They can. They just wouldn't put it on bikes being sent to those states or even not sell that model to the state.
Some companies will cut features entirely if they're illegal in some states if they're a big enough market and it's cheaper to do but it doesn't always make sense to do.
So if it was illegal and I cruise through that state, am I then breaking the law? Something like that would have to be “illegal to sell” I would guess. I asked ChatGPT out of curiosity…
Short answer: No. It’s not illegal in any US state to have cruise control on a motorcycle, nor to use cruise control on a motorcycle, just because it’s cruise control. There are no known state laws banning cruise control specifically on motorcycles in the United States.
It’s not about how strong you grip, it’s just wrist position. After several hours your hand gets tired. Or after you get through stop and go. I wouldn’t own a bike without cruise anymore.
Idk why you got downvoted, americans can be so blind to the dangers of anyone carrying a gun at any given time... shits wild to most of the rest of the world
Truly. It doesn't matter how much research or common sense arguments you lay out before them, it never has or will. "I'm not letting my gun get stolen", "They're not depressed", "I'm a responsible gun owner, but the suggestions around proper storage are insane". Queue the shock when their kid finds that stashed pistol and becomes a statistic.
Of US suicides, 51% were due to firearms. The US has the highest rate of firearm suicides in the world, with 35% of global firearm suicide fatalities but among just 4% of the world’s population
Even owning a gun increases risk of suicide in a household. ( https://publichealth.jhu.edu/center-for-gun-violence-solutions/issues/firearm-suicide ) I’m a massive advocate for gun control and think it should be much harder to actually obtain one, I am also a gun owner that enjoys the historical aspect of a gun. When I bought my first one I should not have been allowed to. End of sentence. I was on meds for depression and a history of suicidal ideation. I told the truth on the application. Nobody even batted an eye and I left in 15 minutes with my brand new (to me) gun. Things have been ok for me but I still look back on that and go “there is no way in hell it should have been that easy”.
Amen to that. I had my life saved by a 3-day waiting period. If I had been in the next county over, no waiting period, and I probably wouldn't be here talking about it.
And americans don't get how guns are treated around the world, they're are dangerous and people are afraid of them. I would be unease in a house of someone that owns a gun. If they bring the gun out im legit leaving the house. In fact, Im 30 years old and I'hve never seen a gun that was not in possession of a police officer or private security.
Firearm advocates do not care about the suicide statistic. Only the somewhat difficult to study violent crimes prevented or number of self defense uses.
Sorry but you not only would have to stop the sale of guns, you'd have to confiscate them all. There are 300 million guns in America already. You will never confiscate any of them. And the more you threaten gun ownership, the more they buy.
Yea mine is just a cruise control clamp and to disengage it you just twist the throttle forward. This guys thing doesn't have that and there's a good chance he panicks in an emergency and crashes.
My old cruise control was a slightly bent handle bar (from a crash). The twist throttle would bind up with it enough that it would hold a setting, but I could always just twist forward to kill throttle, no need for fumbling for a goofy latch.
You can just buy one of things I use for like 10-15 bucks online. Its doesn't work like cars. It's a thing you attach to the throttle and gotta pay attention.
also throttle locks exist, but those are designed so that they can quickly be closed with a bump or small twist back. i use a 3d printed palm flap that doesn’t actually lock the throttle but does reduce the pressure that i need to grip to keep it open, since i have metal in both of my wrists
Throttle locks are a real thing. They clamp down on the throttle and hold it in place. Not whatever this is. Plus you can still turn it while it’s locked. It just kinda stops it from returning to closed.
It isn’t all that useful, I only use it in long highway rides to give my throttle hand a break.
Whilst the fabrication in the video is insane, cruise control on bikes is entirely normal. My S1000r's cruise control is one of the features I use most in daily riding. I can adjust speed up or down with visual feedback and disengage by tapping its button, throttle, clutch or brakes. It's great for keeping constant speed in traffic and a safe follow distance. Whether I use it or not in traffic I'm always covering my front brake to reduce reaction time in the event of an emergency situation.
Your comment is so rhetorical, I'd be interested to know what exactly you believe the issue is with motorcycles having cruise.
I have had 3 different bikes with a cruise controll 2 that were actual electronic and the last was a throttle lock that disengaged if you pulled the front brake.
That’s not cruise control. Cruise control on a bike operates way different and has sensors to auto shut off in emergencies.
This is nothing suicide/murder lock. A wide open throttle that locked open means you can’t stop. There is no sensor to flip the switch and to stop, you have to manually flip the latch.
Let me paint a picture for you. If this was on your bike what would happen if
A Kid runs out in front of you?
A Ball rolls out in front of you?
A Car pulls out in front of you?
Traffic ahead and this engaged?
Whenever something like that happens, you have fractions of a second to respond. Do you really think anyone is going to have time to fumble with this flip latch? Be honest. I HIGHLY doubt the chances of someone succeeding in being able to flip this switch to avoid an accident in an emergency situation.
Secondly, I seriously doubt anyone doing this is smart enough to use it sparingly and in appropriate circumstances. Hopefully no responsible innocent people get hurt and this fool doesn’t earn a Darwin Award.
As someone that has 2 bikes with a cruise control system, nothing, nothing goes wrong.
You also have adaptive cruise control in some modern bikes.
Also the guy doing the butchering on the image is doing it for rage bait because there's a simple clamp system that holds throttle position for normal motorcycles and it exists since the forever people started doing tours on bikes.
This works until you need to slow down and you’re pulling on it and it won’t twist to slow down and you hit the car in front of you and end of flying over the car and the car is unable to stop in time.
I mean flying is safer than driving. Also a good means of transportation. Driving over things is pretty hard too. If it takes him to his destination, maybe flying over can be faster.
its DIY cruise control, handle make engine go vroom, normally handle has to be held, this device slots in and locks in the throttle in a given position
the big problem with it is unlike normal cruise control, this does not go off if you brake
There are a lot of throttle lock type cruise controls that do not maintain a specific speed. They just hold the throttle at a certain opening
They either have a quick release or lightly hold the throttle open so that you can easily throttle down.
The problem with this abomination is that if you flip that piece of metal up to throttle down, it may just drop in the next slot keeping the throttle open.
A couple of popsicle sticks and some rubber bands would be better than this.
The single most stupid "diy" project ive ever seen... if you want to scream out of control like ghost rider into God knows what... this is the hack for you.
What kinda kills me about this is that it does not seem like some slick ragebait click engagement, this seems like a person who's just destroying their own stuff because they've got a Good Idea and What Could Possibly Go Wrong?
As someone who's created my own disasters with my own stuff that way..... Good for him. Good. For. Him.
I say “Why Not?!?” Without geniuses like these
We would never have all those videos of dudes in flip flops doing wheelies with their girl on the back wearing little more than booty shorts and a tube top.
“And without that where does that leave me on a Saturday night with my high speed connection”
P being for Pieces as it will only be a small matter of time especially if he is in 1 of the US states where helmets are not law.
Modifications like this would never pass a UK MOT and the vehicle would be banned from the public roads until the modification has been removed and the bike passed the MOT
I see the 70s are back, although the suicide switches from back then where a little more sophisticated
Gonna add some lead to my Gasoline to get the true 70s experience.
And take off that helmet, safety jeans is all you need!
Cruise control for motorcycles, what could go wrong?
Cruise control actually does exist on motorcycles. But it definitely doesn't work like this
They make throttle kits with cruise control…this definitely belongs here…
They’re still too dangerous for me. They’re illegal in some US states, too.
Harley has been shipping their bikes with throttle locks since at least the 70s.
Yeah, I don’t think they could do that if it was illegal in some states. And it’s not dangerous. Relieves grip on long rides, so I argue it’s safer.
Yeah there was a time I only owned motorcycles and having a throttle-lock for long highway stretches was huge.
They can. They just wouldn't put it on bikes being sent to those states or even not sell that model to the state.
Some companies will cut features entirely if they're illegal in some states if they're a big enough market and it's cheaper to do but it doesn't always make sense to do.

Yeah, I didn't fact check that. Just the concept that a company wouldn't sell something in one state because it's illegal in another.
How hard do you grip an accelerator?
It’s not about how strong you grip, it’s just wrist position. After several hours your hand gets tired. Or after you get through stop and go. I wouldn’t own a bike without cruise anymore.
But guns are legal 😅

Honestly, you were unhealthy enough to try to but a gun to end it all but not so much that you'd drive an extra 20 minutes?
And americans don't get how guns are treated around the world, they're are dangerous and people are afraid of them. I would be unease in a house of someone that owns a gun. Cruise on motorcycles is actually really useful and quite frustrating when it doesn’t work.
As far as safety, the ones I’ve used release simply by pushing the throttle forward. So no less safe imo
Yea mine is just a cruise control clamp and to disengage it you just twist the throttle forward. This guys thing doesn't have that and there's a good chance he panicks in an emergency and crashes.

Cruise out-of-control.
Well, since he drilled right through the cord in the first 2 seconds, not much else can go wrong for this guy for a big
Now its cursed control
Speed 3:
Throttle locks are a real thing. They clamp down on the throttle and hold it in place. Not whatever this is. Plus you can still turn it while it’s locked. It just kinda stops it from returning to closed.

Same. Interstate only use

I agree it's obviously dumb as fuck. But you just pull in the clutch lever in an emergency.
Google Honda Goldwing

Don’t worry, he dremeled right through the cable so he won’t be cruising very long
He put tape on it. Its fine
He did what? That’s a Dewalt drill, bud.
These things are indeed important things. Ain't no Dremel
OK, good. I’m glad I wasn’t the only person who saw that.
That's probably the worst part of this. Dudes gonna have a sticky throttle with or without his mod
It had me at that cable getting busted in the first few seconds
This works until you need to slow down and you’re pulling on it and it won’t twist to slow down and you hit the car in front of you and end of flying over the car and the car is unable to stop in time.
I mean flying is safer than driving. Also a good means of transportation. Driving over things is pretty hard too. If it takes him to his destination, maybe flying over can be faster.
Or you instinctually pull the clutch and redline your engine until it pops
Seeing how he drilled right into the cable is painful
Drilling trough the handlebar was already painfull enough. Good chance it kills you when it snaps.
We came here to be upset
True, lol
That first drill goes righttt through the throttle cable 😂
How to fucking die on a bike 101. 😬
I know it's for a bad cruise control, but it's terrible HOW he does it.
Yeah, it's clearly ragebait but the way he drilled in the cables and cut the housing for no good reason..
I know nothing about motorcycles what does this do 😭
That's the throttle. So basically it's the DIWHY equivalent of putting different sized rocks on your gas pedal.
its DIY cruise control, handle make engine go vroom, normally handle has to be held, this device slots in and locks in the throttle in a given position

Permanent speed.
I think it locks the throttle at a certain speed. Seems dangerous but I don't know for sure.
Going through the break line really hit the spot
Speed control. Lol.
Please post this on r/motorcycles. I'm begging you.
listen to you.
I'm not very good at this
We used to just tighten the the throttle assembly and you had all the cruise you wanted.
Or, you know, a rubber band.
Probably for some stunt, or to ride it into a target building or vehicle.
The best part is when he damages the cable right at the beginning.
Cursed cruise control
The single most stupid "diy" project ive ever seen... if you want to scream out of control like ghost rider into God knows what... this is the hack for you.
What in the name of methamphetamine is this nonsense?
You could just stop watching these type of videos, but then I'd be calling the kettle black, because here I am. Also watching
The essence of “what could possibly go wrong?”
The form factor alone makes this the idea death lever
So much for those turn signal wires.
What kinda kills me about this is that it does not seem like some slick ragebait click engagement, this seems like a person who's just destroying their own stuff because they've got a Good Idea and What Could Possibly Go Wrong?
As someone who's created my own disasters with my own stuff that way..... Good for him. Good. For. Him.
There’s a big black station wagon waiting at the end of the test drive!!
Gotta love that they never even show it working because it obviously doesnt work at all
Next he should cut all the spokes off the wheels
RIP wires
Stupid as Donald T.
He should ride this motorcycle
*handlebar structural integrity has left the chat*
Use a clamp.
he is drilling WAY TOO FUCKING FAST my machinist heart is screaming
The result wasn’t shown. What did he want to achieve? Don’t get it.
I think he DIY'd a stopper to lock the throttle into a certain spot
Which would have convenient if it had worked why? I am afraid I still don’t understand
He achieved making it more dangerous is my guess
This is rage bait, right? That bike is useless after this mod so it was probably dead already.
I say “Why Not?!?” Without geniuses like these We would never have all those videos of dudes in flip flops doing wheelies with their girl on the back wearing little more than booty shorts and a tube top.

Let em have their fun so we can watch. Lol
There are less elaborate ways to depart from this world..
Like my wrist has ever become exhausted by a bike accelerator.
the very first drill through the handle and the throttle cable was enough to send me. lol.

Random speeds: UNLOCKED
Love the cruise control on my motorcycle. It is not this.
Omg he just made a cruise missile...I mean cruise control?
As a motorcyclist I absolutely fuckin hate this.
This is a great way to get bucked
This needs to be on the r/dothemath subreddit so we can see what speeds he set his "cruise control" to.
throttle locks are unnecessary
Crude Control
Porks Workshop, bring your motorcycle and the pig will poop on it.
Bruise control you say?
Mmm yes. How to die at high speed… very nice!

I want to find this man so I can personally say "fuck you" directly to his face.
Different type of lazy
Cruise control bruv
This is throttle lock, not cruise control
he may be able to operate it with bare hands, but would like to see him try with thick padded gloves on. RIP

Cruise control for wheeling at 100 km/h in the highway without having to use the right hand in the correct place.
Yeah, very specific, but this is what happens very often over here.
I teach tool safety for work and everything about that grinder and what he's doing with it makes me nervous.
Dude doesn't appreciate his bike
Looks awkward to set even while motionless. Imagine trying to lock that in place while going 100km/h
🎵dumb ways to die🎵
I had a dirtbike once that had such a sticky throttle that it also had cruise control. On another note ask me how I broke my arm.
They make boly on clamp style throttle locks operated with nothing more than a thumb. Way simpler, and a whole lot safer
You have got to be fucking with me lol
We already have CC on bikes but let's cut the whole bike up so it's a quick death. FFS
Some people shouldn't have tools.
the "rider eliminator 9000"
