I think there was some novels that were prequels to DMC3; but they were retconned when 5 came out, if I recall. But honestly, this is something I love about DMC: little hints to an extended universe that are never really explained in the main story that let us, the players, fill in the gaps with our imagination.
It in the dmc3 manga you can find it easily to read for free. There were 3 volumes but the 3rd was never released publicly sadly. I believe the specific interaction Dante mentions here happens in the 2nd volume
I know there is a prequel where they show that encounter but as a child I had no idea and I loved the implication of this line. At first I was confused and thought it referred to the intro of the game. But when I understood that was supposed to be a flashforward of their fight, I just began imagining these guys keep running into each other to fight again and again, which is funny because that's kinda the way their relationship developed in DMC5.

It's referring to the dmc 3 prequel manga
I remember when people genuinely thought they referring to DmC with that one lol
Didn't know it existed
Yeah there were only 2 issues and they didn't really add a lot
They're pretty neat though
It’s not finished since the 3rd part never came out. It’s where the White Rabbit came from though

They fought one year ago in the prequel manga, Dante got his ass kicked

It's in the DMC3 prequel manga that either sucks complete ass, or doesn't have a single good translation.
