Being oppressed makes their actions justifiable. They have to be in the receiving end of all the bad otherwise they would just be schizo weirdos living in their mom’s basement.
What would you describe the current social, economic, and political climate as? I don’t think there’s many good faith ways of describing it that aren’t somewhat dystopian.
Social Climate: In the grip of consent culture. One's will is held up as the ultimate moral paradigm. Whether that's good or bad is up to you, but I know anytime I've said at-will divorce should be reformed to be less of a thing, everyone freaks out. So they must like it.
Economic Climate: Amazing. Literally no one in the US goes hungry, goes without all the resources you need to be successful and live with dignity. Free food, Free internet, Free place to sleep, Free Phones, Free Tablets. Jobs are easy to get and pay is really good. Basically everyone has the standard amenities, such as electricity and indoor plumbing.
Poltical Climate: Pretty good. There have no devastating disruptions like 9/11 in over a generation now. People's rights are firmly secure and any potential threat like anarchy or tyranny are far off. Politics are gradually moving the in a liberal direction where people are fighting over tax policy rather than banning LGBT rights or interracial couples like in the past generations.
Holy fuck I wish I lived in the US you seem too, but I have never been so blindsided by a person’s view of this country. Fuck. I don’t even know where to begin.
Im sure you dont. Hard to know when to begin when I'm right.
I mean, it's a fact the state has been providing people with phones since 2012, and tablets since the early 2020s. I personally own an 'Obama Phone' as people generally call them. A tablet too, though I never use it. Got both for free. Like any poor american can. No one has been going hungry since the end of the great depression. soo... That's a non issue. As for jobs, I have no idea how you could deny they're easy to get. America, even compared to other 1st world countries, is easily the simplest country in the world to get a job. Starting wages for Walmart, the bottom of the Barrel are $14 an hour. That's more than double the starting wage of most jobs globally.
As for the Political Climate: Can you tell me what HUGE catastrophe has hit the country since 9/11? Something where our very foundations were rocked? Anything on Par with Oct 7 in Israel or the Syrian Civil war or Russia's invasion of Ukraine? Or are you talking about the liberal trend in the US. 20 years ago 1/3 people thought interracial relationships were morally wrong, and only 40% of democrats thought gays should be able to get married.
Republicans support gay marriage today more than dems did in 2000, do you doubt we're moving in a pro-lgbt direction with that info?
Literally the US government tells us that in 2023 13.5% of American families experienced food insecurity at some point that year. (USDA) There are countless more links to refute your statement that literally no one goes hungry. So you are acting in bad faith, you are delusional, or unskilled in using Google. We are not able to tell from your comments which of those is the answer
From the government: Very low food security (old label = Food insecurity with hunger): reports of multiple indications of disrupted eating patterns and reduced food intake.
Including going the whole day without food.
Same link I provided, so I’m narrowing it down to bad faith and/or delusional.
Im just being hyperbolic. My gf is an artist so I know that not all of them hate AI but man the misinformation that some of them just regurgitate online is annoying.
Remember a few years ago when video games would be praised if they made their NPC AIs or any other AI work great? Now it's a trend to hate on it I guess
I'm still waiting for all this AI shit to make my video game AI better. So far all its done for me is make awful art and give me frame generation which makes my games look like misty soup and crash even more than usual... woooo.
I'll start believing AI is going somewhere when it makes AIs in games better.
I remember when Quake 2 came out it touted its advanced AI on the box saying that the enemies do not want to die and will try to survive. And Nintendo sold an expansion pak on the N64 that claimed it would improve the AI in some games.
even if this "bubble" pops, it would just cause a mild recession like the dot com bubble back in the year 2000 that won't affect much in the economy
and besides, job displacement for new technology isnt new at all, in fact, AI can give out some new jobs in compensation, and most of the jobs lost are either things like graphic design or entry level work, the blue collar segment would be unnaffected
People conveniently ignore history when making doom predictions.
Imagine the industrial revolution: "Won't somebody think of the farmers??"
More than 80% of the US population were farmers in the early 1800s, now its less than 1%. The 'displaced' farmers didn't all starve to death and go away, they got awesome jobs that were easier to do and earned them more money and that's where we are today. Why would another technological revolution be any different?
AI is ruining everything! Meanwhile AI has been used for, as I can recall, at least 2 decades, in video games at least
So basically it's old tech being recycled for new uses, which is a standard practice everywhere for all of human history.
Also, these people are the same people who will gloat and say the reason an immigrant took your job is because you just weren't skilled enough, but cry if you say the same thing about their art degrees
They’re just mad their art degree got them a job as a worker drone in some graphic design firm. They’re mad that their talent can’t keep up with some boomer middle manager who writes a few sentences into an AI.
That's really not a just comparison. AI in games vs. the AI bubble today are homophones at best, not at all the same thing conceptually or in practice.
Dont you get it? The EVIL AI COMPANIES are leveling up every forest on the planet to make their EVIL DATACENTERS which drain 80000 gazillion of gallons of water per picosecond, all of it to make their EVIL AI that they use to destroy the raw concept of creativity, and its feasting on everyone's brains and eradicating art and turning humanity into EVIL AI ZOMBIES
Insider trading, despite not turning a profit the stock value of Invidia and AI companies has ballooned dramatically, which makes their wealth go up as they can borrow more from banks using their stocks as collateral. When it fails, the government usually bails out the banks and their investors.
Investors are always shafted whenever a company fails or the government bails out. A bailout is probably the worst thing you want for a company you are invested in.
Its although an oversimplification of reality.
Much of how we're going to look at AI will depend on how we integrate it into society and this can go both ways.
Its a universal truth that AI is going to replace atleast some of the current workers. That's literally the basis of what technological advancement means.
When electricity became widespread, thousands of streetlighters (people who lit streetlights) lost their job.
When the car became more widespread millions of people lost their job in an elaborate industry catering to horses and carriages.
What also will depend, lesser so for normies and more important for nations is which AI will prevail and become the standard. But let's say the US loses the race against China, that means the US economy will see some damages. Are we going to notice that directly? Most likely not.
If you can fix your democracy to actually work at carrying out the wishes of the people, you will be fine. If you fail in this regard, things will get much worse.
I mean is this unreasonable though? Altman has already floated a bailout in interviews and with so much of the stock market tied to AI gains (I think something like 80%+ of the S&P gains is tied to AI) a bailout isn’t crazy to assume would happen. And if we get the reality on the right do we think famously individualistic America is going to start doing generous government handouts overnight?
I’m genuinely curious as to what yall think is gonna happen with this.
What even is this bailout they keep yammering on about? The government is just going to give NVIDIA a trillion dollars because their stock value went down and they lost a few customers? They are a viable business without those customers, just not a company that can command a $5T market cap anymore. Yet this is something people genuinely believe for some reason.
I won't say I don't understand people who doom about AI, because I do - it does, on the first glance, seem depressing and scary that AI may do our jobs more efficiently than we ever could.
But remember one thing - the thing AI is replacing us at production of slop. Something with no soul, something with a low level of responsibility, and typically something generic. If you want to ensure you don't fall victim to that, just master a certain craft. It doesn't have to be art, or a blue-collar position, but something you are just exceptionally good at and can do as good as possible. For instance, I don't think we'd ever see ,,AI plumbers" or ,,AI electricians" soon, people still pay for commissions of art, and there are still IT specialists in companies.
AI makes it easier for us to do easy things - so we ought to become experts in more difficult ones.
Yeah this is what happened in every market crash in our economy, the wealthy tank the economy, get bail outs, and rinse and repeat. This is a cycle of late stage capitalism and AI is just the next big investment scheme.
Do these people just, imagine themselves living in Cyberpunk universe or something? They think they're David Martinez getting fucked by Giancarlo?
They think cyberpunk is the best case scenario
It's just their weird persecution fetish/power fantasy since they wanna seem like revolutionaries
They want to be victims and oppressed so bad for some reason. Their heads will explode if/when they face actual persecution/oppression
I want to be a victim. Just not like that!
Being oppressed makes their actions justifiable. They have to be in the receiving end of all the bad otherwise they would just be schizo weirdos living in their mom’s basement.

I’m being baited oh good bait honestly
You are not.
what is it you actually disagree with?
The free phones and tablets?
The no political catastrophe since 9/11?
you really think America was more liberal when everyone hated gays and 33% of people were segregationists??
Speak up. Give me a specific.
The state's definition of food insecurity is lack of access of healthy nutritional food.
The 'food insecure' aren't going hungry. They're just not having access to a balanced diet.
Totally different thing.
I am not acting in bad faith, and you dont know what you're talking about.
From the government: Very low food security (old label = Food insecurity with hunger): reports of multiple indications of disrupted eating patterns and reduced food intake.
Including going the whole day without food.
Same link I provided, so I’m narrowing it down to bad faith and/or delusional.
I like how artists believe they live in a world where the only jobs are artists or billionaires.
Most artists have day jobs. I don't really get the contempt for artists from people who like AI....
Im just being hyperbolic. My gf is an artist so I know that not all of them hate AI but man the misinformation that some of them just regurgitate online is annoying.
So annoying, I love hanging out with my artist friends but it really feels like they don’t know a darn thing about it sometimes
Remember a few years ago when video games would be praised if they made their NPC AIs or any other AI work great? Now it's a trend to hate on it I guess
That’s because it’s entirely different kinds of AIs being used for dramatically different purposes.
I'm still waiting for all this AI shit to make my video game AI better. So far all its done for me is make awful art and give me frame generation which makes my games look like misty soup and crash even more than usual... woooo.
I'll start believing AI is going somewhere when it makes AIs in games better.
Those are entirely different kinds of AI, Gen AI would never be able to handle the complicated decision making needed for video games
Yea, which is why it's garbage.
Exactly, Gen AI is hot garbage so it’s really alarming that they have put half of the GDP into it
I remember when Quake 2 came out it touted its advanced AI on the box saying that the enemies do not want to die and will try to survive. And Nintendo sold an expansion pak on the N64 that claimed it would improve the AI in some games.
Entirely different things
even if this "bubble" pops, it would just cause a mild recession like the dot com bubble back in the year 2000 that won't affect much in the economy

True
I believe it could be worse than 2000 because much more of everyone's 401Ks and stocks are wrapped up in the big tech companies
AI is ruining everything! Meanwhile AI has been used for, as I can recall, at least 2 decades, in video games at least
So basically it's old tech being recycled for new uses, which is a standard practice everywhere for all of human history.

Redditors when their field which has low job security and is constantly changing changes and has low job security: 🤯🤯🤯
Trying to compare standard the AI of a video game NPC to this recent wave of generative AI within the last 3 years is a CRAZY claim.
Immigrants don't rush to America to do commissions on Fiverr so they don't care.
That's really not a just comparison. AI in games vs. the AI bubble today are homophones at best, not at all the same thing conceptually or in practice.
Dont you get it? Yeah, but just take out your contestant use of evil and use real numbers and you kinda got it
I'm interpreting that last panel as sex robots so I'm not sure why anybody is dooming on that.
i am unable to see the connection between ai and billionaires getting rich
The owners of AI companies are billionaires
People use AI -> investors invest in AI companies -> AI company owners get more money
Don't you get it? There are NO good uses of AI because it can't count the Rs in a strawberry /s also Moravec's paradox
What about that image is unique to AI? Its so generic they could have made it about anything.
I think rich may stuffings
Just not much
Stuffings?
Not as doomer as you think.
Its although an oversimplification of reality. Much of how we're going to look at AI will depend on how we integrate it into society and this can go both ways.

Commies being doomers and not understanding anything about the world?
WOWZA! WHATA SHOCKER!
If you can fix your democracy to actually work at carrying out the wishes of the people, you will be fine. If you fail in this regard, things will get much worse.
So, we should enjoy our lives while they last.
No need to worry about problems that we have no control over.
I mean is this unreasonable though? Altman has already floated a bailout in interviews and with so much of the stock market tied to AI gains (I think something like 80%+ of the S&P gains is tied to AI) a bailout isn’t crazy to assume would happen. I’m genuinely curious as to what yall think is gonna happen with this.
Based on how lame and recognizable the AI slop is alone, be a long while before it takes that many jobs
What even is this bailout they keep yammering on about? The government is just going to give NVIDIA a trillion dollars because their stock value went down and they lost a few customers? They are a viable business without those customers, just not a company that can command a $5T market cap anymore. Yet this is something people genuinely believe for some reason.
Learn to code losers
