  • Is that real Windows XP? 👀

    it's probably retrobar

  • Are.... are you in Windows XP? The OS that stopped getting security updates over a decade ago and is a giant gaping security exploit just sitting there, connected to the internet??

its like a pc skin for the aesthetic

No, it could be a skin, but unless that's your computer, you have no way of knowing. Folks show some mad stuff in this sub.

Well for starters FL Studio requires Windows 10

Fl 25 wouldn't ever run on XP

You must've watched that bloke who connected his own windows xp to the internet without a firewall and clickbaited the title.

This isn't XP I would know I am commenting from XP

So ur saying we should upgrade to windows 11 from 10?

hell no, get win 10 with the free year of ESU, with almost certainly another free year next October.

I already have windows 10 but its being discontinued. Mines no longer gets security updates

So enroll in ESU, the Extended Security Updates. If you play games, and any of those xbox games (doesn't matter if they're through Steam, etc. as long as you have an xbox account for them) good news, you already have a microsoft account that will qualify you for a free year of updates.

Have an actual microsoft account? Again: it's free. Settings -> Update & Security -> Windows Update, click "enroll now" and after it's done and you're enrolled you go to Settings -> Accounts -> Your info and then click the "Sign in with a local account instead" because fuck using an MS account to log into your own computer in your own house =D

  • Your tracks are all the same instrument. If you want different instruments for different tracks, you have to create more instruments on the channel rack and make patterns for those instruments.

This is your answer. This drove me nuts when I started using it and came from using other DAWs.

In FL, you can have a pattern control multiple instruments and/or multiple patterns control one instrument (which is the case here).

Option 1 you create a pattern. Then add instruments to the channel rack with the +. If you right click and turn on piano roll you can then add notes to that pattern in the piano roll. Benefits of this is seeing a ghost of other instruments in the same pattern. Many people start with this and then expand them out to separate patterns for arrangement.

Option 2 you can drag an instrument to the composition area and it will add a new pattern and instrument to the channel rack. Acts more traditional to how other DAWs work.

it blew my mind when i found out theres like 5 ways to do this but i'll still right click on the mixer track and route selected channels to a track out of pure habit

  • You are in pattern #5, which is empty yet. Switch to 1, 2, 3 or 4 and you'll see the notation for your instrument.

  • channel rack only shows current pattern

  • FL behaves a bit different from other DAWs, The tracks are not tied to your channels or instruments, the tracks aren't really tied to anything. You choose what patterns and instruments you wanna put on your tracks, you can have anything on any track, several patterns on one track or one pattern on several tracks. Think of the tracks as your canvas and the channel rack as your palette of paint.

Ninja edit: Also you connect from your channel rack to your mixer and not the tracks to your mixer. So the tracks (and the entire playlist) is just the layout and order of your different sounds and controls if that makes sense

for a beginner (or anyone really, except in specific situations) they might as well use track mode to automatically link the channel+playlist+mixer and avoid all of this

  • It is. The piano

  • People aren't giving you all of the information. FL Studio doesn't have a specific workflow and you need to find what suits you. You can tie an instrument to a specific playlist track by right clicking the playlist track and setting its track mode to "instrument" for example. That way the playlist track will be linked to a specific instrument, and a specific mixer channel.

i tried setting the tracks on to instrumental mode and i could separate and make them appear, but they dont make any sound when i mute the "grand piano" one

God, you need different actual instruments in the channel rack, you add them with the Add button in the menu bar, then in the piano roll of those patterns you'll see in the top what instrument those notes are playing, you can change it by selecting and cutting (Ctrl A and then Ctrl X) and switching the instrument up there and pasting (Ctrl V) ensuring the play head is at the start

Is it hard to give the info without putting the condescending “god” at the beginning?

Actually, yes, because it's in the manual and god knows that

  • are you also new to using Windows too?

  • I have a better question

  • Double click for example "Pattern 1" on the left side of the playlist. It will open the channel rack of that pattern, and there you go.

it does work and i get it,but is there any way on making the different tracks appear separately on the channel rack just like instruments do?

No, channel rack is for instruments, not tracks

Nope. Channel rack is a unique pattern. Track will be created on the playlist by combining different patterns. If a pattern contains multiple different instruments with notes, then yes it will all show in one - but otherwise a pattern is more like a one musician in a band.

It is possible to create a track in the playlist by creating every step of a track in one pattern after another. It's just not very handy way of things unless you are using a good old tracker software.

Yes, it's possible. The thing is, if you're using the same instrument for all tracks, you'd have to insert the instrument's VST file for each track. So, if you have 5 tracks, you'd have to load the instrument 5 times so that they appear separately in the channel track, allowing you to work on them one by one in the master.

  • They are. you just need to select the patterns you want the melody of, as all your patterns are the same instrument

  • uhh, you are overstressing my brain man! i cant think of an answer.

  • Check the drop down next to channel rack. You may have plug-ins routed to individual racks.
