• They make controllers with back "paddles" that you can map face buttons to for the same effect. Moving your thumb off the sticks means a split second loss of control over movement/camera. Competitive players use these.

    Lovely homemade version. 10/10

I was thinking of accessibility but also that.

If you're interested in accessible controls, Sony makes a pretty cool setup. They call it the Access controller, and its designed to be completely customisable and adjustable. It's pretty dang neat.

Woah thanks, great price, I am going to try one of these for Microsoft Flight sim

microsofts version is the adaptive controller check which fits your needs better

Originally things like these were designed for accessibility. But then the competitive gamers found out they can use them to optimize their games. Very similar to the pistol grip in modern sport fencing.

Paint the tubes copper, and you get a steampunk edition 😂

Needs some random and unnecessary gears.

Moving his thumbs off those sticks could mean he never finds them again.

Something to note about that - I have a Razr Wolverine and there is no way to customize the button mapping. I don't know that it applies to all of the controllers like that but if you're looking for a new controller and this is something you would want do not buy a Wolverine. I bought it for exactly that reason and was shocked to learn that that's not how it works. As it stands the paddles are mapped to the D-pad and the extra shoulder buttons are like B and Y or something. If you want to change the mapping you have to rely on the game itself to allow remapping but you don't get extra buttons, you just change how they're activated. For example, if I'm playing a racing game I can map my paddles to shift but that just means I now lose function of my D-pad.

If I'm wrong someone please correct me so I can map my extra buttons.

I have one and there's like an app on my Xbox that let's me remap all the buttons. Probably one on PC too but it does remember my button mapping when I play on my computer.

X on the extra right shoulder button next to RT for reloading (in most games) is divine lol

Edit: it's called "Razer controller set up for Xbox" on my Xbox (obviously) gotta be an equivalent for PC set up. I know there's apps like the one that does the colors on my mouse LEDs

I may have explained that poorly. I can change what buttons do what but I can't utilize the extra buttons as buttons independently. So like there are 6 extra buttons on this controller, I'm still restricted to the default 12 (not counting sticks, pause/option) in different configurations instead of having 18 like I thought.

Ohhhh yeah I get you now I thought that at first too and it's a bummer lol. I still really like having the extra buttons, they can be really convenient depending on the game and personal preference but it would be so awesome to just be able to increase overall Controller functionality. Kinda sucks using both a controller and keyboard lol

Yeah huge bummer, I personally haven't ever used the extra buttons because I'm pretty happy with the layout we've landed on for controllers. I just wanted more. It's still a great controller and I really like being able to swap out stick caps but for me the extra buttons have been useless. I use M/K for most things, controller is kinda just there in case I have to drive something that would be inappropriate to use a wheel for. The only thing I exclusively use a controller for is PlateUp! and you only need like two buttons to play that lol

Theres also kits (i have like 2 or 3 from extreme rate) that would take about as much technical skill as this for a way better finish look

Edit kits also usually cover all 4 face buttons and mine can do triggers bumpers and touch pad too

What controllers are these? I'm familiar with the Access, but nothing else with paddles you can map.

Xbox Elite 2 and Playstation DualSense Edge.

Too bad switch games DON'T LET ME REBIND KEYS

I just want to put jump back there on a paddle for ssbu...

It’s amazing what you’ll do when your poor

  • That actually looks great, good job :D
Who munched on your sticks though

Edit: I thought I was on r/functionalprint and you printed it, derp

That just happens to PlayStation controllers eventually

What are you doing to the controller to cause this

Using it the same way I use my Xbox controll, which after using it way more and what longer than I've used any PlayStation controller, shows basically no wear. Yet I've never had a PlayStation controller (across the 3, 4, and 5) that hasn't had the sticks wear out super quickly

You might be pressing really hard or something. My sticks are always still in tact by the time something else breaks with the controller. Even with PS3 which I played the hell out of.

You must have sandpaper thumbs lmao. I have ps4 controllers nearly a decade old with pristine joysticks. This shit is not normal

Just man. Only ever PlayStation controllers that this happens with

I would love to print this. I hate catching fish in subnautica and this would solve the problem entirely

  • I'm not mad about the buttons. It's actually smart. Either gammer accessible or button fatigue for those games where you gotta button mash. But what the fuck is wrong with your thumb sticks........

The hooks dig into your flesh to ensure your thumbs never slip off the stick.

    Blood for the blood god.

Can't have sweaty thumbs if there's no rubber to get warm on, I guess.

  • Increase efficiency, uses previously unused fingers, never get off the aiming. Its a win in my books

    r/DiWHYNOT

also an add for the steam deck

  • I think they get a pass considering they already make controllers with extra triggers that you can just remap

  • How is this a DiWHY? The creator literally told us "why." And it looks well implemented. What's the problem?

  • it's not laziness, it's so you don't have to move your thumb off the right stick (aiming) to press those buttons. (usually jump and reload)

A lot of the fancy competitive controllers have rear paddles you can assign functions to for the exact same reason.

A normal player shouldn't need them, but it's quite popular with e-sports types who want that extra millisecond faster response time.

Reminds me of the competitive Tetris players who tap controllers in a way to maximise their input efficiency. I’m sure somebody would have come up with a similar contraption if the rules did not ban controller mods.

I dont "need" them, but i do like them. I have my controller which I can just remap on the fly. I often change it per game, like mapping one to the jump and one to open doors for instance

  • This is actually a really good accessibility feature for some people with disabilities.

  • It's not about laziness it's about having to use the R joystick and those buttons at the same time.

Tell me you've never had to crab claw a controller before or play any Souls likes without telling me.

  • I have xbox elite gamepad and these configurable back pads saved me from replacing the entire thing after my right bumper broke. Now I just have bumpers at the back and it's like second nature.

This here is a fine solution.

  • But why did you chop off the tops of the analog sticks?

    This is the real question

  • This looks way cooler than a Scuf controller

  • This is too cool to belong here. Items posted here are supposed to be shitty. This thing is both well done, solves a (admittedly niche) problem, and does it in a very similar manor to what actual products can do. If OP actually is the creator of this, you should be proud.

    You're looking for r/redneckengineering They'll love it.

  • This is actually a great accessibility hack, can’t be mad at this at all

  • This is an Amazon product that I also have bought. It's not about being lazy but about not wasting time. If you're playing competitive games and you are poor as fuck and can't afford to buy a pc you get these stuff to help you keep your rank. It's useful even if you have small hands like me and have to do an extra effort to reach those buttons.

Edit: I just noticed those thumbsticks...

  • Second one I’ve seen that’s actually useful

  • That is a surprisingly elegant solution

  • This actually makes a lot of sense. It's not about laziness it's about being able to press buttons while keeping your thumbs on the stick

  • I've seen modification kits to add back buttons to the gamepad.

  • Could have used this for Elden Ring. I beat the game but damn it hurt my hands. Getting old sucks.

  • These are actually useful for a number of reasons. In this case because in a competitive game you don’t want to take your thumb off the stick you use for movement but may need access to the buttons.

Other configurations can be made for gaming with disabilities.

  • This solves the dark souls crab claw epidemic

  • Isn't this just the Xbox elite or switch pro controller?

Yeah, its pretty common now to have back paddles that you can map to whatever input you like.

Not just the pro, or expensive controllers have it. You can pick up some third party controllers that come with it as standard, for less than the official handsets.

  • Are your thumbsticks like that to make R3 L3 easier

  • Just buy an old steam controller at this point

  • What about the other buttons though

  • Triangle and circle

  • Did you design this with a 3D printer? I'd actually love to know how to do this. I have something called De Quervains, so I can't really hit buttons anymore with my thumbs, and this would be perfect.

  • Idk if Sony has made any for the dualsense but the DualShock 4s do have official DualShock paddles. Imean you can only bind a total of 2 buttons but you have access to 3 “profiles”. You can probably buy paddles from control freak or any of those “wanna be a pro cod player” online stores.

  • I had one of these for my Xbox controller and absolutely hated it.

Spent a little money for a controller with paddles and never looked back.

Literally just so I wouldn't have to do the Dark Souls "claw".

  • That's a way to save money not buying the Dualsense Edge

Back paddles are actually nice to have for something like Halo or DOOM where I can keep my fingers on the triggers.

  • You are aware this exists already and doesn’t get in the way of the face buttons?

  • That’s why you learn to press face buttons with an index finger

  • I do experience pain in my wrists, hands/fingers due to EDS, so that's a r/DiWHYNOT for me ! This is really cool.

  • yk what, great diy

  • Utilization of every finger for smooth gameplay

  • That's actually clever.

  • Super idea. Accessibility done well.

  • I have this. It helps me a lot during online match because I can have my thumb on the analog all the time for aiming/camera control.

  • Now this would be smart if they had done the buttons you had to reach farther for, the triangle and the circle. That would’ve been ingenious. But this is just meh.

  • It's a cheap execution (compared to finger paddle in "pro controller), but it works well, so this is not DI-Why... it's a good thing.

  • I learned to use my right index finger in a claw grip to hit the buttons back in the 360 days and I can't change back, middle finger is for the triggers. It's just instinctual now.

  • it's not about being "too lazy" it's about wanting to be able to jump while rotating the camera

  • this is a decent accessibility mod and it looks nice

  • Looks to me like a great disability accessibility device!

  • For some sort of speed gaming I could see this being useful.

Maybe also for someone with some sort of finger disability/issue? I don’t know what but it could help maybe.

  • I need this for GT7. Wouldn’t be a huge improvement but shifting gears would be fun.

  • Diwhy? Cause its either engineer a 50 cent part you can 3d print or shell out nearly 300 bucks for the scuf controller.

  • This one is actually pretty cool!

  • Cool idea but for the time and effort it would take to make this your better off just buying a controller that has paddles/buttons built in. I have the Xbox elite controller and I love it. There's also the scuff controller which I have heard is the better option but I don't own one so I can't say for sure.

  • This is a useful hack.
