druids Mystery Box all you need to do is to open the in-game shop either in Path of Exile 1 or Path of Exile 2! The Mystery Box will be automatically added to your account and you'll find it in your Microtransaction Stash. Please note that visiting the shop on the website does not trigger the free box - it must be accessed from inside the game client. Please note that while this Mystery Box is not yet available in Path of Exile 1, you will still receive it and will be able to open it once the box is released in Path of Exile 1.

That surprised me. I thought promotions like this were to encourage people to play but they just obviously just wanted to reward their fans.

Bit weird indeed, for what it's worth they do this promotion every year if my mind serves right, so if you at least do the account now you're set for next year.
If free MTX are your motivation to check out games they do a lot of free MTX as twitch drops each league, and the last 2 PoE2 leagues gave out more free MTX for beating the 1st act during its free weekend.
This most recent league which launched in early December had 8 free items total between the free weekend promotion and twitch drops.
Are those 2 separate boxes? Meaning if someone have PoE2, they need to download PoE1 to get both?
And if someone have just PoE1, will they be able to access the reward when PoE2 goes f2p?
All microtransaction are visible in both game, they share it.
The diff is that you can't use some of poe2 on poe (but you can see them).
I believe it doesn't matter which game you do it in (it gets attached to your account), you just can't open the box yet in PoE1. It's one box.

It will be free when it launches, right now you can only get access through purchase of a supporter pack. But the way it reads, it's one box per account and the rewards on PoE1 will be avail in PoE2 as well.

This post isn't for the game, but in-game item. You can get it for free on the first game and the item transfers over to the second game (like if you get it for free later).
MTXs are shared from 1 to 2. If you get it on 1 now it'll be available on 2. Just wait for 2 to become free; can't remember when. Personally, this is what I'm doing.

poe1 wasn't free during his beta until 1.0 release.
