That’s generally how this parasite works. Grows and eats all the organs to then force the mantis into another body of water where it can spread more worms. Things like fish will eat the mantis and larvae alike

But when I watch Alien I know that they're not real. This thing is real... This thing is nightmare fuel. I want it to not exist and I'm willing to employ WMDs on its home planet.
Hi parasitologist here. For those interested this is a gordian or horsehair worm (Nematomorpha) a unique group of worms related to nematodes that are obligate parasites (parasitism is necessary for their life cycle). Their lifecycle makes them 'parasitoids', meaning their larval stages are parasitic (most often killing the host) but their adult stage is free living (aquatic in their case), think xenomorphs from the Alien movies.
Adults basically fuck and then die in the water (only love a couple weeks) laying eggs, from which first stage larva emerge to be eaten by an intermediate host, often the aquatic larval stage of flying insects like mayflies or dragonflies. They live in them until their hosts emerge as adults where they are eaten by a larger, often terrestrial, predator insect, like this praying mantis, which is the definitive host (final host). Now the fucked up shit. The final stage larva grows into an adult, feeding on the hosts haemolymph (bugs cavity fluid that acts as their blood) and tissue. When its ready it hijacks the hosts nervous system via chemicals that make it seek water, at which point the worm emerges finally killing the host. Adults find each other, fuck and die completing the cycle.
Apparently they dont breathe from their mouth. Also, I understand once infested by the worm, it is too late. For reference the worm would be pool noodle sized to a human.
Well, if they breathe with their entire body that's still half of their body above water. The worm is a different matter. Yeah, I'd also guess that anything with a parasite so big compared to its own body size is not long for this world anymore...
The host always dies. They are not aquatic, and they have chemicals raging in their brains basically telling them to drown themselves. The worm has also eaten a lot of their insides by this point.
The worm isn’t going to drown. Part of its life cycle explicitly involves it manipulating its host to jump into water (often leading to it drowning) so that it can burst out, as seen above, and then ideally find a mate in the same body of water.
this has been known for a long time, each generation has a new video showing them an example like this. its not funny for the grasshopper who keeps volunteering for this. maybe he likes it who knows?
Insects have holes in their body (spiracles) that they use to breathe. At this point the worm has eaten a lot of the insides, so when the water enters the spiracles its getting into the body cavity.
Prayin mantis is not drowning head was never dunked so the liquid has to be a chemical the parasite doesnt like and now the mantis is probably dead considering...
Praying Mantis are not relegated to breathe through their head parts solely, if at all. Many insects I understand breathe through "holes" in their bodies, not exclusively their mouth/head parts.
Its not leaving the mantis cause its drowning, its leaving it because it to lay microscopic eggs that float invisibly on top of the water so that another praying mantis will get more worms once it decides to drink from the water

Classic
Scrolled down not expecting this, wasn't disappointed in the slightest. It's perfect.
Holy shit, that ass is more worm than mantis!

And they wonder where the idea for the Alien movies came from.
Sometimes something derived from reality is the scariest.
Absolutely 💯
The notion behind how xenomorphs procreate is kind of hot, this is just straight up foul

this has been confirmed to be fake and photoshopped, he never said anything like that in the actual, real interview: https://x.com/LumpyTheCook/status/1706659323085041977

A lot of time spent to photoshop a real thing?
I was replying to Tbelles comment, not your post.
Thanks for reading. No offense intended. I try to respond with non AI, non photoshopped content. :)
As far as I can see, it's unconfirmed, meaning that it's up in the air as to whether or not it's true.

Holy fuck that’s so disgusting.
And they said the dildo was too big
It’s too big TODAY. ;)
Real nature is so much worse than sci-fi movies
This is pretty similar to the Alien chest busters or whatever they are called.
But when I watch Alien I know that they're not real. This thing is real... This thing is nightmare fuel. I want it to not exist and I'm willing to employ WMDs on its home planet.
Holy fucking shit. Parasites are the most disgusting creatures in the world
This isn't even the worst of it haha

So it is not drowning as the title implies? It's just horny?
Yes
That's much worse.
So this post can't claim "No Animals Were Harmed" in the making of this video.
More like "One animal was harmed in this video, we didn't do it, though."
Is that precious mantis ok?
This is now my nightmare

Wow - I’ve never seen a praying mantis be murdered before…… not sure how I feel about that….
The mantis was already dead tbh. The mantis was quite literally a shell of itself and the parasite was the life that left that body.
it wasn't? only the rear end was submerged? I don't think that drowns the mantis? They were only drowning the parasite worm?
Apparently they dont breathe from their mouth. Also, I understand once infested by the worm, it is too late. For reference the worm would be pool noodle sized to a human.

If that mantis did survive, it probably felt so much better
The host always dies. They are not aquatic, and they have chemicals raging in their brains basically telling them to drown themselves. The worm has also eaten a lot of their insides by this point.
Awww that’s not right D:

Good luck in that glass of water mate
This reditor is correct, the adults are aquatic. Though they only live a couple weeks

This is why it's important to take baths
If i find out that is inside me please just shoot me lol
Oh yeah horsehair worms are fucking terrifying. Between that and Cordyceps bugs really out here facing resident evil type shit.
So this Mantis is basically dead, just a walking corpse being controlled by the worm?
How does the worm know the mantis is in water?
Insects have holes in their body (spiracles) that they use to breathe. At this point the worm has eaten a lot of the insides, so when the water enters the spiracles its getting into the body cavity.
I’d love to know that too

Does that kill the praying mantis?
Really close to being dead before the waterboarding. The worm thing eats the insides of the poor praying mantis, rip Mantisy.
Buggy must feel so much BETTER!
Nope. Most of it's insides have been eaten. The worm just highjacked it's body to get it to water.
Did the Mantis live after this?
No.
That's sad

Now pour bleach in it.
This kills the (already a zombie) mantis
How tf that parasite even fit inside without outright killing the host? Looks like it should burst out like a xenomorph
This is someone's kink

Well id would hope it would have more breathe holes further up its body but guess not, sucks to be him
I wonder how the worm tastes…🤔
Don’t do it
