France didn't actually change that much since, either.
A "comedian" (Ary Abittan, dude's as funny as my left shoe) very credibly accused of rape recently has been defended tooth and nail by the french government.

As a French person. Yes. It is absolutely part of the French culture to use art as an excuse to be a molester and pretend that filming naked teenagers is peak fine art. And don't you dare criticize otherwise people are gonna tell you that you're shallow and close minded. An example of that is Gabriel Matzneff a semi famous writer who got away with writing about his sexual adventures with kids and young girls and everyone was like "omg he's so avant garde, what a visionary artist". Until one of his former "girlfriends" who was 14 at the time, wrote a book about how traumatic all of this was.
I think it’s all very similar to Japan
Oof that book. I recommend it, it's a quick read, for anyone reading and curious. Finished it in a few hours.
Read another book at the same time called "My dark Vanessa", about the same topic. That one's a novel but my God was that a potent duo.
Both books, highly recommended.
Ah yeah same I finished it super quick but needed a few days to recover
The essay that helped me better understand France’s history of pedophilia and rape: https://aeon.co/essays/how-the-french-bohemian-elite-celebrated-predatory-behaviour. A very normalized pastime of bourgeoisie artists of the 60s and 70s, Simone de Beauvoir herself sourced young girls for John-Paul Sarte to prey on.
This is amazing. Thank you so much for sharing it.
this is just disgusting to read about. french rape culture sounds like a total nightmare if even the government is out here defending creeps like that comedian. makes me so mad thinking about how victims are just brushed aside like they don’t matter
French elite rape culture*. I'm french and I can tell you that most of the population are disgusted by the whole affairs. Depardieu used to be admired as a cult actor, now nobody wants to watch anything with him in it. Sadly the political and intellectual elites continue to defend rapists and abusers such as him, but rest assured that the french population is not okay with it
Mmmmmm are they, though? The men of France might publicly agree with how horrible it is, but the case of Gisele Pelicot begs to differ. I don't remember the exact percentage, but the percentage of men that lived in her vicinity (home town or county) that had raped her was staggering. That sure sounds like a society riddled with rape culture in all social brackets.
i'm so glad to hear that most french ppl are just as grossed out by this as i am. it makes me sick knowing the elites are still protecting creeps. how can they even look at themselves in the mirror without disgust when they're defending literal abusers?
Abittan is not defended by the government ? The president’s wife made a frankly insulting comment in a non official context, and she was rightly called out by a vast part of the public opinion.
I do agree that France has a real problem with men abusing their position tho. It’s linked to the « galanterie » which is just an excuse to belittle and put (sexual) pressure on women.
It's a huge problem worldwide. Look at the gender-based crime rates in Brazil. The country in the world that kills the most transgender people.
