    Previous design: Refused to provide pavement where people desire it.
    Current design: Provides pavement where people desire it.

    Paths are the one everyday thing where literally everyone can easily study the completely unnecessary conflict between what designers think is important and what the users actually care about.

  • Couldn't people just step over the corners?

    Most people don't care about that sort of detail. It's not like YOU stepping on grass one time is enough to kill it. But a thousand 'you's' and you get a desire path.
