Yeah but ropes are icky, and when the side explodes off and I smash the homeowners garage I can blame the freak weakness in the mortise I cut instead of my bad cut or inability to admit the tree should be chunked or rigged down.
A video of this shows up every few weeks. For the amateurs out there thinking it looks cool: don't do it! Misjudging your cuts even slightly, or being off just a bit, or dealing with a little bit or rot or other weirdness will lead to all kinds of unpredictable stuff. If you're pinned in a tight space and absolutely need the tree to fall a certain way, get friends and use ropes (actually, consider hiring a pro).
It's so easy to mess up this cut! It's so easy for the tree to go sideways because you didn't leave enough tree outside the tenon! It's so easy for the tenon to snap if you're doing it because you don't like the lean!
+1. Even if you do this cut exactly the way he does, depending on the tree you could still get a barber chair. And if it's dead, you may not be able to get it to remain standing long enough to cooperate with all those fancy cuts.
Not to mention it's generally a bad idea to try and emulate anybody who saws without PPE and chaps, and stands at the base of the tree just watching it as it falls.
Not to mention the tree he's working with probably goes about 2 ft above where the camera cuts off.. it's clearly not a full tree If you look at the physics when it falls.
In theory, an open face could twist or go sideways during the initial fall depending on the center of gravity. This keeps it from doing either until its committed to the drop. It has a pretty limited use since the center of gravity still needs to go generally where you want. This just ensures a 40' top doesn't drop 10 feet to the left on something expensive.
That's not really it at all - the actual use for this cut in forestry is to keep the tree locked to the stump when it lands. This is useful sometimes when felling on hills and theoretically useful in situations where you don't want the butt to jump and smash something (of course there are more reliable ways of achieving this).
The idea that it guides the fall better is basically a myth that has built up from social media because everyone has learned it from social media rather than old school cutters.
You know that looks cool, but I’ve never had a problem with getting a 12” diameter tree to fall where I wanted it.
I was about 14 when my dad who used to be a logger taught me how to “spin” a Maple about that size because he guessed I wouldn’t want to cut it up in the blackberry bushes it looked like it was wanting to crush😉
After using the chainsaw for weeks without ear protection…I learned the chainsaw isn’t even that loud…my eardrums have grown stronger and they no longer hurt…
The guy had a tiny stub. A big tree would not have been controlled this way. Hingewood is important. The only thing a technique like this does is prevent rolling of the stem after felling.
It's wild that this is even called advanced when it looks so sketchy. I'd rather take the extra time with a safer method than risk it for a viral clip.
I'm so tired of seeing this asshole posted to every felling page. He literally does this in every clip, every single one, with what is pretty much the same tree, same scenario every time. Its always the same species, rotten as hell, and doesnt need anything near this complicated or time consuming.
I am by no means an expert but i was so pumped using this tech on a birch tree, it was one of the biggest i had see and it was dying. It worked perfect and was just exillerating!!
One diagonal cut 1/4-1/3 of diameter, tense a rope from the cut side, slowly cut from the opposite side till tree start falling. Stop cutting and wait till it falls.
Don't you just cut a wedge out one side that goes a little past half the width of the tree then cut in the other side till it falls? And since it has less support on the wedge side it'll be more inclined to fall that way?
Safety shorts!
Comes with a free pair of safety squints
Oh fuck are those socks with sandals? Bold
Gotta keep the ticks off the ankles, ya know
Bro needs to save some ladies for the rest of us
What does he use for protection?
Whats that?
Why would he deny the world his precious DNA?
sawdust - also his lube of choice coincidentally.
And sap, of course.
His massive cock and balls
Testosterone.
Just raw-dogs it man
.357
I would except nothing less. The only thing missing is a cigarette hanging off the bottom lip that’s 60% ash
and a beer on the fencepost behind him
Safety sandals
Red with orange is never considered tone on tone, but I'm not telling him!
I can excuse safety violations, but to be so gauche, like come on man
That’s so fetch
Stop trying to make fetch happen!
Undoubtedly, Rootbeer Forklift Certified!
Those are Virginia Tech’s colors. And Velma from Scooby Doo.
Yeah but they’re grippy socks!
He can't see without his glasses!
How the hell does this guy have all his limbs attached
Jus gooder.
The gods keep him around for their amusement.
Survivorship bias.
He also doesn't have a single gray hair on his head... I think these things are related.
By not sucking at his job.
He’s wearing his protective pasty white legs
Pro tip: If you blind the chainsaw, it can't get you.
Was this filmed in the 1970’s? Shorts are a dead giveaway!!
It also looks like he's wearing sandals.
What a champion amoung men.
Lol, they're so short I'd be afraid of my balls hanging out and getting "kissed" by the bar.
With safety squints.
That’s safety short shorts to you there bud
"an \advanced* technique used by professionals"*
Does anyone know what this character's profession is?
Tennis pro?
Australian?
Tasmanian, more specifically
This video definitely got my Austradar going
Definitely not cutting trees.
Grape smuggler
Safety goggle manufacturer
Sharpening a chain? Matching his clothes?
He came dressed for the job. But he needed to take care of this tree first.
Meth.
Mainly just used by people that want internet points. There are so many other safer ways of controlling a tree.
When he cuts the first upper side the tree almost falls sideways. Lol.
And he almost took out the right side when cutting out the block. If that tree wanted to go right, it was going right.
Nahhhh, he left a tiny sliver of sapwood holding it, it'll be fine.
Look at the frequency it wobbles at and the angle when it lands. That trunk is about 10 feet tall
That’s what I’m thinking…..but he cut it with the authority of an experienced cutter. You have to give him that.
Every dumbass I’ve ever worked with in the woods has always been very confident while fucking shit up
And It's an 12 inch tree at best. Took longer to do whatever this monstrosity was than to just cut the thing down
Yea but when it comes to controlling a fells in tight spaces you gotta do it like this
There's virtually no control when you cut out most of your hinge.
Yeah but ropes are icky, and when the side explodes off and I smash the homeowners garage I can blame the freak weakness in the mortise I cut instead of my bad cut or inability to admit the tree should be chunked or rigged down.
A proper hinge will do the same thing.
For sure but this is a fells which professionals do
Can’t tell if you’re serious and that’s concerning lol
You forgot the /s
Im a professional, and no it is not
I bet you don't even wear safety shorts, though
You're right, just chainsaw pants and a hardhat like a fricken nerd!
but would you be able to move faster wearing just shorts and a tanktop??
Seriously. Dude I work with drops trees exactly where he wants every time. 99.9% of the time.
A video of this shows up every few weeks. For the amateurs out there thinking it looks cool: don't do it! Y’all are commenting as if this is r/arborists! Admittedly the post reads like it too, despite its gonewildandmild nature
Why would this tree be anymore prone to barber chairing than a standard cut? If anything it would be less likely to barber chair because of the boring
Not to mention the tree he's working with probably goes about 2 ft above where the camera cuts off.. it's clearly not a full tree If you look at the physics when it falls.
Bingo! @badboy, I was hoping I wasn't the only one to notice. (I'm buying you a beer)🍺
🍺cheers
I prefer a repeat of this one instead of the big tree that falls backwards onto the house.
I'm not even sure I understand how this helps fell it any tighter than a standard cut? It's still hinges around the original wedge cut

I see. It's more about defining a very specific direction than it is about reducing the fall radius. Thank you!
Yes even this tiny tree almost goes sideways on him.
So much sawdust in his dickhole
is that a Korn song?

new subreddit logo?
He’s got his short pants on. That’s how you know he’s a professional.
TIL all Australians are professionals!
I went to school with this guy - everyone said he’d never amount to anything, but just fucking look at him go. Wild!
Okay, yall convinced me to buy some chaps.
lol
Looks like a waste of gas to me.
He looks australian
Was gonna say, gotta be Aussy.
I love how stupid this video is in so many ways.
I bet he has a lot of saw dust in his shoes.
What kind of chaps are those?
Chapless.
Type O. As in, o no I cut my leg off.
I've never seen someone chainsaw with an Australian accent before, but this is definitely that.
Those shorts are straight out of the early 80s.
You could tell me this video was filmed in 1973 and I'd believe you.
I feel like grew up with dull chainsaw blades
cutting down balsa wood trees helps
The misspelling of mortise is appropriate in this case. Mortis = of death in Latin.
You can tell by the lack of safety gear this guy fucckkkkkssss
I’m just impressed with how fast that 260 is cutting. Chain sharp as hell or what
Kept waiting for his massive balls to fall out of his short shorts
After using the chainsaw for weeks without ear protection…I learned the chainsaw isn’t even that loud…my eardrums have grown stronger and they no longer hurt…
WHAT
He's an idiot, but he knows how to sharpen a chain saw.
This entire operation looks dangerous, from wearing shorts to standing in front of a notched tree, hacking out bits of it.
In his safety shorts at least! Due is a pro.
Mortise and Tenon sound like they should be a British claymation duo.
there's no way that tree is much taller than the top of the frame, looks way too light falling down
[deleted]
reasonably, one might argue
At least he is wearing blaze orange safety shorts, instead of normal shorts.
Why is this now * advanced *? Yesterday it was just plain advanced
unreal skills. his safety equipment is unmatched
The guy had a tiny stub. A big tree would not have been controlled this way. Hingewood is important. The only thing a technique like this does is prevent rolling of the stem after felling.
This isn't advanced, it's stupid. Professionals don't do shit like this when a simple face and a back cut will get the same results.
It's wild that this is even called advanced when it looks so sketchy. I'd rather take the extra time with a safer method than risk it for a viral clip.
One day this MFer is gonna end up dead/crippled and suddenly everyone is gonna be surprised and in shock. Kinda feel sorry for them already
you cut your notch right you don't have to go through all that.....what a waste of time....looks cool though...
I'm so tired of seeing this asshole posted to every felling page. He literally does this in every clip, every single one, with what is pretty much the same tree, same scenario every time. Its always the same species, rotten as hell, and doesnt need anything near this complicated or time consuming.
This is a good way to waste time, wear down equipment and super easy to fuck up and get you or someone hurt. So, no. It’s not a technique worth using
Is this guy Australian? Cus his vibe is Australian.
Damn that saw cuts fast or the video is sped up
This made my legs and feet itch
That guy fucks
I am by no means an expert but i was so pumped using this tech on a birch tree, it was one of the biggest i had see and it was dying. It worked perfect and was just exillerating!!
Bro is cutting down a 10 foot tree made of the softest wood known
Now, THAT is clever.
Cool.
Finally someone that runs a saw the same way I do.
haters gonna hate . are you all a bunch of Bartlettears ?
Safety squints and lack of chaps aside, the tree is probably cut down to 10' before he starts fucking around.
The only thing I noticed, was how sharp the teeth on that chain must be!!!! This guy is a master at sharpening a chain!
I thought my saw was sharp 🤷
Why aren’t larger trees dropped like this?
Guy needs a little more bar for that powerhead.
Damn, a wild Casey Neistat sighting.
oh ok all that for what?
This guy must be a god at Jenga
Who does this in shorts without safety goggles or ear protection. Holy cow. And not in a good way.
How did this not go wrong. Well cheers to him
That tree is only just larger than the videos being cropped to. The wobble on the back cut shows how small the tree is. It could still kill though.
So AI it hurts my soul
Bullshit.
A lot of work for the same end result
This guy will whip your ass at the local Jenga hall 😂
😳

This is safer and quicker.
Wow
I was waiting for the tree to fall sideways, snap the blade and crushed him based off the title of the sub
Cool. He made a hinge. But I’d have worn my brown shorts.
I see this cut only on this sub and I see it posted about at least once a day lol. Fucking boring 😴😴
Him being in shorts and bare legs is making me wince
He looks constipated
One diagonal cut 1/4-1/3 of diameter, tense a rope from the cut side, slowly cut from the opposite side till tree start falling. Stop cutting and wait till it falls.

This is a man who has never taken a mental health day.
I thought it was going the other way the whole time lol
I want to know what type of chain he's using because nothing I've tried can cut through a tree like that!
Thought that was Tim Robinson.
I'd say he's having a good time.

Correct uniform = obvious professional
Mm
Sharp fucking chain
Time wasted
I've followed this sub for less months than I've seen this repost
I'm pretty sure this is a clip from Reno 911
Not the most masculine lumberjack
No eye, ear, head, or leg pro, but he looks like he's wearing damn medieval sabatons on his feet??!
Apparently no one here is familiar with the "knucklehead cut"?
With tactical shorts and safety squints! I’ll
This guy trees.
The lack of PPE is disturbing.
I like the PPE
the mortis is from mort = dead
Not gonna lie....I feel like more math and fake work went into this than needed. A few diagonal cuts and we're solid.
Now THAT? Was SEX SAYYYYY 😍
