Some meme creator is making really bad pancakes...

    parent

This meme should about "first crepe versus second crepe". That "pancake" looks brutal.

    parent root
    2 points nowhereiswater

Yup makes canada look like trash with that burnt crap.

    parent root
    19 points AthanAllgood

The second picture has raised in me the ire of generations of Canadians.

Expect either retaliatory war crimes, or a disapointed lowering of eyebrows. One of those.

    parent root
    10 points gdude0000

First we toss crepes to them. Do it for a few days till they get used to it. Then suddenly toss pancakes! The unexpected added weight will crush them!

    parent root
  • 210 points flywithRossonero

Im a québécois but to say crepe is Québécois is like saying poutine is from france…

    parent
    63 points kank84

It's also funny to reference the English here, as people from England would call crepes pancakes, and what we would call pancakes they call American pancakes.

    parent root
    11 points homogenousmoss

Its an older Quebecquois thing to say english, which I imagine the meme creator is. When I grew up it was litterally french vs english as a faction. We used to say « les crisse d’anglais » (paraphrasing the fucking english), meaning very specifically english speaking canadians. Not americans or British, just the canadian english speakers. We didnt care if you were vietnamese or haitian (there were so few minorities that it was just an interesting novelty), what mattered was did you speak french or english. There would be many a bar brawl or school yard fight of the peasoup/frog vs the tête carrée. It was hate and seggregation by language, not ethnicity. I love that humanity is always ready to innovate when it comes to that.

    parent root
    3 points koolaidkirby

Before that it was catholics vs protestants, people will always find something.

    parent root
    2 points rpgguy_1o1

English pancakes are closer to crepes but somewhere in between, at least the ones I had were very dense and probably 2-3x thicker than a crepe

    parent root
    3 points kank84

It sounds like you had bad ones. I grew up in the UK and have eaten a lot of pancakes there, and they were crepes.

    parent root
    3 points rpgguy_1o1

That's very possible, the rest of the breakfast was pretty bad

    parent root
    1 points thinplanksk8r

Me too. My dad called crepes English pancakes. Always put golden Treacle on them.

    parent root
    1 points Metafield

Just the ones you had. I’m from England and can confirm they are crepes

    parent root
    1 points D3ATHTRaps

    American pancakes? Even more cringe.

    parent root
    5 points chat-lu

It doesn't say that crêpes are from Québec. It says that Québec prefers crêpes and that the rest of Canada prefers crap.

    parent root
    2 points asktheages1979

Is there really that much of a QC/RoC division on this, though? I've had pancakes in Quebec, at a hugely popular Quebecois restaurant chain, my colleagues from Quebec eat pancakes, many sites list pancakes as a traditional breakfast in Quebec. I actually prefer the thinner crêpes, and that's the only way I make them, and I could believe they're comparatively more popular in QC, but it's not like pancakes are shunned in Quebec, nor are crêpes shunned in English Canada. We have Cora's all over the country, even if it's originally from QC, and they have a whole crêpe menu. There's a whole crêperie in the biggest mall in St. John's, NL.

Agreed, but only if it’s a true Belgian waffle in all its fluffiness, thickness and tastiness. ONE waffle like this is more than enough to sustain a full grown man until noon while delivering one’s mandatory daily intake of maple syrup. Not one of those flat thing the Yankee call « waffle ».

    parent root
    1 points loginisverybroken

plus you can put some berries on top in the berry holding squares

    parent root

We'll glad to let u know about it. Also usually our pancakes (/pfannkuchen) are a little bit less thick than the pancakes in the picture, but more thick than the crepes. Can't wrap it up if it's really thick. I never had english pancakes tbh tho

    parent root
    2 points GenghisConThe1st

Oo thats kinda how I like to make my own pancakes at home! Im not a big fan of the very thick ones cause they absorb to much of the syrup we use here. Ill have to look up a recipe for the German style and see if its similar to what I do!

1 cup each of: flour and milk 1/2 tbs each of white sugar, baking powder and vanilla extract 1 egg

    Mix until smooth.

1- egg, 1C flour, 1C milk. 1/2 tsp salt, 3/4 tsp baking powder, 1 TBSP sugar, (sift into flour). 1/2 tsp vanilla, 1 TBSP oil (mixed with egg and milk). Mix all together, let rest for 2-3mins before using.

    This is racist against pancakes.

You show crepes all fine, well off and cooked as if living in a middle upper class suburb of Quebec, QC while portraying pancakes as tired and worn out, used up and burnt like they live in Sarnia, ON

The reality is that there are well done pancakes and well done crepes.  As well as poor versions of both.

We need to accept diversity and appreciate all batter based fried delights if we truly want a strong culture.

    parent
    3 points disillusiondporpoise

Yeah, pourquoi pas les deux? Both can be delicious if done well and meh if done poorly. Not to mention frybread, syriniki, dosa, boxty, etc. Our strength lies in being open to all pan fried deliciousness!

    parent root
  • 10 points taint-ticker-supreme

    parent
    8 points TheStupendusMan

Pretty sure if the crepe rises then you just have another pancake.

    parent root
    2 points taint-ticker-supreme

They'd still be exponentially better than regular pancakes. It's like comparing food to cardboard. Crêpes win.

    parent root
  • 10 points okokokoyeahright

well, to stick my oar in this thing:

the crepe, being thinner and lighter, can be more easily rolled up into a nice tight cylinder and inserted rectally for those who can't stand its bland basic taste. The rubbery texture allow for more to be pushed into the receptacle with out undue effort. A liberal coating of oil or butter or just plain old lard will also allow for more effortless pushing too. Jam or syrup is a bit too sticky though.*

as to the lovely soaking of the syrup and its more crumbly texture, especially when when combines with crumbed bacon or sausage, the humble and modest pancake allows for a wider range of textures when made with things other than pure white wheat flour(the blandest of all flours). It more robust and hearty flavor when made with this in mind, tends it to be a higher form of pan made cakes.

    *or so I am told.

The foregoing is a personal take and not to be taken as authoritative unless of course you are one of those creepy crepe people, then Fuck You in particular.

Haha, as a Canadian who grew up here with Finnish grandparents that prepared crepes for us, definitely agree. Pancakes here are terrible in comparison

In Québec French, we call both pancakes and crêpes crêpes. Unless it's made with buckwheat flour, then we call it galette de sarrasin.
