Civil unions should have been elevated to equal status with marriage rather than gay marriage getting an exemption carved out just for them via legal ruling. As it is, there's still a lot of legal mazes to navigate when it comes to your partner if you don't want the religious ceremony of marriage, especially in regards to medical visitations.
Further, gay marriage (or the elevation of civil unions) needs to be codified into federal law (Or universal state law, but that's trickier) rather than rely on a court ruling. Roe v. Wade says hello. Learn from history.
I'd also really like to separate marriage (religious ceremony) and marriage (government recognizing a bond between two people) but that's a sticky wicket that I don't expect to get untangled in my lifetime. I'm uncomfortable forcing priests to perform ceremonies they disagree with, but at the same time, when you've put a lot of work into being the federal gatekeeper...well, the organizations have put themselves into a position where they need to be forced.

Like when the Luigi Mangione incident happened--the amount of people who would otherwise tell you that the death penalty and violence is immoral were cheering on a husband and father being murdered for no reason because the killer had the 'right' politics (and was hot). Ditto for the Kirk killing. I also am anti death penalty and that is why it's extremely easy for me to say "killing is bad you shouldn't do it."
