It is used for other things, in the Tequila town you can take a tour and they teach you all the process, and they use the phrase “nothing is wasted” a lot haha
I believe the leaves are typically left in the field as mulch. The leaves cover the ground, helping to retain soil moisture, and they will eventually decompose and add carbon back into the soil; both very important benefits in an arid climate!
The core of the agave (pina) is steam cooked to turn the starches into sugars. The leaves (pencas) are used for various purposes but never in tequila distillation as it will give the final product an unpleasant astringent flavor.
Fun fact. The Vivanco Bros from NOM 1414 made their own proprietary yeast cultures from the pencas at their distillery in the highlands
I’ve done this. It’s really, really hard. The coa (the thing they use to cut) is super sharp and dangerous, the pinas weigh about 50kg each, and the juice is super acidic and will irritate your skin. You are supposed to be able to prepare one in like a minute, but took me 10 and I trashed it. All the jimadors had started the day by smoking some weed and drinking and they were a billion times better at it than I was.
Just trimming a blue agave a couple years ago I got the sap on the inside of my arm and even though I washed it immediately it burned the shit out of my arm.
Props to these incredible badass dudes.
That is the best zombie weapon.
It's called a Coa, and they are sharp as F*ck. Toes can get shaved off mighty easily
I love the people taking glam shots behind the guy working so hard.
No yellow lens filter? How am I supposed to know where this is located?
Awesome work though and that tool is crazy.

What part(s) do they sue to make the tequila? The core of the plant? The leaves? Everything?
The core, which he splits in half
can all the wasted leaves be used for anything, or just trashed?

not even Trashed Pandas?
Probably compost?
they go back into the soil
Why is it split there? Just easier to transport?
most likely yeah, they don't always do that, but this is a big boy
Ah thanks!

“We need to film someone harvesting for our promo video.”
“Omg you should film Steve!”

Never knew they look like giant pineapples
Literally called a piña for that reason
One day soon, that plant will become delicious tequila!
Man, that’s hard work
I got a blister from watching it.
where the fuck is Dwane the rock the tooth fairy jhonson? hes supposed to be there helping.
Ahh to be 28 again
That's a man who earns every penny of his living ... and probably deserves a substantial raise.
Anyone else think Obama was helping for a sec😂
That’s doesn’t seem very fast to me, but what do I know? I’m more familiar with the tequila/mezcal side of that equation.
I’ll never understand why the guy who gets paid the least is this guy. Smh
What's with the catchers gear on his shin?
Deflecting the blade from hitting the leg he's using to move the plant.
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Wards off the shin-biting tequila beetles
Tequila pinecone
Why can they not use the leaves for flavor also?
For conversions, there’s insignificant carbohydrate storage in leaves. Particularly, far less, the further the leaf from the heart.
Dude prolly does that 14 hours a day.
I would cut my foot off in the first 5 minutes.
Ravioli, ravioli
Give me tequila only
uNsKiLlEd LaBoR
Buena Pińa
Is the agave harmed by this?
And next we get Tequila!
Poor bats
Just wondering if there are many one eyed Jimadors. Agave spikes/leaves look crazy sharp

Man that blade made me so nervous watching that! That thing's like a huge razor!
