The only Christmas pickle I've heard of is when you hide the pickle ornament on the tree and whoever finds it gets a prize. It definitely did not go into a pickle jar.
My wife's family has three different sized pickle ornaments and they each correspond to specific presents. The kids are only allowed to get one pickle present.
My mom learned about this tradition when we were a little older, so we didnt do the pickle thing growing up, but with the grandkids my parents will usually chip in and buy one big-ish present and/or keep a large gift hidden in their garage from prying eyes.
We do Christmas eve at their house most of the time, so the "pickle present" goes to whichever grandkid that gets one of their big cool presents early/in front of their cousins. It's usually reserved for the younger kiddos, so me and my siblings scheme out a plan, we tell the older ones to hold back, and the pickle gets re-hidden as needed. There's 3 households, usually only one household does a big pickle present at grandma's, and as the kids get older, its just an annoying thing we make them hunt for in the tree before they get their last present lol

At first I thought "huh, that's weird it changed color." Then I realized that I've never even heard of Christmas pickles.
I’m pretty sure it’s a tradition where you hide a Christmas pickle in the Christmas tree and whomever finds it first gets to open the first present
Is that it?? My ex was insistent that trees needed pickle ornaments and I never knew why.
I thought it was just because she was Jewish.
This has me dying!

Is that a real tradition, or did you just make that up?
