Haven’t exchanged money in a long time so I’m not sure there is a “best place” to do so here. We’re going to Mexico in a few weeks and would like to grab some cash before going. Any suggestions?

  • Hello! Congrats on your upcoming trip :) The best place to get cash in Mexico is any ATM away from the airport. Pop into an oxxo or any other ATM and pull out your money there. ATM fees will be wayyyyy lower than currency converters. If you want to get cash right now, AAA usually does it and I believe there one down college.

Yeah go to Mexico and an actual bank. Not the Mexico labeled atms. Ask me how I know. Plus most legit businesses will take cards

“Mexico labeled ATMs” what do you mean?

They were on the main drag of Cabo with the Mexico marketing on them. I didn't lose any money but got popped for fake charges on the 2x I used them. Me being lazy. The bank was a block away.

This is the plan once we’re there. Just want to have like $50 worth of pesos once us when we land for basic tips and stuff before we head out to town.

Where are you going? Touristy places are just as happy with us cash. It was a little disappointing to me when I found that out

Ehh I get that. I usually google ATMs near the area I’m staying and uber there from the airport.

Yeah, we like to bring 2,000 pesos left from last time. However, dollars are just as acceptable and preferred. If for tipping. If you buy things they will likely have their "own conversion rate" like 15 pesos per dollar. Then once you get to MX have your driver stop at a banco and use your ATM card to withdrawal. Otherwise there are probably tons of banks around your place.

  • FNBO did it for me. Not the worst rate but was nice to have some when I got there. Then just get more in MX. It generally takes 3 business days for them to receive it.

I've purchased USD with pesos and even mutilated euros there. They were very helpful.

  • Wells Fargo will do exchanges but you should call first to confirm which currencies. I think the Community Bank at Harmony and Boardwalk does also... might be Canadian only though. Call banks, they will know where to send you.

  • If your bank has a local branch you can do it there. You most likely have to order it in advance. This is what we did for euros.

  • Assuming you are flying. Money exchange at aeropuerto. Not cheap, but threat of fraud less likely.

  • AAA will order for you.

  • I used Chase on east harmony for some euros this summer. It took two days as they had to order them.

  • Whenever I go to Mexico I just take US dollars with me and exchange at or close to the airport.
