As the (ATL) Philippine republican movement rejected the heraldic symbols (for the most obvious reasons), they adopted symbols that symbolized not just themselves, but also a hypothetical federal republic of the archipelago: The white triangle with a sunrise (over the mountains) and three stars, which symbolizes equality and new hope, was added in the background by a fasces (courtesy of Blanchoyeur), a Roman republican symbol.
