I’ve recently fallen down the rabbit hole of lore that surrounds 32nd Avenue Books, Toys, & Gifts and I’m dying to know if anyone has figured out, or successful gotten an answer from the owners on:

1) Why they don’t allow browsing of books in-store/seem to want people to shop their equally impossible to browse website?

2) Why they are afraid of cellphone use in the store?

I know there’s all kinds of speculation, but has anything ever been confirmed?

  • It’s a cover. A book cover

  • Went into that store a month or two ago midday on a Sunday. The door was open and we started browsing and they said something like “oh we’re open by appointment only, no browsing, if you don’t know what you want we’re going to ask you to leave” uh ok bye???? As someone who has never left a bookstore without buying a book until then, it was fucking weeeeeird.

People should go in and when pressured pick up a random book or two and try to buy them. Or try and make appointments too and always be available (how about next wed, can you slide me in between those slots, I'm free after hours) and spin off from there.

Or get like twenty people lined up to all go in a few seconds apart.

I was going to say this same thing. Get a few pairs to go in shortly after each other and pack it out.

I'm gonna go grab a bunch of books and bring them to the counter and change my mind then leave.

Or better yet come equipped with a long obscure list of books you’re looking for with a few common titles peppered in for good measure and make them work the ruse a bit harder.

"Oh, okay. Can I schedule an appointment?" And see what happens. Or "huh, sure, but before I gomay I ask why?  Im quite intrigued by that policy for a retail store. Ive never heard of something like that and am just so curious about your store now!" And seee what happens

Can I schedule an appointment for 30 seconds from now?

Why even have a brick and mortar store? Just be a warehouse and sell online if you don’t want people in your store.

I dont want to go into detail why I have experience with this but this 100% sounds like a meeting/work space for a small cult. They do all sorts of tax/business fuckery but don't want outsiders in the space.

This is exactly what happened to my daughter and me. And they were so polite about telling us to gtfo if we weren't buying anything. Also, why is it an art gallery and children's toy store??? These dont go well together.

She also told us to not walk on a portion of the creaky floor because all of the foot traffic was wearing down the old building. The spot was right in the center of the toy section, almost completely unavoidable.

    Money laundering front maybe??

  • Every time I see one of these posts I think of Pulp Fiction. I’m convinced they have a gimp locked up in a box in the basement.

Coincidentally a great name for a book store

“Pulp Fiction” or “Gimp in the Basement”?

Pulp Fiction is a great name for a movie, now that I think about it. Someone should make that movie

Hear me out: Coffee shop and bookstore named gulp fiction

  • My favorite local conspiracy. There are tons of posts with people explaining their experiences at this store, on top of the hours of online reviews.

Of course nothing has been confirmed. This sub will freak the fuck out if there are ever any updates.

If anyone’s even been brave enough to ask and get thrown out, I’d love to hear those stories 😂 I saw a guy from westworld who was looking into it, dying to know how that went since nothing ever made it to print.

I’m unemployed and very tempted to do this with my free time haha

Plan a stake out - start an anonymous go fund me and make a living out some snooping. 😂

Or should I make an appointment and just try to out-weird them??

    [deleted]

This is great, I was going to ask for obscure recommendations

Do this and please record it with a spy camera lol

Clearly this is what you should do. How is your spy camera game?

Well… I have the time to refine my skills

For real tho, I live right down the street

Hey, so do I! Get over here so I can touch those nips!

Was super creeped out, then I saw the redditors name that you were replying to and dammit…. Reddit in a nutshell. Post about creepy local haunt, but touching nips because the username says to

Fuck it, I’ll go in and ask them a few questions. I’ll make a post about it whenever that happens lol

“So what’s the deal with you freaks?”

Transposing Westword into Westworld seems appropriate here.

Nothing ever making it to print is also scary.

Has anyone seen or heard from that guy?

I am just piggy backing off the highest comment to write out my theory on this.

Celia Brehm is registered as a Minority and Women-owned Business Enterprise (MWBE) which gives them access to large government contracts. They also own the property they're in which could imply there is no payment / lease on their location. In order to maintain the MWBE status they must have a brick and mortar location that operates as a store.

This is it. I think they make all their money on private and gov contracts and they are forced to pretend like they are an operable business. They don't give a shit about walk-ins and if anything, after 15 years of this they're probably sick of having to deal with it.

If this was criminal, they would be the worst criminals in the world. It's almost TOO obvious for money laundering to be the situation. The government would have caught on to these people forever ago.

    Anyways, that's my theory.

I used to live by there 20 years ago and frequented it, this never happened back then so something has def changed whatever the explanation

  • Went in there recently with my fiancée, just looking at what they had not looking for anything in particular. The lady kept asking us weird questions and following us around wouldn’t leave us alone, the gentleman just hovered and watched us like hawks said nothing. They eventually told us they had an appointment to go to and us shopping in their store was keeping them and asked us to leave. Vibes were weird AF. 10/10 don’t recommend and never going back.

At least you got to look around for a bit. I walked in, looked left, looked right, and the lady told me I needed to leave. “Appointment only!”

lol So it’s a front for some criminal operation or money laundering, right?

Gotta be… or a weird sex club

as someone who knows all of the weird sex clubs, this ain't it

    Can i come?

    Depends on the club

I actually want to go to Haunted House more than I want to go to club Aqua

Yeah, I built the back deck at Club Aqua.

That’s one of many theories. I’m thinking the truth is probably weirder though.

This exact thing happened to me. I got followed around said they had to go and was told basically to buy something or leave.

Sounds like the feminist bookstore in portlandia lmao

    Women and women (first)

Yessss thank you. The scene with Aubrey Plaza when she was like 22 is so fucking good

"The book you need is not within reach at this time."

Definitely one of my favorite skits of the show 😌 reminds me of simpler times.

It sounds like one of those stores that goes out of its way to not sell anything. I've been to a few such places and it's strange AF. They must be having a secret society meeting in the back, or they're a front for an international smuggling outfit. Because they're sure as shit not getting any money from the sale of merchandise. And their staff always makes it clear that you're not welcome there.

  • Has anyone asked for an appointment?

Right? I'd make an appt and NOT buy a book just to piss em off.

Make the appointment specifically to browse only, lol.

    Or bought a book?

Can you even buy books? Or is this a prop situation?

    Asking the real questions

    Right?! Im so tempted!

I’m thinking we all schedule appointments and show up at once 😂

  • I wonder if they live in that place and just use the store as a tax write off. they get weirded out and are constantly on edge because they know what they are doing is wrong but maybe there's a gray area that they skate through..they just have to have the appearance that it's a store but don't have to technically sell shit and can be the worst to customers as they please. this is all a theory and allegedly~

Haha I had a similar theory that maybe this is just how they write off their personal library 😂

When I went in there I saw very recently published books, which would make this even weirder.

I have a new life goal: live in a bookstore and use it to store all my books! Then chase people out because I don't want them to buy MY books!

Reminds me of those little yarn stores where the owner is so unfriendly that you’d swear she just opened it to have a place to justify her giant yarn stash.

Has anyone ever purchased a book from the store?

Yes! That’s been confirmed. It’s just seemingly rare if attempted in person.

  • There was a coffee shop near where I live in Denver. Never open. The few times that it was open, everything was free -- coffee, ice cream, sandwiches.

Then, a local body shop got raided for fencing stolen cars, and the coffee shop closed. They had the same owner. So ... this might be a similar situation.

So you think they're cooking the books?

I hate to speculate. I'd ask the Magic Eight Ball.

Cooking cook books is the real art.

  • I need someone to go full Tim Robinson chair company on this store

We are definitely looking at a Tecca like situation here. Someone check to see if the city of Denver is involved in any way.

That’s my plan. 55 CHARLOTTES WEB, 55 1984, 55 the hobbit, 55 chicken soup for the teenager soul!!!

No, thats the wrong Tim Robinson... you know what? Fuck it.

  • I honestly don’t know how they stay in business. Maybe it’s a money laundering front? Cause they suck and don’t seem to like customers.

The thing about money laundering is you do actually want to have customers so you have the appearance of a clean business and don't draw attention to yourself like they are.

Yeah, it’s pretty easy for the IRS to send someone there and get treated like crap and think “hmm, they don’t have the revenue they claim to have”

Sure. But criminals are often dumb.

Yeah but they’ve been doing this for like 20 years

Not really considering how defunded the IRS is lol. But still far from ideal to have an entire local lore and multiple reddit threads about your money laundering business.

Sounds like an illegal sports gambling casino to me. These still exist believe it or not lol

Books don’t really seem like they’d be some huge cash business either.

This is a thought I have for a Thai place near me! Laughed at a post in this sub a few months back asking about places people thought for fronts for things.

My partner and I joke all the time seeing that place “what are they hiding?!?”

It's somewhat common for semi-retired rich people to run book shops as a hobby, with minimal interest in actually turning a profit. My bet is that's the case here.

yeah occam's razor points to miserable old jerks who like the idea of running a bookstore but hate people too much to sell anything

  • I wonder how they interact when they have the farmers market on sundays during the summer. There’s got to be some stories.

I was buying something right in front of the store and me and my friends were talking about how weird it is. Then my other friend informed me that the owners were right next to us and definitely heard every word we said.

Honestly, good. Someone needed to do it.

I mean they must know by now!

    They have a booth…and it’s…odd

    How odd are we talking?

I’m going to have to pay attention this summer when I go up there on Sundays for the farmers market

  • For teachers, educators and corporate, our very competitive discount on quantity purchases will benefit schools and businesses. In addition to new books, we carry stationery, children's toys, and now have an art venue for local artists and a small coffee grab-and-go shop. We take individual orders and help with curriculum development. We are a veteran- and minority woman-owned business .

From their website. Maybe they do most of their business on large orders to institutional partners?

If they are money laundering or operating a front they are doing an extremely shitty job of it.

Piggybacking off of this, perhaps there’s a benefit to their online/educational/bulk side of the business by also offering a retail store front, in effect making it a “front,” but not in a nefarious or criminal sense.

This is true in the game store industry to a degree. You cant buy a lot of product without a Brick and Mortar location. You have to literraly do full walk through videos of your storefromt to show its a true LGS to be approved.

The owner is registered as a Minority and Women-owned Business Enterprise (MWBE) so I bet they rely on this (gov contracts) more than anything.

I mean don't get me wrong. The whole situation is bizarre as fuck, I'm just trying to put together an explanation.

I have a store. Most wholesalers/suppliers won't sell to you unless you prove you have a brick and mortar storefront.

Ok ok. This is starting to make sense then. They actually loathe having to operate this store but do so our of necessity for their wholesale business.

I think that's probably true. I asked my mom about this place since my parents have lived in the Highlands area for 30+ years, and she told me the store used to have a different name. I can't remember what it was off the top of my head, but it was in Spanish. She said they were an educational/bilingual book store, and she bought some educational Spanish-language books there for me as a kid. I don't remember what else she said about them, but it seems like they rebranded and got weird at some point since then, or (like another commenter said) they're more focused on selling to educators and maintain the storefront just so they can run a wholesale business.

  • Stop in when you get the chance, it's an experience.

Oh, that’s absolutely the plan, I’m just trying to convince someone to join me. It seems like it’s best as a shared experience lol

You son of a bitch, I'm in

Get a group of 10 or so people. Hide an iPhone camera. Record the reactions 😂

I’m down, let’s make an appointment

    And buy a book

Ohh. Make a flash mob style group descend on the store. People coming in 2 at a time back to back over the course of five minutes, till there's 30 people in the store browsing, all with their cellphones out and recording.

I'll go! We should go and each time ask for a very specific book they probably wouldn't have and just keep showing up repeatedly asking for different books each time

  • It's so weird in there. I love bookstores and I avoid this one.

  • I live in this neighborhood and challenge everyone that visits to try to buy something for there. Two have succeeded. The rest have been thrown out or had the door locked as they were trying to walk in. We will never know the truth

Any demographic similarities between the two that succeeded?

This is what I was wondering!

  • I accidentally walked in here meaning to go to the other bookstore just down the street. Once I realized what I had done I pulled my phone out and the lady shoo’d me out of there so fast. As everyone has said strange place…

  • So I did a dive into this place like a year ago and came across old newspaper articles (1190s or early 2000s maybe) praising the place. They were doing community events, cultural events for the community ect.... then at some point they stopped letting people in??? I never could find a reason why. I did get nosy and found their now grown son on fb but I wasnt brave enough to message him directly lol .

I imagine so.wthing had to of happened?

They’ve been open since the 1190s 😰. The plot thickens…

Maybe they were legit, but the pipes are lead and the owners are slowly descending into madness.

I remember reading somewhere that they were the victims of some fraud scheme. Someone impersonated their store online and ripped people off. They got extremely paranoid after that.

All of the good press was from the 1190s. After the original owners passed away from the Black Death in the 1300's, they had staffing issues, and they stopped letting folks inside the store.

    1190s were the best 90s.

  • The thing that really stands out to me is the way that they will slam and sometimes lock the door after people only to open it again a few minutes later. So weird!

Maybe it's a performance art piece by two eccentric millionare retirees?

Secretly filming Documentary Now! episodes in there.

  • It really feels like a fake business for something bad. The elderly couple are clearly guarding the store.

The weirdest thing to me is if it’s fake, why did they pick a spot with good walking traffic? And why prohibit browsing? Even a fake business would want extra money. I wonder what happens if you know exactly what you want to buy? Will they claim the book is out of stock? Do they have a computer or cash register to even make sales?

My favorite yelp review is someone saying that it’s what a front to a mob looks like.

Agreed. Like when I first moved here, I always thought Black and Read 2 was a money laundering front because it’s in a weird spot and has a weird name. Thought this one was normal. Funny it’s the opposite. But maybe that’s a good thing for them?

At the end of the day, I think they’re probably just kooky and make do with school wholesale or old familiar customers.

  • No idea but I can confirm that this place is extremely fucking weird

  • I visited 4 years ago & thought I was being asked for COVID/lockdown reasons, while every other store on the block was open. Went to the Google Reviews to have my experience validated, and one of them reviews said the no phone policy was because the in the 2010s, the owners said someone had taken photos of their store and posed as the store online, collected online orders/money, but never delivered items & ruined their reputation. They said they didn't want anyone to have photos to impersonate them again. Okay, maybe? But photos alone does not an impersonation make.

Two of the oddest parts of my visit was that they

    1. Had a sign in the window for an "in store sale on all toys & games," yet you could not browse the store
    2. There was a table outside of ARCs (advanced reader copies for promotional purposes) that cost $5 each as a donation to a Children's organization. ARCs are sent to readers/reviewers for free & cannot be resold, so the entire thing felt icky to me. And they recommended I buy 1 of those instead of browsing the store.
  • I posted about trying to go in there on another post and was never allowed in. Everytime I tried to walk in they said “sorry doing inventory” and closed the door.

We told my MIL about it and she was asked to leave within 5 minutes of browsing books. They said if she wants to buy she needs to select a book online and it will be ordered for her.

I also saw them at the Highland street fair open but not letting anyone in and saying we are closed but want to support the community

There is clearly something weird going on. They now have a no phones policy taped outside their window so it’s clearly some sort of front or weird shit

Maybe they just love every single book and can’t part with them so order copies to sell… I am so intrigued…

  • All these comments about appt only and no one bothered to make a fucking appt and see if they still act weird asf during the appt.

Also, sounds like conspiracy theorists/paranoids own it

Wonder what they say if someone actually tries to book an appointment with them on the spot when they are chastised…

THIS. Like someone attempt to make an appointment and see what happens lmao

They cold called me to book an appointment to see my artwork

    They never showed up.

  • It’s my favorite local conspiracy. I really want to visit one of these days just to experience being told off myself

  • Once a year, they have to go through a fire inspection. Maybe Denver Fire Station 12 knows the secrets.

Quick! Someone as one of them!!!

  • Could it be a secret gambling ring or brothel or drugs or something? And you have to ask for the secret code word book in order to get access?

Gambling has always been my theory

  • I just took a watercolor class there with a friend, and the people who I think are the owners were there. They were surprisingly friendly. I expected more weirdness and standoffish vibes given I live in the neighborhood and know the lore about this place. That said, not sure I would do another painting class there in the future

Listen!! All you people who have been in the store and aren’t sharing details are killing me.

Whhhhy wouldn’t you do another painting class? Please share more!

Two reasons: (1) The class itself wasn’t very instructional — we didn’t really get much guidance on how to do watercolors, more so a “have fun with it” kind of vibe. I was hoping for more structure. And then (2) the space has harsh overhead lighting and there wasn’t any background music playing. Just not a lot of ambiance.

  • It seems like every city has its share of these weird stores and the story is usually that the people running it either:
    (1) Own the place outright and have for many years;
    (2) Lucked into a place with very low rent and a disinterested owner;
    (3) Have money/inheritance that allows them to just spend whatever they need;
    (4) Have a relative willing to pony up the money for (3)

All four cases allow the proprietor(s) to just sit there and fuck around and "play shop clerk" all day long without having to worry about sales or marketing or customer satisfaction.

And isn’t that so sad that a store that has no need for a store front (if it’s legit) is just taking up a prime shopping location for another business. Or usable bookstore!

  • Just read some of "Steve's Book Reviews" on their website and uhh...doesn't seem like the kind of place I would want to patronize even without all the other weirdness.

Yup, right winger conspiracy theorists confirmed.

  • I read comparisons to Seinfeld’s Soup Nazi and it seems to fit from the stories.

At least the soup nazi served soup sometimes. I’ve never heard a story of anyone actually buying anything there

    No books for you!

  • Oh that place is notoriously the weirdest business in Denver! I was so offended after my first time going there years ago when I got scolded for having my phone in my hand and then followed around the store until I gave up and left but I realized after I looked them up that nigh that I just gone through some sort of NW Denver rite of passage and was pleased to have joined the club! It’s wild that they are still in business but I am sort of impressed that they have made it this long and seem to be even doubling down on being the worst customer service ever. It’s their niche!

  • Maybe they also own Blue Ice on Broadway

Here’s a newspaper story about them from the 90s. There’s more about them online but they were big into the Chicano movement and created this bookstore specifically for Latino literature, hence their original name Cultural Legacy books, which may have opened in the 1986 or 1987 before moving to the highlands in 1996. All of the business articles of incorporation are public but I won’t post them because it has names and addresses.

They also own property in Golden. Seems they keep the bookstore running because it is their personal business, and since they own millions of dollars of property around Denver and golden they probably don’t need the money. No link bc identifying info but it’s public info under the biz records.

The wife is a professor at CU and built the BA/MA program in ethnic studies in 2009.

    https://www.colorado.edu/education/2016/10/21/new-41-program-adds-future-teachers-community-leaders

She also runs a church group for immigrant women, specifically mothers, built around learning English and making friends. She was from Peru and was a young mother in Denver.

There’s a ton more info on them if you look for it. Tons. They seem like decent people and the book store is more about hosting events and church groups and selling textbooks for the course that the professor wrote (a professor who requires the text book they wrote seems sus af but idk if that’s illegal and I don’t care to dig into it further).

So, not a cult or money laundering scheme, just a bored older business owner who wants to have church groups and such in their bookstore that makes no money which is fine because they own the whole building (and probably more buildings if you look for them).

This is actually so helpful. However, it does make me think they should just keep the store front closed and locked with an "open by appointment only" sign.

  • I went here and browsed for a half hour, bought a couple things. Asked one question and the person was helpful, then let me browse some more. Had a completely normal experience

Edit: Another commenter asked if I was sure I wasn’t talking about the “other store down the street.” So I googled it, and they were right. I was talking about West Side Books, which is (was?) also on 32nd and has a 4.8 star rating as opposed to 32nd Avenue’s 1.2 rating. My mistake.

Are you sure it wasn’t the other book store down the street?

You’re right. I was thinking of West Side Books

So the unicorn 5 star reviews are real! I think the random inconsistency every so often is the most baffling part haha

Maybe they’re just bigots? And if they don’t like the cut of your jib, no browsing for you?

My friend had that happen when he went to look at a Harley-Davidson shop. He went after work and was in a suit. I guess he was too clean cut for them and they didn't want his type around there so they were rude until he left the dealership.

I hate that kind of dickhead gatekeeping - do they want to be judged by their appearance? Why do it to anyone else then, much less someone who potentially wants to give you money. We all contain multitudes, best to not judge a book by its cover.

  • Time portal.

  • Yall are making me want to stop by

  • I lived a block away from this place for about a decade. Anywho like 15 years ago I bought a book for my wife in there, browsed, and I remember chatting with the dude at the register.

Didn’t know this place got lore and the owners kooky. I really miss living in that neighborhood!

  • [insert Portlandia "Toni and Candace" meme]

    Edit: Edit.

NOT TORI AND CANDACE 😭🤣🤣 bahahahaha

  • I think covid sent them down a weird path. Pre-covid it was still kind of weird but more or less a functioning bookstore that one could browse in (just no phones).

  • The only quasi legal things I can imagine are they either: -deal in collectible books with really high value and don’t want walk-in customers potentially damaging things. -they sell a lot of books online, so they just have a storefront, but 99% of their income is from EBay or some other book specific online store

  • Like everyone else, I wandered thinking I could find a book for my nephew — they literally have signs about coffee and book clubs and shit — instead you run smack into an old couple yelling at you about appointments only and “no browsing allowed.” 🤣

  • Has anyone gone to one of their events? They have one coming up…

  • According to a google review

“The reason they don't allow electronics in the store is because in the recent past, somebody took photos of their store and created a fake website in order to scam people out of money. By the time the owners realized what was happening, people had already ordered off the fake website and they had no idea why people were calling them asking where their book order was. They involved the police and initiated a formal investigation.”

    That sounds like total BS

Lol right? Like this doesn't seem to be a problem in any other store

  • Here it is, 1:30 am. I can't sleep and now I've fallen down a rabbit hole in the mystery of 32nd Street Books. Thanks a lot. 😵

  • I’ve become a somewhat regular shopper there. I guess I have been “accepted”. I was asked to leave on my first visit, however, I returned later and purchased a couple of children’s books and got a recommendation for another book (which was fantastic). They are strange but once you know them, they are quite nice, just maybe a bit off. They are now offering art classes and seem to be more welcoming than in the past.

  • The woman there has been there for years, my partner grew up in the area and told me she used to give out free books to kids after school

  • I went it last year to buy a pencil since the stationary store across the street only sells pens. Figured it would be a shit show but it was actually normal.

No one harassed me, I had to ask where the pencils were. A mom and son were looking at kids toys.

My hunch on the phones is they’re extremely paranoid of people going in the store and searching for books they like on Amazon.

  • I’m rooting for you all to find answers, but hope people do it with some respect and discretion. Flooding the store with people or harassing an old couple with cameras is not going to make them any more welcoming.

  • I’m surprised no one has mentioned this yet, but the bookstore owners own the building (including the space next door where Wax Trax opened up). The simplest explanation is that they have been around a long time, are now very paranoid, and can afford to keep running their weird little store.
