That's amazing. I use a lot of tape at my job and loathe peeling up old stuck on stuff. This would be my personal hell.
I usually resort to Isopropyl alcohol but that would wreck a clear coat. Green painters tape would be the only thing I stick on my car but it would look goofy as hell during the day
Depends on the state... In the states that do allow it, you're not allowed to have blue or red lights in the mix (I think also White lights) for obvious reasons
Not sure if it's legal in New York, but people don't give two flying fucks about the red, white, and blue limitations. They have full flags on their trucks made of Christmas lights.
The obviosity was unclear. I am now in prison for impersonating an officer. As if I really wanted to be a guy who goes around officing all the time. Why would anyone ever pretend to office.
Not legal on VA. There's a car that does this around where I am, and ive watched them turn off the lights when there are cops nearby to avoid getting pulled over
not legal here in WI, but i love seeing people do this anyway. takes a lot of time and effort to make it look good and i think it’s an excellent use of free will. i actually have plans to do this to my own car this year, but only turn them on for pics by the lake and then remove them
The result of a country wherein actually being intelligent is considered a flaw. Smart children are beat up. Smart adults are discounted. Intelligence is considered a liability. I seen it coming a long time ago. ;-)
You are allowed to have white and orange facing forward you are allowed to have red and white facing backwards that’s it. No other colors are allowed on your car
I’ve seen several of these. I’m not sure why everyone gets so bent out of shape over them. They’re fun to look at and who cares if they mess up their own car?
I'm more concerned at these flying off and hitting other vehicles. If I wouldn't trust scotch tape to hold Christmas lights on my wall, why would I trust it to hold Christmas lights on a vehicle traveling at 30+ mph? Completely idiotic.
Basic physics. A penny weighs nothing but if you drop one from the top of a major high rise you can still do some serious damage to the ground below because gravity accelerates its speed and it’s had a lot of time to build momentum. A pebble weighs nothing but can still shatter a windshield if the involved vehicles are traveling fast enough on the freeway for similar reasons, especially if the vehicle behind the one that flung the pebble is overtaking the first vehicle. And similarly the force of a string of lights flying at your car at 75+ mph can definitely do some damage. A STEM person could probably explain it better, but yeah a string of lights can screw up a car. And even if the person who got hit had a shitty car—does that mean they deserve to deal with expensive property damage caused by someone else’s negligence?
Very true. Or flying into an open window and seriously injuring someone’s dog who was just having a good time, or a person inside the vehicle. Where I live we had a spate of incidents where someone would drop rocks off an overpass onto cars below, and some of the rocks weren’t very big but a person still suffered a shattered collarbone, and iirc another person went blind in one eye.
These lights aren’t even well secured, hence why folks pointed out the scotch tape, which means not only are they doing something that has the potential to break loose and hurt someone else, but they aren’t even taking the minimal reasonable precautions to try to avoid that happening.
A pebble does damage because glass is both strong and brittle. It won’t shatter your hood, for example.
The penny thing only works in a vacuum. In reality, anything lightweight (or anything at all, really) reaches a terminal velocity where air slows it down balanced with gravity pulling it. A penny dropped from the top of a skyscraper is harmless because of this. Likewise, a lightweight strand of lights has tons of surface area and would immediately be slowed down tremendously.
The risk of getting caught up in the wheels may be more realistic though.
I’m an insurance defense lawyer. Yeah sure that’s what insurance is for, but it depends on the circumstances and the policy. If they are in a shitty car, like the kind you think deserves to have their vehicle trashed, they probably don’t have the best insurance, and they’re probably someone working 2-3 jobs and still barely scraping by. So because that person is poor they deserve to have a financial catastrophe due to someone else’s negligence? Literally this is why lawsuits happen, and I’m telling you this as the asshole defending the negligent person for a living. But go ahead and pop off about things you clearly know very little about idgaf.
Their car. They can do what they please. If they don’t have the covg then sue them directly as you should already know. If they are unable to pay then unlucky. File through your first party carrier under comprehensive coverage, don’t have that? Unlucky.
Don’t like what I have to say then go lobby to make it illegal, so yeah, idgaf.
Except that it’s illegal to do shit like this in the first place. Again, you’re popping about about things about which you’re clearly woefully unqualified.
You remind me of the entitled wealthy clients I’ve had to represent when I worked with high-end carriers like Chubb and CinFin. I would bet money that you’re a luxury car douchebro who regularly drives 20 mph over the limit and when other people crash to avoid your reckless driving you say it’s just bad luck for them.
Every time, the first comment is always something about scratching their car. Like we get it. And it's always as if they're the first person who ever had that realization
It's almost as if it can be nearly guaranteed they will be on there on highways and such, posing a potentially deadly risk to other drivers if these peel off and hit other cars, possibly causing severe accidents from scare reactions. There's a reason shit like this is highly illegal in more developed countries.
Everyone is hating on the car OP posted, but just because it looks like shit in the daytime doesn't mean it won't look awesome at night. And blue painters tape would be pretty inconspicuous at night. But holy crap, painters tape is so expensive, what a waste.
In case people are wondering...yes, the lights are cute and in the spirit....BUT its the scotch tape that is the issue. Its freaking impossible to get off the clear coat. The tape just tears and "fractures". As me how I know, and my situation only involved 4-5 strips of clear tape. Painters tape is doing it correct.
I live in DFW Texas and there's a pickup truck like this, except the adhesive is black duct tape. It seems like it would be a gummed up nightmare to peel off. I'm sure it looks neat at night though.
I saw a Facebook post from a Georgia county officer giving someone a ticket for something like this. They were trying to make the community aware. All the comments were annoyed and said the officers should have something better to do.
Given what I've seen done by some tic tac idjiots I'm honestly surprised they didn't use hot glue to attach the lights. It's almost impressive, almost.
A local car club does their cars up like this and then has a holiday parade in front of the children's hospital where they also drop off donated toys. Pretty fun.
Driving to work this morning and saw this same thing. Thought it was a bad paint job, or a crappy barbwire design all over the car. As I got closer I realized it was this. Some idiots must be copying a DIY TikTok video or something.
First time I seen a car like this. Our community does a whole light parade every year with the off road vehicles it's very nice. But this is a first randomly on grand ave had to do a double take.
The scotch tape is a trick these people use to spare the exterior clear coat or paint from being scratched by the glass tips of the small lights. A standard string of xmas lights believe it or not are still small incandescent bulbs with glass tips, a lot are now LED but some are still the old style way.
I asked someone in a parking lot one time what was up with the tape and they basically told me if they didn't tape them down they would scratch the paint to the point it looks like the car was driven thru a brush thicket for 50 miles.
You’re not even allowed neon under lights here 🤷♂️ it’s a safety thing, they had data proving the lights are unsafe on the local news. I don’t think it’s just because they’re grumpy lol
You hate LED not-high beams? Well trust me those will feel like a gentle eye wash after this motorised disaster waiting to happen will feel like rubbing glass shards in your eyes whilst also operating a motorised metal tonne tomb. Good luck to everyone this person share a road with.may the odds be in your favour.
They’re gonna scratch the fuck out of that clear coat.
I remember seeing the results of this when it went viral before.
That's amazing. I use a lot of tape at my job and loathe peeling up old stuck on stuff. This would be my personal hell.
I usually resort to Isopropyl alcohol but that would wreck a clear coat. Green painters tape would be the only thing I stick on my car but it would look goofy as hell during the day
I almost feel bad for laughing at the sobbing.
I seen a guy in my town do the same thing, and I gotta ask, is it even legal?
Depends on the state... In the states that do allow it, you're not allowed to have blue or red lights in the mix (I think also White lights) for obvious reasons
Not sure if it's legal in New York, but people don't give two flying fucks about the red, white, and blue limitations. They have full flags on their trucks made of Christmas lights.
Lmao
It is not.
The obviosity was unclear. I am now in prison for impersonating an officer. As if I really wanted to be a guy who goes around officing all the time. Why would anyone ever pretend to office.
Depends on the state. I grew up in Ohio, blue LEDs were legal.
Do towns even exist outside of the USA? 🤔
Only in America 🤣
Not in FL. But the local PD let a Trolly have them...hypocrites if you ask me.
Probably not legal to have them on while driving in most of the world
Well they have a thin blue line flag on their car so they must be law abiding citizens
Not legal on VA. There's a car that does this around where I am, and ive watched them turn off the lights when there are cops nearby to avoid getting pulled over
I also saw someone that did this. It looks cool at night lol
not legal here in WI, but i love seeing people do this anyway. takes a lot of time and effort to make it look good and i think it’s an excellent use of free will. i actually have plans to do this to my own car this year, but only turn them on for pics by the lake and then remove them
NE WI? I want to see that!
SE :(
Here's a link to this year's parade. There is a car made upto look like a train using Christmas lights.

*saw. Where is this infatuation with seen coming from ?
The result of a country wherein actually being intelligent is considered a flaw. Smart children are beat up. Smart adults are discounted. Intelligence is considered a liability. I seen it coming a long time ago. ;-)
Omg me too!! I was behind them in line at 7 brew the other morning like wtf I am not caffeinated enough for this.
If you have it in your driveway, it is, but if it is driving, you should have them off
You are allowed to have white and orange facing forward you are allowed to have red and white facing backwards that’s it. No other colors are allowed on your car
Doesn't seem legal. Even if it is does insurance cover problems caused by lights flying off your vehicle on a highway?
Just saw a fb post from a local PD pulling someone over in one of these, saying it’s neat but please don’t
It’s okay, he has blue lives matter stickers.
If you have a "thin blue line" flag on your car, it is
I've seen a few of these cars around me. They look pretty cool at night, obviously daytime is working against them.
Apparently OP is allergic to the Christmas spirit! /jk
Some people do stuff like that to take part in a Christmas parade; meaning 1 night, at slow speed, and then remove it.
I wouldn't want to see that at highway speed, but it's fine for a parade.
Are you expecting a person with a thin blue line sticker to think things through?
That was festive. For a minute
Tape has been holding my front bumper for month now. I'm not worried about a few string light.
Different Story, since wind and such will press the front bumper against your car, while the wind will tear on the light strings.
Yea but I highly doubt it’s scotch tape. Probably duct tape or some other kind of tape that lasts longer than 2 seconds.
If your car is damaged by a light string it was a piece of shit anyway… it weighs nothing….
Basic physics. A penny weighs nothing but if you drop one from the top of a major high rise you can still do some serious damage to the ground below because gravity accelerates its speed and it’s had a lot of time to build momentum. A STEM person could probably explain it better, but yeah a string of lights can screw up a car. And even if the person who got hit had a shitty car—does that mean they deserve to deal with expensive property damage caused by someone else’s negligence?
Or something not even cosmetic, like a string falling off, getting caught up in someone's undercarriage, and wrapping around something mechanical.

TIL. Good to know, because I’m the douchebag usually defending the negligent driver.
And that’s what insurance is for, same as an unsecured payload. But go on downvote me again idgaf
I’m an insurance defense lawyer. Yeah sure that’s what insurance is for, but it depends on the circumstances and the policy. So you’re mad it’s not enforced then, since it’s apparently illegal.
Yeah, a string of lights flying off of a car totally won't distract other drivers and cause an accident...
What if argument, keys no e rtrd
Did you have a stroke?
Are you missing chromosomes?
Every time, the first comment is always something about scratching their car. Like we get it. And it's always as if they're the first person who ever had that realization

I snort laughed. Well played Sir.
There is also the problem that you can't see where the car is going when everything is the same color.
It gets worse when those drivers use blue or red, confusing everyone on the road.
Clark Griswold style
Drumroll please
Lhlhlhlhlhlhllhllhlhl
I always wondered how they plug them in or get them to light up? Those look like normal house Christmas lights
Either they are 5v... Plenty out there or they are running an inverter. Both pretty easy with low draw LEDs.
My car has an outlet in it and you can get an adapter for a cigarette lighter.
Blue line flag, makes sense
Car’s gunna be scratched to hell if it isn’t already
Totally thought that was a big Mr.Hankey in the yard behind
Saw a car just like this yesterday, but it was blue painters tape holding the christmas lights to it. Had to just shake my head at it.
Everyone is hating on the car OP posted, but just because it looks like shit in the daytime doesn't mean it won't look awesome at night. And blue painters tape would be pretty inconspicuous at night. But holy crap, painters tape is so expensive, what a waste.
I saw one with lime green painters tape. I too had shaken my head.
the green tape might be automotive masking tape (which is safest for the cars paint) and if so, that driver knew what they were doing
Na its frog tape almost guranteed
Cars going to be scratched up, but that's pretty cool ngl
In case people are wondering...yes, the lights are cute and in the spirit....BUT its the scotch tape that is the issue. Its freaking impossible to get off the clear coat. The tape just tears and "fractures". As me how I know, and my situation only involved 4-5 strips of clear tape. Painters tape is doing it correct.
Don't forget about the lights rubbing on the clear coat, too.
I thought it was invisible” tape
That tape is going to SUUUUCK to take off after baking in the sun - good luck!
Not shocked the thin blue line doesn’t have class.
Always the least intelligent too
Is that a challenger? wtf???
Not for long
It must be a trend, I have never seen anything like this before, and now maybe close to a dozen this season.
It's all a little crazy, but I get it. A silly light up car is kind of fun. The Scotch tape seems like it's going to be a problem though.
i mean it probably looks alright in the dark at least. like. pitch, pitch black dark. moonless night in the sahara dark. yeah.
Hey, its fun and festive lol. I did a simpler version on my car this year for funsies and I did indeed use scotch tape
Any regrets?
Hasnt fallen off and havent gotten pulled over. Im sure Ill have some regret when its time to take all the tape off though😅
First time you've seen this? There's so many people doin this
A cop would
Given what I've seen done by some tic tac idjiots I'm honestly surprised they didn't use hot glue to attach the lights. It's almost impressive, almost.
I need to see it at night!
I saw this two nights ago around where I live. Can’t be legal.
That’s going to be a joy to remove 😆
Those lights definitely scream “holiday spirit” and “don’t ask questions” at the same time.
the sticker is just the cherry on top
I’mma be for real, I thought it was a car covered in barbed wire
I saw like 5 cars doing this separately last December
A local car club does their cars up like this and then has a holiday parade in front of the children's hospital where they also drop off donated toys. Pretty fun.
it’s cool as hell
That's an accident waiting to happen :/
I just saw a truck just like this, but they used blue painter's tape instead of scotch 😂
I feel like this must be some type of TikTok trend atm?
This was a tend last year and I remember seeing everyone regret it in the new year when all their paint peeled off 🤦♀️what did you think would happen
ETA: have driven next to these, it is extremely unpleasant
Driving to work this morning and saw this same thing. Thought it was a bad paint job, or a crappy barbwire design all over the car. As I got closer I realized it was this. Some idiots must be copying a DIY TikTok video or something.
Saw someone in AZ like this yesterday, WTF are we doing???
If you saw in az recently they are probalbly a part of the annual light parade.
First time I seen a car like this. Our community does a whole light parade every year with the off road vehicles it's very nice. But this is a first randomly on grand ave had to do a double take.
They have their thin blue line flag so that will at least help smooth things over with the cops during their first traffic stop.
You sure?
What state?
California
You're pretty sure?
What gave it away?
Looks so cool at night tho bro /s
🤣👍
I've seen multiple cars with this on them, but they were using blue carpenter's tape. Looked ridiculous.
LOL, I live in the UK and saw one exactly like this about a week ago, but it was a white car with black wire for the lights.
Just pretty sure, huh?
The scotch tape is a trick these people use to spare the exterior clear coat or paint from being scratched by the glass tips of the small lights. A standard string of xmas lights believe it or not are still small incandescent bulbs with glass tips, a lot are now LED but some are still the old style way.
I asked someone in a parking lot one time what was up with the tape and they basically told me if they didn't tape them down they would scratch the paint to the point it looks like the car was driven thru a brush thicket for 50 miles.
Thought it was barbed wire at first
You can use Washi tape for this, and it's better (not perfect) for the paint.
Cello tape is horrible for this.
LOL, You are pretty sure that's what it is? Which part are you confused about?
eww not the pro-cop flag 🤮
Guy in TN has this setup but used painters tape so in the day you can see the millions of blue strips
They're so straight and well done for such shoddy work.
I've seen three of those over the weekend, wtf is going on?
They’re Christmas lights. They look great after dark.
OP is a genius
My city just banned these this year lol. I don’t think the state has a ban yet. But there’s a city ordinance now
Pretty dumb trend
Banning this is dumb. No room for whimsy left in this world
You’re not even allowed neon under lights here 🤷♂️ it’s a safety thing, they had data proving the lights are unsafe on the local news. I don’t think it’s just because they’re grumpy lol
god forbid somebody try to spread some christmas cheer 🙄🙄🙄🙄 nah these do look cool at night tho ngl lol.
I love this.
There was a truck in one of our local Christmas parade that did that same thing, but he used blue painters tape. It looked horrible.
It would illegal here in Texas but I don't know how much they enforce it.
It’s only illegal if it’s red and blue
Pretty sure we dont care
Why are you here then…?
Ok now I gotta see it at night.
They are tiny Christmas lights. Calm down. They look very cool at night lol
