• a real person would never do this

This just reminded me of a man I saw driving over parking spots and over the small concrete barriers to park IN the bike lane on south Broadway a few weeks ago 😭

I’m in that bike lane 3-5 days a week and will knock on windows and shout at people who park in the bike lane. I wish we had a system for reporting that like they have in NYC

A bounty system would be incredible

What an absolute savage 🤣.....I'm right there with you I'm just not that ballsy so kudos good sir.

What a savage. I bet he had one of those stupid large trucks with the exhaust coming outta the bed of said truck

In fact a real person did do this, as this current Waymo model is currently only being driven by humans.

    How did you know this?

Probably going to be human assisted for a bit as Denver has some pretty fucked up streets and intersections (glares at Highland).

Also there is fuck all places to stop so I can see waymo turning lodo and few other spots into complete parking lots when they decide to stop in the middle of the road.

Kinda surprised they are letting them drive here but I guess I shouldn't be.

When will AI finally take us over 😩

A real person did. Waymo’s in Denver currently use drivers. They are not autonomous at the moment.

Like a true native. Waymo is already blending right in.

  • Mimicking the behavior of real drivers quite well I see

  • They're driving over the dogs, they're driving over the cats

    They're driving over the pets!

They're driving over the pets that live there

They’re bringing drugs, they are bringing crime.

And some, I assume, are good vehicles.

Very fine vehicles on both sides

Hide yo wife, Hide yo kids.

    Thank you for this! 🤣

Hide your dogs, hide your cats, hide your parakeets. They comin

    Eating cats,, with their bumpers.

As long as it’s the pits, fine.

  • It needs an expired license plate if it wants to fit in

No plates at all actually lol

They have back plates, but they're still registered in California, so they're not even helping to pay for Colorado's road maintenance.

In all fairness the majority of funding for Colorado roads and their maintenance comes from sales tax. If I remember correctly only like 30%(ish) is funded by road use taxes such as registration.

So if the cab fair has any sales tax then they are helping.

  • What happens when there is snow packed roads and lines are not visible? Not that we will ever see snow again…

I know you're being sarcastic but the timing of Literally tonight and tomorrow lol

Did you get anything? Just went out to plug my block heater in and it didn’t feel half bad outside

Gonna be like mid 30s all day I think and then snow off and all pretty much all day but idk how much. We had a dusting when I came into work.

    [deleted]

And they've been doing cold-weather testing for years.

    Have they?

Yes, in Michigan, upstate NY, and around Tahoe.

Looks like 4 x 4. Now, use baldi tyres and yr a native.

So fun that we get to be part of this test, unwillingly

There are also student drivers on the road.

GPS and mapped routes throughout the city, iirc. Its one of the reasons they have a human driver/babysitter while they run the beta -- to map out the city and lanes.

Also, they use radar and sonar, not just visible light, so they can 'see' much better than humans.

That's why they're testing it here before letting the public use them

Just park for a day and it’ll be melted away

They will shut down, stop, block intersections...just wait.

I'm trying to be optimistic about self driving cars, but the Waymo cars couldn't even handle a blackout in San Francisco a few weeks ago. How are they going to manage through snow in a city and state that relies on the sun to clear the lanes?

I thought the Waymos did exactly what they were supposed to do.

They did, a bunch of guys decided to prank them in a dead end one way in the sunset though and they failed that miserably

When the stoplights went out, a combination of factors led to some cars simply stopping in the middle of intersections or streets. I like the idea of self driving cars, but if a blackout can defeat them, what will a massive snow storm do?

Yeah why didn’t they just floor it through the uncontrolled intersection like a real driver.

    [deleted]

Over here in Aurora two days ago, they had the two left turn lanes fully closed from Peoria (south) to Parker (south). There are two other through lanes that go to 225 SB and 9 Mile Station. Instead of going down and U-turning by 9 Mile Station, drivers were literally stopping in the intersection trying to decide if they could make the left turn and wanted to risk it with the red left turn arrows.

Autonomous vehicles may do stupid things, but I'm way less worried about being in a crash with them than I am with inattentive, distracted, high Denver drivers.

The thing about this is that they learn, improve, and apply that to every vehicle in their fleet. They've been testing in cold weather locations for years but I'd be surprised if they'll be operating when snow is in the forecast but they can see better in the snow than humans can and they have a "photographic memory" of where they're at.

  • At least they act like Denver drivers

The will, if denver drivers are driving the test, they will do exactally what the test drivers do, this is why they do not stop at stopsigns in SF or NYC.

  • Better than the video I saw of it driving down the light rail tracks in Phoenix.

  • Right because uber driver wouldn’t lol

I've been so many places recently where the doordash drivers were pulled up in front of the building blocking driveways when there were parking spaces 15 feet away. Ugh

Seriously, the amateur driver (uber / lyft / door dash/ etc) situation has become a fucking menace to pedestrian safety and traffic flow. I live near Broadway & Ellsworth and the shit I see on a daily basis stretches the definition of human intelligence.

  • I wonder how the cops even write a citation for them during a traffic stop, without a driver name? Or if the car were being towed, would it sense that and zoom away? 🤣

I love the idea of a tow truck chasing a self driving car around a parking lot, playing yakety sax

Tickets aren't possible for now, but that is changing. Most states write their traffic ordinances with explicit reference to citing the driver of a vehicle, and even though it might seem reasonable to extend "driver" to mean "operating company" for autonomous vehicles, ure legal framework doesn't allow that.

So far, in all the situations where an autonomous vehicle was pulled over by law enforcement, a notice was given to the operating company (Waymo) but without fine or penalty.

California just passed a law that takes effect this summer that will allow "notices of non-compliance" to be issued to autonomous vehicle operators in lieu of tickets (but with the same or greeter fine). The operators will be able to challenge The notices in traffic court just like a driver could.

The operator also has to report the violation to the state DMV. There will be future legislation that will establish some kind of point system for operators of autonomous vehicles with specific threshold levels. The number of vehicles the operator is licensed to have operating at any one time will be tied to those points in some way.

Colorado doesn't have anything like this currently, but there was discussion about it when the initial testing license to Waymo was granted.

  • Not surprised at all.

  • We don’t get the sweet-ass Jaguars? Aww man.

    Those are here too

The only team to beat the broncos and end their winning streak

  • Nothing says solving traffic issues like empty cars on our streets. 👍

Just 5% of cars driving with sufficient distance can reduce traffic bottlenecks by 50%. So yeah, you really can add more cars and reduce traffic.

    With sufficient distance?

    Following distance

  • Downvote me to hell, but I was in Austin recently and did everything I could to hail a Waymo. It was seriously impressive, way more (intentional pun) smooth than a human driver, and I didn’t feel that awkward “is he going to talk to me??”

The tech is awesome, but still in its infancy as you can see they limit how far you can go.

We loved them in SF and Phoenix. The Uber and Lyft subs come up in my feed regularly, and let’s just say I only use those services when there is no other option. And the last time I took an Uber in Denver, the driver circled the block a few times so he could keep talking to me. 🥴  I’m sure I’ll be voted down by the rideshare drivers, but I’m picking the robot car every single time. Waymo has been such a nicer experience every time we’ve used it.

The ride share drivers in this town can get bent.

    [deleted]

Yeah, but their drivers do plenty of heinous shit - they're not magically off the hook because they were chosen.

This is the thing. I'm so fed up with Uber and Lyft drivers. Slow, inattentive, listening to political talk radio, strong car air scents that are nauseating, aggressive or lackadaisical driving, can't speak enough English to understand my directions when I'm trying to help, etc.

Waymo was a great experience when I tried it in Phoenix. I hate to lose the human element, but when the human element is **gestures\**, then I'll take Waymo. I don't have to tip Waymo either.

Seriously. I don’t have to worry if the Waymo is racist and profiling me. I don’t have to listen to a soft begging about how Uber doesn’t pay them enough and they need money for their sister’s cat’s boyfriend’s back surgery. The Waymo doesn’t get to rate me and give me a one star for no reason. Waymo doesn’t refuse to turn on AC when I’m in DC in August and we’re stuck in traffic (and still expects a tip, because remember…the cat’s boyfriend’s surgery). And there are comments in this very thread acting like it’s some kind of problem that you don’t want to talk to your Uber driver. I’m there for a ride, not to entertain the driver.

The customer subs on Reddit are completely taken over by incel drivers. And they see THEMSELVES as the main event, not the passengers. We have to follow their arbitrary rules if we don’t want one star, we have to tip because Uber doesn’t pay enough, I’ll get my phone thrown in the trash if I accidentally leave it in the car, I have to be ready and waiting outside before I request a ride because we’re worried about the person NOT paying for the ride being inconvenienced, I could go on forever but I’m obviously fed up too. The drivers will never understand why so many people would rather let a robot car drive them on a highway than deal with them.

in SF I am actually willing to pay a little extra for a waymo vs. an uber. Its such a better experience

Working constantly out of SF, I’ve seen the tech is one engineer calling the cars retarded at 2am because it keeps honking as they try to fix whatever error loop it’s stuck in.

The rideshare drivers in this town are particularly awful at what they do. How they drive, where they decide to park, Im over it.

What has happened to us as a society where we are afraid of small talk with strangers

I don’t have to worry about a waymo spouting conspiracy theories or saying thinly veiled racist shit.

    Or pitching their MLM

I don't mind chatting with strangers. Though sometimes being a captive audience for a 30 minute screed on vaccines is unpleasant.

More importantly though, the Waymos never drive aggressively, never speed, never get distracted.

American education happened to us as a society, and all that implies.

I'm not afraid of small talk with a stranger. I've actually had some great Lyft rides with drivers that were fantastic to talk to. What I'm afraid of is the random Uber driver using somebody else's account that SA's my gf trying to come home from the bar. I'm "afraid" of the nazi asshole listening to conservative talk radio making inappropriate comments to me about my asian girlfriend. I'm "afraid" of the white supremacist driver who decides that since I'm a middle aged white man, he's safe to unload his most vile ideas and opinions and I'll agree with him.

And beyond that, I'm "afraid" of the drivers who drive 30mph over the speed limit dodging traffic, because the faster they get you there the faster they can pick up another person and the more money they make. I'm "afraid" of people valuing my safety lower than the extra $10 they'll make today if they break all the traffic laws.

People aren't afraid of small talk with strangers. They just don't want to deal with the kind of people whose only employment opportunity is unsupervised gig work driving. And nothing against people who do it because they enjoy it, make a bit of extra money, or it gives them flexibility, but overall there tends to be a reason most of those drivers aren't in a managed workplace environment.

I am a big proponent of Waymo’s. I know anything related to AI is very unpopular right now, but Waymo’s genuinely offer a much better taxi experience than Uber and Lyft.

And before you go crazy, I believe we should continue to invest large amounts of money into public transportation, but even the best transit cities in the world still rely on taxis because they ultimately serve different purposes

even the best transit cities in the world still rely on taxis….

No they don’t. The best transit cities are walkable, with trams and rails and buses.

Taxis are a very inefficient way to move a lot of people.

No they don’t. The best transit cities are walkable, with trams and rails and buses.

Taxis are a very inefficient way to move a lot of people.

Not everyone is able to walk to their nearest bus stop. you have to keep in mind accessibility. Always think about who’s not in the room with you.

And yes. It’s almost like taxis serve a different purpose than moving a lot of people.

The best transit cities in the world all rely on taxis. Because they serve different purposes. This is not meant to be an anti public transit, dense walkable cities take. Taxis genuinely serve a real purpose for our communities.

what a strange comment. we have RTD access-on-demand.

In the Netherlands, (and in other parts of Europe) people who are unable to walk to the bus stop have a variety of options including little 2 seater electric micro cars. These communities are substantially easier to navigate for people with mobility issues compared to car dependent cities that rely on taxis.

For example, Trams are ground level and one of the easiest public transit to access.

Can you give me an example of “best transit cities in world?” Maybe we have different definitions.

London, Barcelona, Tokyo, all of them.

I took 2 in SF and enjoyed them a lot

The computers need to learn. Its going to be rocky the first few years, but the tech will improve and will eventually be be better drivers than humans.

Waymo’s are already significantly safer drivers than humans. I think people in this thread are just being contrarians. Waymo’s experience 80% less crashes than human drivers.

Yeah this idea that Waymos are currently more dangerous/harmful than human drivers is ludicrous lol

The data is very clear that Waymo vehicles are already significantly more safe, and it will only continue to get better.

Waymo has been operating for about a decade and is already better than humans.

    [deleted]

I miss the human interaction, I really do. I remember in the earlier days of Uber and Lyft it was great. I remember having fun and interesting conversations. They'd tell me about their city when I was visiting. Atlanta had some of the most entertaining drivers; one of our drivers really needed to quit Lyft and become a comedian. Some would give recommendations or tell me about what's going on. One here was a teacher and it was around the teacher strikes circa 2018 (or was it 2019?) and I learned more about that from someone involved.

That level of interaction is gone though. Most of the drivers I've had in recent memory didn't speak enough English to understand me. Often they're not paying attention, have 2-3 phones, sometimes on the phone having a conversation in some other language. Or they have some weird political talk radio on. Or they just have to tell me their crazy opinions; like a bit ago when I'd always wear masks on the rides, I had one go off on me about how useless masks are. Like OK bro, I bet you'd want me to have this on if I'm sick. They drive slowly, or aggressively, or inattentively, or abruptly. I had one dude who must've been on a bunch of stimulants almost crash us three times in less than a mile from my house to an appointment one day when my car was in for service.

When this is overwhelmingly the interaction, I'd rather avoid it.

  • Hail a bunch of them to a dead end street and they won't be able to get out

I like the way you think.

  • Hot take: I'm willing to try it just because of how awful my experience with Denver Uber drivers has been. From trash in the front seat up to my knees to admitting driving while high.

Not saying its better because I haven't tried it, but I'm willing to give it a chance.

I did it in phoenix and it was pretty amazingly nice. Set you music and climate control and cruise along without some driver on their phone trying to pick their next ride.

I do think that we should tax them heavily to pay for RTD

Are you able to tell them where to drop you off or does it just naively go to an address and stop?

Tbh I can’t remember I only used it a few times. I think there is a way to end the ride early but I’m not sure about getting like right in front of a house — we were always going from hotel to restaurants etc. I do remember having to go to some predetermined spots for it to pick me up.

They had a first Friday street party sort of thing going on and I thought that was going to defeat the Waymos but they really navigated through all of the people in the street and came to pick me up.

  • I'm a downtown biker. Whenever I see this (human or otherwise) I casually flip down their side view mirror.

I wonder how a Waymo will try to correct for this.

  • Nothing better than actually using a bike to commute and getting blocked by an empty car.

This should help traffic, add more cars to the street. Crazy.

  • They are in beta mode supposedly with a human driver, which is ironic.

    A.I. - Actually Indians.

Ok that gave me a chuckle.

    I have AI- Actual Intelligence.

  • Death to the clankers!

  • Human driver simulation: accuracy 100%

Somebody tag a Native sticker on it.

  • My cop friend would just leave the ticket under the wipers, lol

  • Let your bike lock do the talkin

  • Aw man! It's hard to tell, not that it means they don't, but don't these have drivers at the moment?

I had the best ride share ride I've ever had last Wednesday and then I had my first Waymo ride later that day and that was the best ride share ride I've ever had. That night I had a bad ride and I can't wait for these to go live in Denver. Their only shortcoming is their limited/no highway use but that will be resolved in time.

There was a driver. He yelled at me for blocking the bike lane to take a picture, preventing the car from driving forward for a few seconds. We joked about how it messed up and then I went on my way

  • They don’t need front plates either? Smh.

What IS the chubby sticking out in front.

    Not a cow poke. Icky.

    A sensor, probably a camera.

  • better than uber drivers and it ain’t close

  • I’m going to order 6 of them to come pick me up at the corner of Wadsworth and 38th tomorrow at noon.

Its like making your own beyblades fight against each other.

  • Time for some creative troubleshooting. What sorts of things will Waymos avoid? We need to try stuff and see what works, then get those things deployed. Cheap is fine, it just needs to be something the Waymos know to avoid, and that randos won't steal.

Traffic cones. Just grab one or two from a construction site and they're trapped.

    Why?

Right now, a Waymo has no way to differentiate a bike lane and a parking lane.

We need a way to help the Waymo understand which is which.

Human drivers will park here willfully, but Waymos have a much stricter algorithm.

Yes, they do. There are bike lanes all over their service areas in CA. I haven't seen a Waymo in Denver without a driver yet, so unless OP saw it park there without a driver, it's reasonable to assume that a person parked it there.

In that case, Casey Niestat that shit

    [ Removed by Reddit ]

  • wait i have only seen ones that are driven by people

  • So...

First thought, I won't flip out but it should be reported to Wayne and I'll react based on their response.

Second thought, aren't these in testing right now with a human in the driver seat to be sure of performance? In which case, "what the fuck".

There was a driver. He yelled at me for blocking the bike lane to take a picture, preventing the car from driving forward for a few seconds. We joked about how it messed up and then I went on my way

He yelled at you?!? For "blocking the bike lane?

  • Has anyone called Bryan?

  • The only mode of transportation less efficient than a single occupancy vehicle with 1 person in it...

Is a single occupancy vehicle with 0 people in it.

  • Just like a true native

  • i saw one today! definitely a head turner with that LIDAR sensor. can't wait to try em.

  • You can’t swing a dead cat in Austin without hitting one of those ugly ass vehicles.

I've only seen one so far...

  • If you’re going to kill jobs, you could at least not block the bike lane!

  • Never driven in a "waymo" before. What's it like?

It was the best rideshare experience I've ever had. Drove better than a human, control the temp and music through the car or the app.

I took one of the self driving cars in Vegas (different brand called poot or something) because it was free and I was curious - it was nice. Those ones had seats set up so you could face your friends, pick your own music, set temps. Other drivers would cut it off though because they knew this car almost “lacked confidence” lmao

    Those are Zoox (Amazon)

poot :D how did you come up with that for Zoox...

  • I hated these when I used to have to deliver in California. I was parked in front of an HOA complex's mailbox and the driver was yelling at me that the car won't move because I'm in the way.

I decide to be nice because I needed to kill some time so I reverse then the stupid vehicle kept going forward.

The stupid thing wasn't even supposed to be in the HOA area

  • whered the jaguars go?!

They're around too but I think their contract is up with them. They're now getting Hyundai Ioniq 5s and this Geely Zeekr. These new vehilces use their 6th generation driving tech, while the Jaguars are 5th gen.

  • They are the second horseman of the apocalypse!

  • What kind of car is this? I want the jaguars!

Zeekr. The Jaguars will be going away eventually, they use their older tech. Their other new vehicle is the Hyundai Ioniq 5.

Thanks! I really love how smooth the jaguars are, but I assume these will be just as nice, if not better!?

  • Drove past my work yesterday, what exactly is it?

It's a brand (owned by Google) of driverless cars used for ride-sharing. Not sure what make/model, didn't recognize it. There was a person in the driver's seat though, I think they were doing testing.

  • Call the police!!

  • Flat tires, anyone?

  • Saw one of these last night. There's a reason everyone who's had them show up in their city hates them

Source? Personal experience in Phoenix, SF, LA…they’re great, much better than uber/lyft.

Had my first Waymo experience last week, it was fantastic.

You clearly don't know what you're talking about. They are wildly popular in every city they are in and demand constantly outstrips supply.

Cities are big. Plenty of room for love and hate.

Coworker relocated from Phoenix and said they're awesome. So I agree with you.

Spent a lot of time in Phoenix and love em

That's because for half the year a car is the only thing stopping people from Pheonix from dying of heat stroke.

I was pleasantly surprised the first time I took Waymo. This was in SF, and it drove better than a person would.

And what is that supposed reason?

  • Shocked Waymo hasn’t been sued yet for violating ADA laws.

  • God awful company

  • Please don’t use them

  • A train operator came on the radio and said that a Waymo car blew past train protection downtown and the train had to brake.

  • U-locks aren't just for locking up your bike

  • they should just tow them.

  • Because Denver doesn’t have enough problems with bike lanes

  • How do we bully them outta here

  • [ Removed by Reddit ]

  • Hello from Austin tx! Our Waymo's are doing okay. We have the Jaguar foaled ones :)

"BOO GO BACK TO TEXAS BITCH" - Every Coloradan 😜

  • Of course they do, it's a robot car. It's probably not programmed to park anywhere else. lmao

  • Yeah one of these stupid drone did a very illegal u turn right in front of me yesterday morning.

  • Solves an issue that doesn’t exist. What’s wrong with using Uber/Lyft? God forbid we keep humans employed

Uber and Lyft barely pay their drivers and are a scummy system for everyone involved and should be eliminated

    Human drivers are terrible.
