Any good stylists or barbers that know how to work with men's curly hair? Looking to grow out the hair but don't know how to do the upkeep. Thanks!

  • When I moved here I checked Reddit for this same answer and found Franke of Fox with Locks. I've been using her all year and have been really satisfied.

  • Ben's studio. Best curly cuts!

  • You should go to The Hot Sauce Realm. There's a guy who works there who has the nicest curly hair I've ever seen on a man. And I say that as a straight man. Ask him where he goes. Guarantee hes got a good guy

  • Hi! I'm a woman but hopefully some of this info is still helpful :)

I've had many many different hairstyles and lengths over the years, as well as tried many types of products and curly styling methods.

    1. I would suggest trying to determine your curl pattern if you don't already know, you can Google charts online that show how the progression from wavy, to curly, to coily. This will help you to find specific hairstyles for your hair type and converse with your barber with more clarity.

    2. Styling methods and products can take some time to perfect and find. I'm sure any stylist will have great suggestions for your hair type and ideal style you're going for. I'll just note that the technique that has worked best for me is to spray/scoop/squeeze a small amount of products on my palm, add some water to thin it, and scrunch it into the hair rather than comb it through (unless you want to break up the strands on purpose). Then let it try in place and scrunch again to get rid of the "crunch"/soften the curls without breaking them up. And in most cases you do not want to brush out dry hair, unless you want an 80s glam look.

    3. I wish I had a suggestion for a specific stylist or salon, but unfortunately I've only been in the area for a little over a year and the stylist I had just gotten familiar with left. I also don't tend to get "curly cuts" in particular because most of them are shags and I do wear my hair straight on occasion so I like to get a more traditional cut that looks normal when blown out. Many salons do typically offer special services for curly hair though if you're looking for that.

If this was all stuff you already know, sorry for butting in. Maybe someone will find it helpful though! Good luck on your hair journey :)

  • Definitely Ben's Studio

  • Justin over at Madquez. Dude is a wizz with curly hair. Mine isn't as curly as it used to be (thanks getting old) but my kids hair is. He does a great job and both of the owners are great dudes.
