• You will be fine. In 5 years it won’t matter that you were on a different schedule than others.

  • Educationally and in terms of experience, it won’t matter in the long term.

However, having been the male resident in the “can you cover Dr. X’s clinic inbox/patients/inpatient obligations while she is on her maternity leave” side of things, I would advise you to Thank your coresidents when you return and be willing to cover/help out/return the favor if asked. The residents who end up covering for someone on maternity leave have lives as well and it’s unfortunately frequent that it goes unnoticed.

Further, please do not use your parental obligations as an excuse to get out of difficult/holiday shifts/call obligations. This again, happened frequently at my program and all it did was dump extra work on the other residents and keep them from their families.

I always get downvoted for saying that, but it is an uncomfortable truth

A really excellent perspective. Op, your co-residents covered you because they hope/expect everyone would do the same for them. So don’t take advantage - otherwise next thing you know no one will want to trade shifts/calls with you when you really need help.

Otherwise, this period will be a bump in the road. You won’t even remember this time in 5 years.
