He [Gordon-Levitt] communicates like exactly the type of person who would be an asset to the legislative process. All of his videos like this (the ones i've seen, anyway) are so clear, thoughtful, and do a fantastic job of conveying relatively complex ideas in a very simple way.
no your right, you said a celeb is better than whatever is in DC, the white house is in DC and celebs should stay the fuck out of DC, and our politics - the white house :P
The sad thing is I feel like a lot of this is necessary because the union leaders ultimately signed a watered down agreement to end the strikes a few years back.
I know they were feeling pressured because the strikes went on far longer than anyone expected, but ultimately they signed deals that allowed AI in the back door, and we’re already seeing the consequences of that.
I’m glad this is covering beyond Hollywood though. Would love to see gaming industry insiders become involved too.
The entire fucking book industry please. I've been horrified at the thought that I'm likely going to just have to disregard everything published after a certain date just to avoid it. Like I will have to go hard after indie titles, and the country I'm in just doesn't have that kind of English book market
I get that he may have to temper his feelings about the tech in order to be seen as legitimate, but I don’t think genAI is “exciting” for creators in any way. It can only exist through theft of others’ creative work, by destroying the environment and raising consumer energy costs, and causing huge issues in far-reaching areas—from individual mental health and affecting our ability to learn and retain information to making it so disinformation and propaganda proliferates. There is no amount of good that can come from genAI in creative applications that would outweigh these facts for me.
Daniels really seem to care about running their sets with kindness & empathy & empowering the people they're collaborating with, so I'm glad Daniel Kwan is working on this.
I'm going to be controversial - he did a whole thing a while back where he got people to submit their work for free ("exposure") for his company hitRECord. It was for projects for folks like Ubisoft too. It was usually competitions where those who were selected were paid, but a lot of people put in lots of work and weren't selected where given nothing. I do not know if he's learned from that (it was 2010, so he very well may have.)
So I'm a little hesitant. I've always liked the guy other than that though.
As a lifelong creative, art enjoyer, and culture enthusiast.... if you told me 10 years ago that this was going to be our future reality, I would probably scoff it off as a dystopian nightmare scenario.
It feels apocalyptic to everything I love and live for. It's bleak.
I'm glad to see groups like this forming, but for part of me, it isn't enough. Why do we need to compromise? I'm tired. Exhausted.
Genuinely been depressed on and off since the AI bubble started inflating.
it’s maddening how developed it’s become in the last few years. i remember in 2023 when it’d be asked to “create” a human, it would generate a messy amalgamation of what BARELY looked like a person. when billion dollar companies insisted ai was the future, i didn’t expect it to be so soon but now it’s being thrust upon us at every turn both online and real life - factoring in the environmental implications and ethical questions it raises, it’s a mess.
we need laws on artificial intelligence NOW to stop it being exploited like it has but with the world being so crazy right now - i know it won’t be and working-class folk will definitely take the brunt of it.
It’s a good point there are no laws with AI. There are barely any laws stealing personal user data - and AI can process this faster and more accurately than ever before. All to serve us specifically targeted ads, to take what little money we have left.
AI is not going anywhere sadly and you’ll see people like him using his charisma and previous good will to profit off of it as it becomes more and more integrated in everything. Sorry but I see where this all is going. Call me pessimistic or whatever.

I heard him say this, that is how well you mimicked his speech and you are right

Exactly. It’s not exciting and inspiring. Please don’t frame it like that, JGL :/
Burn it all!
Daniels really seem to care about running their sets with kindness & empathy & empowering the people they're collaborating with, so I'm glad Daniel Kwan is working on this.
JGL is just such a likable human.
It lists Natasha Lyonne under founders of this coalition? I am confused. Isn't she making a movie with AI as we speak?

Do the vast majority of people get paid for using/posting/writing/photographing social media? HitRecord was a collaborative effort towards art.

If only we could just burn it all down.

I am so so glad to see some artists with power doing something like this.
As an artist with no power I have been feeling very doomer about AI
Sorry I know this isn’t the point of the post but god this man just doesn’t age
