Touch screens are only used everywhere bc they're actually cheaper to make than a physical dash. Probably more distracting for the driver but manufacturers will always manufacture the cheapest option they can get away with ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
yeah it would. you may have to tilt your wrist towards you which is perfectly doable while driving. and half of the time people drive with one hand on the wheel and the other one on the drive stick.
It is no longer recommended to keep your hands at 9 and 3. More like 4 and 8. Keeping your arms lower means they'll bend down and away from your body and your hands won't fling into your face in case of an accident and the airbag goes off
Even then the angle and distance between you and the screen would change during the stroke. Usually stuff like this is just mounted on the boat right. Hell boats with winged riggers have a convenient mounting point right in front of your face.
I would never use this - but I used to have a tiller-steered flats skiff (a little fishing boat for shallow water that you steer by manually moving the motor) & I could see this having utility for keeping an eye on RPM & motor temperature.
That sub is ridiculous. I understand having the tv too high can cause neck problems, but those people freak out unless the tv is basically on the floor.
If you place the watch next to your hand in front of the wrist bone, the crown will dig into the back of your hand and you will not be able to freely move your wrists. Objectively speaking, the handwatch position is SO MUCH more uncomfortable.
Aesthetics is the only possible argument you could make (I think it looks super goofy though), but it's a fact that you restrict your movement by placing a watch in front of the wrist bone.
Personally the tightness of the wrist position is far less comfortable than a sliding watch. You lose a lot when the watch is fixed in place behind the wrist
I agree is looks better but If I wear my watch that way I can’t see it past my sleeves and if I wear it right enough to stay that way it cuts off the circulation to my arm and I’ll end up being sore from my wrist to my shoulder.
That's why we have the classy act of pushing your sleeve back to see your watch ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
And how tight do you wear your watch anyway ? It can totally stay on your arm without having to squeeze your arm like a belt. Just wear it very loosely over your wrist, then push it back until it fits.
I can't figure it out either, but the guy who designed the contraption in this main post is in that sub. Ninja edit, maybe different designer but similar concept
The conversation is entertaining, particularly when he starts posting pics of his other designs
Always somebody that wants to shit on someone else. Some of you have nothing but contempt inside.
I worked in appliance repair for awhile, and found I couldn't wear a wristwatch--the watch would catch when I needed to reach into a narrow part of an appliance. I love wearing a watch, but couldn't. The design in picture might solve that, hard to say how it would contort when the hand is manipulated; granted, I still wouldn't have worn it, given the amount of water a technician interacts with, but it's innovative. I don't think it's a crazy idea, for a profession with similar needs and less water exposure.
It's be great for something where your hands are constantly occupied like driving or cycling. Would not be good for your example since wrapping things around your hand isn't going to help you reach in to crevices.
It is for the cross country phase of 3 day eventing. You have to make a certain time over a long open jumping course. Too fast gets you penalties, too slow gets penalties. The watch would let you check your time and possibly waypoints while holding the reins at a gallop.
May even connect to an equine HR monitoring device.
You can see it while holding reins and keeping your hands at the proper position. Maybe for timing? Idk. Equestrians have been doing it without this since the dawn of horse girls so idk how necessary it is.
Well, basketball used to be played in Converse shoes.
You can obviously ride a horse without these watches, but it stands to reason that they might give a significant advantage in certain types of competitions
Maybe it's specifically for competitions, like show jumping where it could show you how you're doing on time? Somewhere under pressure where every second matters.
Because if you're riding regularly, it takes no effort to twist your hand and check your wrist. Heck, grabbing your phone on a leasure ride is easy enough.
I could see that. I might be paranoid, but all I'm thinking is....
So after you wipe your butt touch your watch and then take it off and put it on the sink while you wash your hands and then put your poop particle watch back on. No thank you. Seems like an unnecessary step that makes it unhygienic.
I definitely wash my watch every now and then though. Part of washing my hands. So you've got something there.
I’m guessing you slip your thumb out of it- just like you do when you wear a cycling jacket or hoodie that has thumb holes. The design is awesome for riding.
Hands need to be free to articulate and perform. A ring is as far as I can go. This is just a cool looking pain in the balls. Get back in the wrist where you aren’t in the way.
I can see a watch sitting in this spot being useful for quite a few athletic and sporting activities, what I want to know is do all the functions of the watch still work when placed here. Especially the heart rate function.
This is a great design that allows for increased watch visibility/utility while driving, horse riding, rowing, or doing many other sports. Two issues I see here are: increased palm sweatiness, and the exorbitant price. This thing was like $300 the last time I checked.
Turns out it’s an ErgonBand, designed to be ergonomic for sports and everyday use. It kinda makes sense in a way—you don’t have to rotate your wrist to see the watch face, and it keeps in contact with your skin to for the heart rate sensors. Seems kinda interesting. I’d be willing to try it out. Kinda pricey though. I’m not sure it’s worth the advertised or discounted price.
It’s clearly not design design. It’s a functional and fashion choice. It looks silly. But the design serves a purpose that a normal watch strap doesn’t. It does feel a little like it’s taking inspiration from the harnesses that Virgil Abloh did pre pandemic.
Hard to use a watch on your wrist when wearing proper warm clothes with long sleeves. This is useful for going out. I just wouldn't want to wear it when inside.
If it’s that cold that you’re wearing multiple or thicker layers, gloves are more likely though. Better solution is clothes that aren’t tight in the wrist.
I like this. Looks like it might work for a lot of folks with limited hand mobility. Putting on a regular watch is hard - this looks like it fits more like a glove.
Also much more ergonomic for smart watches you spend more time on, more similar to smartphone use.
I would probably wear my watch like this if I had a office job. I typically wear my watch on the inside of my right hand, so I can't really use a mouse easily with it on like that.
I am a scuba diver and want this so bad for my dive watch. Unlike a regular watch, I’m not just checking it once every few hours, but rather at least once a minute, or sometimes holding it constantly in front of me for ascent/descent. This would be way more comfortable
I dunno, I kinda like it. I'm a huge fan of shit that looks stupid. Reaching into my pocket with a normal watch or a ring on is already a challenge. Hook my emotional support leatherman on that pocket and I'm fishing for my keys with my fingers anyways.
Oh hey! Something I actually own. When I did IT work, one of the other technicians convinced me to give it a try. I enjoyed the change in style (especially for a fallout pipboy face) but unfortunately in practice, the quick release buttons would eh . . .quickly release if you squeezed your hand together. Check out their official website if you’re curious.
I feel like this is obviously for some specific use case where you need to see info on your watch but you also can’t move your hands from whatever you’re doing.
Driving might be one case. Some sort of industrial machine operation might be another.
The positioning vaguely resembles where divers have instruments and compasses and the like, but I assume this is just like a weird steampunk thing, or it's a little easier to operate the touch screen in that position (more stable base, less prone to randomly rotating etc), but that's what this sub has become, right? This must have a very specific use, like rowing or some shenanigan.
I guess driving, it would be at kind of the right angle and facing you.
sounds dangerous
I mean they keep switching dashboard shit out with touch screens. Doesnt make you less right though.
Touch screens are only used everywhere bc they're actually cheaper to make than a physical dash. Probably more distracting for the driver but manufacturers will always manufacture the cheapest option they can get away with ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Half my reason for wanting to learn to work on cars is because I'm tired of this shit and I just want something reliable and simple.
Probably safer than trying to change the A/C in most new cars
If only basically every vehicle already had a clock in it.
And every phone... Making watches redundant for a every day tool. Its just fashion
Guess a watch tells you the time without stealing hours of your time or destroying your social skills.
Unless its a smart watch
If there’s a way to install TikTok on this thing, it would make commutes so fun!
Definitely for driving, I’ve seen similar period timepieces made for that purpose in this way
I could see this used by cyclers or something like that, too.
Cycling
To can ensure every ray of sunlight is perfectly reflected onto your retina.
No it would not face you if you drive correctly with your hand at 9 and 3
yeah it would. you may have to tilt your wrist towards you which is perfectly doable while driving. and half of the time people drive with one hand on the wheel and the other one on the drive stick.
It is no longer recommended to keep your hands at 9 and 3. More like 4 and 8. Keeping your arms lower means they'll bend down and away from your body and your hands won't fling into your face in case of an accident and the airbag goes off
I drive at midnight and 6
I drive at June and 2017.
Looks like his thumb is wearing sexy lingerie.
Right? Especially that quick release snap button.
in rowing on the wrist would be better. you have to turn the oar in your hands and it would scrape against the screen
So the shenanigan remains anonymous.
Even then the angle and distance between you and the screen would change during the stroke. Usually stuff like this is just mounted on the boat right. Hell boats with winged riggers have a convenient mounting point right in front of your face.
I used to just strap my watch around the oar itself right next to the handle lol
It’s for advanced fingering
I was thinking that, I can see how it might be more practical in certain situations. I don't know what they are, but I'm sure they exist!
"rowing"
That's a Wanklex chronograph.
It sure is.
What I do in my private time is between me and god.
If it’s angled right I would love this over fucking up set
I would never use this - but I used to have a tiller-steered flats skiff (a little fishing boat for shallow water that you steer by manually moving the motor) & I could see this having utility for keeping an eye on RPM & motor temperature.
Or long distance road biking? For navigation
Bike riding, maybe?
I saw an ad for this the other day and the person was riding a horse
This is for people suffering from carpal tunnels and still wanting to wear a watch.
That placement is also uniquely good for measuring vitals as the skin there is often the thinnest - similar to the underside of your wrist.
I can't figure it out either. The screen's too small for porn.
Guitarists?
Would also be easier to see when using a computer but that seems incredibly inefficient lol
Drip
Big nope for rowing
Not rowing, but it does count strokes.
r/HandWatch in the wild
O just checked he sub out and looked through the community section; still not sure what the sub is about
The correct way to wear a watch is above the wrist bone. If you wear your watch too low it touches your hand, then you have a Hand Watch.
Wow they care way too fucking much about when they see someone else wearing a "handwatch".
/r/tvtoohigh
This is a considerable ergonomic issue though
i mean so is a handwatch. have you seen some of these pictures?
Oh yeah I don't mean to downplay any of both. I can feel the small bump on the side of those watches digging into my hand
Yet also having no effect on you.
The “ruined aesthetic” is apparently painful to some people?
I think it says waaaay more about them than it does about the people they think they are mocking.
(I can feel the angry downvotes already and they bring me joy)
You’re doing your fair share of projecting there bud.
Well, it is amusing and fun to point and laugh. It's not like anyone in that sub is going out of their way to get randos to fix their TVs
Yeaaaaahh that's definitely not what we do on that sub lol
None of those fuckers own a comfy recliner.

well, sometimes it looks really goofy, when the crown looks like it wants to stab your hand
Right??? I also assume half of these are people that never wear long sleeves either.
Idgaf about watches but it does look worse when it’s too high up.
But it is incredibly uncomfortable and weird looking to do it the "correct" way.
That's how most people see handwatches.
I'll stick with my wristwatch rather than an armwatch.
If you place the watch next to your hand in front of the wrist bone, the crown will dig into the back of your hand and you will not be able to freely move your wrists. Objectively speaking, the handwatch position is SO MUCH more uncomfortable.

Personally the tightness of the wrist position is far less comfortable than a sliding watch. You lose a lot when the watch is fixed in place behind the wrist
It just slides back out of the way if you don't have it absurdly tight ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I used to be on all kinds of subs meant for just whining about stuff. I've moved away from most of them because they left me uselessly whiny.
This is one of the few I still follow. Because sometimes, there's something fun and weird instead.
But that one is one of the most pointless ones I've ever seen.

This post should clear it up. First time there. That's a funny fucking topic.
Reddit is too specific sometimes
Why cant people just leave other people alone
Imaging moderating this, every day you let the anger of people wearing their watches in a way you dont like fester into your mind further and further
Looks interesting the first seconds, but efter two or three, you realize it's just stupid.
I only need 0.2 seconds to realise it's stupid.
I feel like it would work better on a glove…. At a different angle.
After 2 or 3 seconds of reading these comments, I realize that most redditors are needlessly contrarian.
No, we're not!
Right? This looks dope af, I don’t care if it’s less useable
It took you that long?

I went to have my colon checked and that’s how I got to own a rolex
It could very well be good for certain situations, but generally, no.
You could say the same about a screwdriver. Give it up.
Apparently it is a special horse riding accessories. If someone ride horses here maybe they can explain why this would be interesting

My first thought is that it might be easier to check at this angle if your hands are occupied with some activity like climbing maybe.
Any watch (especially this watch) would get destroyed climbing.
thats the ultra, itd be fine.
Yea, because they're using a sapphire ^ And there will never be quartz stone in some climbing routes /s 🥀
Would work well for weight lifting, my Apple Watch gets in my way whenever I’m doing forearms curls
what about just taking them off
bc people record workouts stats through their watches
And washing your hands
it seems waterproof.
How do you wash your hand under the watch tho 🙄
Overall it's impractical but I'm pretty sure you would survive without washing the 2x2 square of skin that's been covered by the watch anyways.
Or you could just take it off, like a lot of people do with their watches anyway.
I could see that. I might be paranoid, but all I'm thinking is....

People have been taking their watches off to wash their hands since wrist watches were invented. Take it off pre-poop if you're that paranoid 😂
.
You’d probably take it off💀

ugh unfortunately i love this

I genuinely do not understand the hate for it in the comments it's kind of a cool alternative
I wash my hands too often to ever even consider such a thing.
I want a watch that is as distracting as possible. For my right hand, no less.

Oh so a watch but less convenient lol

I personally prefer the crotch watch
No.
Ah yes. I can now see how many miles deep I'm Into my nightly porn run.
Whoever designed this doesn't wash their hands enough
I don't hate it? If I'm wearing long sleeves, I kinda hate how they cover my watch.
For when falconry gets in the way of activating where’s my iphone
I could see the being useful on a motorcycle. Any links or info?
It’s called ergon band
Thanks!
how would one comfortably wash their hands
That’s the neat part. You don’t.
You probably get better jerk readings when it's closer to the source..
The positioning vaguely resembles where divers have instruments and compasses and the like, but I assume this is just like a weird steampunk thing, or it's a little easier to operate the touch screen in that position (more stable base, less prone to randomly rotating etc), but that's what this sub has become, right? what problem is this even solving
looks more like a gadget than anything. it’s giving steampunk a little bit. but so inconvenient
The same problem jewelry solves. absolutely nothing but making you stand out.
oh, true, i always dismiss that one
yeah, not everything has to be practical or serve a specific purpose. sometimes options are purely aesthetic
I want one but its a bit expensive https://ergonband.com/product/ergonband-for-apple-watch/
Seems immediately annoying on the skin.
This looks like it would be good for the ultra for SCUBA diving.
Fist-watch?
Looks like how some people mount their altimeters when skydiving. I prefer mine on my wrist but it does slide around sometimes. This can prevent that.
Having a large penis. Not depending on other people's validation. There are many more examples...

I want it
Jerkoff monitor
Looks like it would work well with jacket sleeves
Ew. Germ collector. I want as few of my belongings interacting with door handles, etc, as possible.
Terrible idea. Design dud
