Maybe, a bit off topic, but considering we spend 6+ hours a day with our hands on them there's bound to be some people here who have found a gem or two.
I've been rocking an MX Master 3 for about a year now and it's in such an absolutely disgusting state. The rubber where any of your palm or fingers rest has bubbled and is peeling away.
There's some sort of white crystaline deposit, i'm guessing salt from my sweat. Any any attempts to clean it with anything just causes more damage.
I've had keyboards that last 10+ years. But can't find a mouse that lasts any length of time.
Please help.
Wash your hands, don’t eat at your desk
This, for many years I lived at my desk and often would have lunch whilst working.
COVID hit and I made a rule that always clean hands when touching my knees/mouse
My keychron and logi mouse has pretty much been around for 5 years now and they don't have a hint of discolouration
Knees?
You don’t do a round of head shoulder knees and toes on your break?
Goddamn that's a fail of a typo lol meant to be keyboard
ive never seen this, maybe you have acidic sweat or something haha. if keyboards are fine surely just get a plastic mouse instead of rubber
Eh, this won't happen if you clean your mouse and keyboard regularly. You shouldn't be waiting until it looks absolutely disgusting. lol.
I have a mouse that is 4-5 years old and it's clean as a whistle because I keep it that way. And when I'm not using it, it goes back in it's little cloth bag. The one on my desktop is about 1 year old. Again, I keep it clean.
Wipes are your friend, same as what another poster said there.
The thing is is that I do clean it regularly. I've tried everything from Isopropyl alcohol, to plain water + soap.
They always go manky after a year.
Those white patches disappear during the cleaning, but mostly come back once the mouse has fully dried.
Isopropyl will eat the rubber coating. Maybe that’s your problem.
Quite possibly. I know vinegar isn't good for rubber, but didn't realize IPA isn't.
Fonrubberised finished be very careful with what you use. Avoid anything harsh as it will more often then not ruin the finish.
Also as someone said, don’t eat while using it, the rubber will almost absorb the oils, or sure if it absorbs but it will ruin it.
I have an mx master for like 5 years and the only wear is some mild wear at the most used points
Poor choices for cleaning. But a lot of the mx master 3's are known for going to shit too.
Mine is the same.
I laughed as soon as I read this. If only there was easy access to information where one could search how to clean rubber without damaging it.
Isopropyl alcohol will dry the rubber out stripping the material of its natural oils.
I've had an MX master 3 for 4/5 years. Use it 5 days a week for work, never cleaned it, the rubber is slightly dirty near the thumb rest, but otherwise it's still clean.
Not sure why you were downvoted.. I have the same thing. Took me 3 mins to clean just there. Do be another 3 years.
I’ve had mine for 5 years, never cleaned it and it’s not dirty.
Same, full time use of the same mouse for about 6 years and nothing out of the ordinary for a mouse that gets used that much
I had the original MX Master for about 10 years until it finally died last year, and it was still in perfect condition other than scratches from rattling around in my bag with other items.
I think, no offense, that personal hygiene is the most important part here and if you do have some medical situation that makes it particularly unavoidable, then you need to start cleaning your peripherals weekly.
I feel very good about my personal hygiene right about now

Not bad… not great… think I’ll go get a wet wipe. Had it 3 years and haven’t cleaned it yet.

Sorted until 2029
I was definitely not expecting to see a live mouse cleaning on Reddit today
This is the way. lol.
G905 wireless... and clean it now and again....
It's a common problem with the MX Master 3's, the rubber just disintegrates for whatever reason. I found a Keychron M6 at RRP and decided to take a chance. Basically the same ergonomics (heavily inspired, one might say), at a fraction of the price.
No major issues, although I'm not really used to this style of mouse. Also the scroll wheels are a bit iffy, sometimes miss an actuation so not great for precision. If the opportunity arose, I'd buy a G502 X LIGHTSPEED without hesitation, having used a G502 for many years before the switches gave out (newer ones are optical, should last longer).
Keychron mice are good. I replaced a cheap amazon mouse that served me well for years with the Keychron M7 as I needed a way to switch between two machines (Bluetooth + 2.4ghz switch underneath it). I'm not an expert on mice but I can't fault it on its functionality, appearance, weight and price
Clean it and wash your hands more often. Those anti septic / alcohol tissues we used in covid are a good shout
I have razer basilisk x hyper speed for 5 years now - which i got refurbished!
It’s all plastic but I do wash my hands regularly - so ymmv!
Wait, you have crystallised sweat you can actually see? Mate, not sure what's up with yo hands but please see a doctor.... that ain't right.
I worked at a helpdesk in my younger years and hardware was my bag back then. Never, never ever, have I seen a used mouse as you describe.
I have had a g pro wireless for around 3 years now and love it (no issues like double clicking that some people report). Great battery life, and most importantly it is so plain it doesn't look like a gamer-y mouse.
Wash your hands more often, been rocking mx master then mx master 2 for 5yrs + each and they not that bad. Clean them once in a while.
I've been using Logitech MX 3 for over 4 years now and it's spotless. The mouse isn't a problem here.
I’ve had an MX Ergo since 2019, it’s perfect only gripe is it’s micro usb to charge but that’s its age. Wash your hands regularly and clean your equipment and they’ll last
My mice are spotless. I wouldn't consider myself a neat freak at all, but I think the secret is not eating at my desk and always clean and dry my hands thoroughly after meals. I don't clean my mouse per se, but if I notice some gunk, I'll wipe it off.
I think there's a genetic element too, I don't tend to have oily or sweaty hands. I used to be a gamer, and some players would have to change their mouse annually, due to sweat and oil destroying the mouse, mine were still like new 5 years later.
Wow, so many people saying you're the problem and not the mouse. Such a toxic industry, quick to blame a colleague.
Logitech just sucks, when I used MX Master I had to wipe it every day to keep it clean. Even then the logo and rubber wore off after 6-12 months.
Switched to Razer and they easily last 3 years like new.
I'm using a cheap 2 euro gaming Bluetooth mouse from Ali express bought 7 years ago. Still works great. I avoid food on my desk. And wipe it almost every day. Used the mouse all around the world on my trips.
No more MX masters for me. 3 years back Switched to G502 Hero wired and never looked back.
