Hi all,

I’m a computing science student in Ireland (stage 3) and I’m required to complete an internship as part of my degree. I’ve applied to quite a lot of companies but have mostly received rejections, and I’m starting to worry.

I’d really appreciate advice from people working in Ireland on: - where to look for internships (companies, websites, recruiters) - whether smaller/local companies are more open to interns - what kind of projects actually help on a CV here - if this level of rejection is normal at this stage

For context, I have academic projects but no industry experience yet.

Thanks a lot!

  • Is your college helping you at all? It could also be that something is off on your CV, feel free to take out and personal info and lash it in here for us to take a look.

  • The main things companies need to know are (1) the dates you're available, (2) whether the internship has to be paid, and (3) what the college expects the company to provide.

A lot of small firms are hesitant because hiring someone for a fixed short period is a real cost - onboarding, mentoring, and insurance all take time away from billable work. In the past they'd do it because there was a chance you'd stay on afterwards, but with the job market so tight now the economics don't always make sense for them.

That said, keep applying - smaller companies will still take interns if the requirements are straightforward.
