The Dollar Tree by my house usually has their dumpsters locked, but for whatever reason wasn't tonight and bc of that had a lot of stuff that normally isn't in there. I grabbed a box that was taped up, thinking it was Nativity stuff for some reason and I just opened it up and there is a dead puppy in there. I am so heartbroken and disgusted. I have to call the cops bc I don't think animal control is open right now but holy crap this is not what I wanted to find 😭

I also don't think there are cameras back there either to see what sicko would do this to a poor animal.

  • Oh how awful. Sending hugs friend.

Thank you, I wasn't expecting this as I don't think anyone would. Have to call Animal Control in the morning and tell Dollar Tree to keep their stuff locked up 😞

Unfortunately locking one dumpster will just make them find a different one. Terrible situation. 😭

Telling them to lock the dumpster will just keep people from getting anything good that's thrown out. It would not save the puppy. Leave the dumpster unlocked, get the cops to look at the parking lot camera and find the puppy killer rather than punishment for people trying to get in the dumpster.

  • Maybe it was taped shut in an attempt to not have someone accidentally stumble upon it. Something may have been wrong with the puppy and maybe that shirt smelled like its favorite human. It’s traumatic for some people losing a pet or honestly, someone may have tried to rescue that puppy but it died soon anyway. You throw anything together without thinking and maybe sincerely intend to find a place to bury but with no backyard you are scared to get caught trying to dig a hole in public.

I offer these possibilities because you are far too optimistic about what would or can be done if it’s nefarious. I am sorry for that and for what you found. Truly.

I agree. I posted something similar. I feel like cuz it was taped up that someone actually cared for this puppy and did NOT kill it. At least not purposely. And they tried to give it a burial but prob couldn't so they had put it in the dumpster. A puppy killer would NOT do that. They would prob just throw it in a bag and toss it out a window or something. There was actual compassion in the disposal of it. It could be that the ground might have been frozen or they didn't have time to give it a proper burial and had no choice but to throw it in the trash.

I am thinking it most likely succumbed to Parvo. Poor sweet baby pupper.

Yes. Very likely. I lost a few puppies to Parvo. Sux. There is no cure. You really know your stuff tho. I'm sorry about the dogs you lost. 😥 If that's what happened. Unless maybe you are a vet.

Yes or they lived in an apartment with no where to burry it. There are so many other options then they killed it. Puppies that fit into a shoe box most likely was under a few weeks old and succumbed to Parvo or jist failure to thrive.

You don't know what an animal killer would do to hide the crime. Pure speculation.

What, you're gonna throw a dead puppy in a dumpster and expect nobody to see or smell it immediately?

We really don't know ANYTHING about this. Aren't we literally all just here with opinions and speculation?? Isn't that like half of all reddit posts? 🤦 Calm down Sherlock Holmes. Are you new here?? Jeez. We don't need more negativity on top of an already heartbreaking tragedy.

Oh boy you sure showed me watson.

    This ain't it kid.

  • was it like new born didn't make it puppy maybe or bigger..?

  • Hey. They were already dead . So, they were not alone in a box, looking for family: that's just a body. Thank you for caring about them past their last moments and i hope someone cares for you w the same depth at your end.

We don't know that they were dead when taped into the box though...

Are we going to get a forensic team on the case to figure it out? I'm a bit confused why they called the cops

It’s potentially a criminal charge if it’s found that the animal was alive before the box.

Cops rarely arrest and charge people with animal cruelty and death even when they have full evidence and know who the perpetrators are. They certainly won’t do anything in this case unfortunately.

Bc who throws an animal away like that.

Plenty of people dispose of dead animal corpses in the trash, it likely died of some disease like lots of puppies do or was hit by a car and the person disposed of it. Why are we assuming we have a sinister puppy killer on our hands when there are 50 explanations before it?

Calling the cops for this is ridiculous

No, we do not. We can and shall loathe anyone that treated a being like that, and we will simlelorate the one in the box. Let's call them Four, for the aspects of their coffin. Dream well, Four. May no one interrupt your sleeping joy, and may you gift it to any that ask.

    Buy they probably were

  • That’s the saddest thing I’ve read in a long time, so sorry you had to see that but good that you did so it’s not just dumped. Call animal control and they’ll take it if you don’t want to bury it. ;(

  • I'm sorry if this feels cold, but I have to ask... I can understand calling about a human body, but does that hold true for animals as well? Maybe for a tortured animal, but the description here doesn't sound like that.

  • Oh man I feel for you gloves are a necessity. So many times I have dug my hands into a bag to quickly realize oh fuck that's a dead kitten or yuck used tampons

  • Most likely, wont be found who did it. Please do a burial and give it some decency.

It has duct tape and a dirty wife beater inside and granted I touched the tape not knowing what was inside but I'm really hoping for a Forensic File type moment on the poor baby. I'm about to look the shoebox up as well and start looking at shoes now around the neighborhood.

    The authorities won’t care

Depends on the condition of the dog. If it was mutilated, they might investigate because that's a huge risk factor for the person being a serial killer or other violent offender. Hopefully there is something personally identifiable other than fingerprints and DNA.

In Michigan, a mother and daughter put a puppy into scalding, boiling water! Puppy survived, daughter posted about the event on social media. The two maniacs were NEVER CHARGED!! The puppy was burned down to bone! Our country SUCKS when it comes to prosecuting animal abuse cases. Not knowing the back story on the puppy in the box, the authorities have nothing to go on. Chances are great that they're not going to spend resources chasing a mystery.

That's really terrible to hear. Some other states wouldn't hesitate to arrest someone with that much evidence.

So traumatic people are so heartless

  • Animal control tells you to put dead animals in the dumpster. As terrible as it sounds, it’s exactly what you are supposed to do and what they do when they find animals. My guess is this persons puppy died and they couldn’t afford cremation.

As horrible as it was for you, imagine how it feels to be that person. I’ve made that call to animal control before many times for deceased domestic animals found on the road and each time it’s the same : unfortunately put them in the garbage. I’ve had to do it myself and it’s terrible but this was taped up and not just tossed in-which tells me they probably cared.

You don’t know anyone’s story, it’s not always the terrible one we tell ourselves.

  • Damn... That's messed up. I wonder if it was dead before being put in the box or if some sicko binned a living dog...

  • This hits home, because I go regularly and I went to a dg a few miles from my home one night and looked the dumpster. I was excited because I saw a lot of black bags tied up and I picked one up and it was heavy- good sign, right? Wrong. It felt oddly empty, but heavy still, so I tore a hole in the top. Inside there was a puppy (large puppy) looked to be maybe 4 months old, and I saw huge fleas jumping around , so I laid the bag down and cut it open in case the pup was alive, but it was gone. He was warm so I must've missed it by minutes. Well I went to check these other similar looking bags while on the phone for police assistance, and found three more. They must've suffocated, and it broke my heart. I cried all the way home and I still can't stop to look in that one particular dumpster. I never heard anything about what happened with the pups.

  • If you really want something done, go to social media. Get the story to local news channels. Our city is on social media and I have seen both the pd and fd do something on stories like this.

This is the way actually Post it on FB and everywhere

  • I hate saying this but the duct tape sometimes indicates a “bait dog”. How awful this happened to that poor pup, and you too. There is a special place in Hell I hope for people that do this.

I don't see any wounds, but was clearly starved. I just want justice for the babe. I'll ask them if they will do an investigation bc there's gotta be some God DNA on that WB.

I kind of wish I didn't go snooping, but at the same time maybe their killer can be found bc I did. Idk, just sick to my stomach right now 😖

Do you have a local animal advocacy group? I’ve got one locally and they work in collaboration with law enforcement and news stations to bring things to light.

  • So very 😔 sad.😪😪😪

  • That's sad I love animals and if I saw that I'd be balling my eyes out I can't even watch the ASPCA or St.Jude Children Hospital commercials because they're innocent and don't deserve that Sending hugs and prayers

  • I have no idea what led up to this, but having a dog put down and let the vet handle the earthly remains is over $300 here. It's sad any way you look at it.

  • I mean, animals die. It might not be anyone's fault, they might have found it dead, and what the hell do you do with a dead puppy in the middle of a shopping center? I mean, its shitty, but sos life.

  • How awful, I’m sorry.

I just read that anti-vaxxing has hit the veterinary practices. Dog owners are refusing to vaccinate their puppies, so there’s a huge increase of parvo cases. Parvo is extremely deadly especially to puppies.

Everyone, make sure your dogs are up to date on their vaccines!

  • It's entirely possible that the poor critter was already dead, and the previous owner had no way to bury it/ no place to bury it/ couldn't afford to have it buried. Even pet burial or cremation is going up in price lately, and they may not have had the funds. If they live in an apartment or something, and don't have the money right now, there's very little they can do. When I was a kid, we lived in apartments and when one of my parakeets would die, we'd have to put it in the freezer until we could make it to the pet cemetery. Depending on the size of the puppy, that probably wasn't an option. It's possible that whoever disposed of it did love the dog, but had no other choice than to do what they did. It's also December, and depending on location, the ground may be frozen. I'm sorry you found it, though, that must have been one hell of a shock. I do appreciate also how much you care. A lot of people out where I live now don't seem to care much for their animals. They let them run free and there's no end to the roadkill, both wild animals and pets.

  • I know it was horrific to find, I'm Sure, 😣 but most likely the puppy died on accident or from a medical issue and not by foul play. Most puppy killers would NOT bother putting it in a box and taping it up like that. It was like they were trying to give it a funeral, but prob had nowhere to bury it or maybe the ground was too frozen. It's super sad, but I think it's just something that happens in life. The cops unfortunately won't be able to do much, except file a report. I hope you are ok and this doesn't cause you lasting emotional harm. HUGS 🫂

  • I think you are overly optimistic as to the attention any authorities are going to give this, but seems like your heart is in the right place. Best of luck, hope I'm wrong.

I am so sorry you had to see this, but the authorities will be of no help 😢

Maybe not starved, but failure to thrive, giardia, hypoglycemia, etc. It's awful what happened and nobody should ever do that! But maybe it was their way of burying it if they live in an apartment or are homeless.

I agree police and animal control need to be involved, but unless there are cameras around, it's doubtful they'll be found. Telling the store is a good idea. I'm sorry you had to find that, but at least the poor puppy will have a proper burial now. We know you loved the puppy enough to try and find justice.

Please post an update, if you get one. RIP poor baby.

Yeah telling the authorities for documentation reasons, telling the store for safety reasons, and giving the dog a proper service is about all you can do OP. I can’t imagine how hard this was to find/see/deal with.

  • Post it to social media and every local dumpster will have padlocks. What did the cops say?

  • Sending you hugs

  • Yikes. I found a dead kitten once.

  • Omg my heart, I am so sorry. That poor baby.

  • The cops/animal control would just put it in a dumpster anyway so no need to call. Very upsetting for you, sorry

  • Jesus Christ 🙏

  • Holy eff. I'm so sorry. That's so upsetting. I found a deceased lactating female pit on the side of the road once. She was so thin. People can be truly awful. Thank you for being one of the good ones.

  • I once found a whole bunch of dead geese in varying states of disassembly in a Joannes dumpster…but I also found like 500 sewing patterns nicely boxed up so it was worth it?

  • That really sucks, I'm so sorry that happened to you and that the doggo was disrespected like that. I can't describe how much trauma i would have if i was in your shoes.

  • That's so incredibly sad. I can't imagine the suffering. My God some people are freaking savages.

  • Ohh. What a big deal. NOT. U FREAK out way to easily, get a grip .. Call cops for what. Lmao U act like u found a dead baby.

  • Contact the local shelters to get a scan. It is unlikely, but it might be a puppy they have had something to do with, and can find who had him/her after. If so, it is at least possible to blacklist them from adopting more.

    Long shot, but yeah.

  • Oh my god that’s horrific. I’m so sorry you had to see that. I cant even imagine. Please let the police know! Some sick bastard would otherwise get away with it. Sending you a warm hug, and hoping you can see a counsellor or someone to talk with.

  • Call the cops please. Or I can do it for you if you’re scared
