Our government is fighting it, just not by returning the aggression. The Danish ambassador and the head of Greenland's representation in the US spoke to members of Congress and White House officials a couple of days ago, and the Danish and the Greenlandic ministers of foreign affairs will meet Rubio next week. I could be putting too much faith in him, but I don't think we could find a better fit for this mission than our current minister of foreign affairs. He has an impressive ability to navigate crises that should have ended his political career. Hopefully he'll be able to use that ability for all of us now.
Call me naive, but I think this will open re-negotiations on the existing defense agreement and the US getting even more freedom and access to Greenland rather than military action. We might be able to pull a Canada and convince Trump that he achieved a great deal unlike any in history. Then we can make up some sort of ceremony with our King, who's in pretty good standing in Greenland, to really sell the "historical moment", since Trump loves all of that royal, ceremonial stuff. The King could bring his kids, and somehow highlight that he and the Queen gave the two youngest Greenlandic middle names, just to mark Greenland's place in the Kingdom. The King should be in full military dress and so should the Crown Prince, who's currently serving. We could have used our former special forces King Frederik "Pingo" X much sooner.
Basically, our best option right now is diplomatic manipulation.
If it comes down to it, though, Danish soldiers in Greenland have had a default order to immediately return fire in case of an attack since 1952. I hope we won't see how that would play out in reality.
Keep fighting against him domestically. If he realises that this entire thing won't be a political win, he might try to tone down those threat and spin it somehow. But who knows, he's not exactly rational.

Just an FYI, MLK's non-violent protests only worked because they included an implied tangible threat of violence from others such as Malcolm X. MLK won because he was the peaceful alternative that didn't include a new civil war, and even then he was still portrayed as a violent radical at the time. It's fine you don't plan to get involved in violence personally, but I'd really recommend getting ready to support the ones who do.
That’s such a relief to hear. I don’t mean to be patronising, but the amount of Americans that think that us democracy is somehow immune what happened in Germany pre ww2 is very worrying. Here's an idea for a protest. We know that your American cities are car centric. So if your protests are to be successful they might have to be car based as well. Get a large amount of buddies together, strap a bunch of large anti Trump banners to your cars. Drive around the suburbs, from strip mall to strip mall, horns blaring. End the trip in a large parking lot where you can socialise and organise.

Lack of education and cultural bitterness towards concepts of sharing/communalism (mostly the latter). Anecdotal perspective; I'm 25, living in Oregon right now (considered "purple" in terms of left/rightism nationally). I grew up in a rural Californian region, which despite California's global reputation, meant I was in a very red area (as is the typical distinction in political leanings, rural vs. urban).
The simplest belief of the average American is that if you don't contribute via work, you do not deserve to be sustained/you do not have rights. This is the driving basis for all decision-making as we see it now - the opinion of the American that has no understanding of history (the vast majority) is in the rumour and reputation of Europe/the world, which is that "the Europeans only live well because we subsidize their military and research", which is a point of resentment. My roommate (28 years old, supremely apathetic until he was forced to vote, now a very confident Republican) directly tells me these beliefs.
This basic "truth" is combined with a cultural worship of individualism in a cowboy/bravado sense - if something cannot be done alone, then it didn't mean anything anyways. The simplistic values of a good life espoused both by American Christianity and by the runoff of 1960s Westerns, 70s Vietnam, 80s action heroes, and 90s Wallstreet are that personal success is the key to relaxation, to peace, and to meaning. Money solves problems - life is a series of problems - money is the most efficient pursuit of a good life. Get rich first, buy solutions later. To be dependent on others is an embarrassment and an emasculation - a lack of self-dependency is the mark of a failure. Conversely, if a task would require charitable assistance from others, then it should not be done, and cannot be done, and if it is done, then you are running the risk of an unknown retribution from those who assisted.
So, with these in mind, the question of Greenland in the mind of the fucking mentally stunted American is that NATO wasn't valuable anyways, as it "gave us" nothing, and we could've defeated Russia alone anyways, so why was it ever important? And if it was important, it wasn't to our benefit. And if we're being taken advantage of, that's an insult. And it's reasonable to lash out at insults. So there you have it.
To be very clear, despite growing up in this environment, I am disgusted by all of it. Started teaching myself Swedish last year planning to leave, have been sick to my stomach all week (and when this last came up a year ago). I've spent my entire teenage and adult life forming connections to Europeans, my working partner (I do game dev) is French.. Before my wife and I got married, we traveled around the US. This was in the early beginning of the Obama years and we had such a great time. What a fantastic country, great people, nature, culture and I could go on. We agreed that if we ever got any kids, we would take them on a roadtrip across the states. Now they are teenagers and we have the means to travel, but we will not be going to the US - and it pains me. Please fight the good fight, so that we can once again come as visitors to your great country.

As a Dane, any decision about Greenland should be made by Greenland, they have (for quiet sometime now) had the option to decide for themselves if they want to belong to our kingdom or set themselves free. What the world really needs is for the US to get a multiparty system, you have such a diverse population and everything seems so black and white or red/blue, I think that would make a true democracy.
Yes our system was innovative in the 18th and 19th Centuries, but it’s become stale and backwards. George Washington warned that a party system in government would cause horrendous things down the line. He was right but in other ways not. The best counter to that is a multi party system beyond just two. We have other parties but the rules are often stacked against them. The Green Party isn’t even on some ballots in certain states. It’s a mess. A big mess. I feel like we are Ancient Rome in the third century ACE.
The system is broke. The 25th Amendment could be an option and so could an impeachment, but that seems to be wishful thinking. Rank Voting might help to get out of this dysfunctional system?
That’s why the Democrats need a huge win in November. They might get that too as independents are souring on Trump for his behavior, bad economy, and now trying to start wars, something he claimed he was against in the campaign.

Oh, I didn't see it. You're right to be angry, so I get it. I definitely haven't been sounding as pacifistic this past week as I usually try to be. It's just that we're such a tiny country, we're so easy to bully. Our government is fighting it, just not by returning the aggression. The Danish ambassador and the head of Greenland's representation in the US spoke to members of Congress and White House officials a couple of days ago, and the Danish and the Greenlandic ministers of foreign affairs will meet Rubio next week. I could be putting too much faith in him, but I don't think we could find a better fit for this mission than our current minister of foreign affairs. He has an impressive ability to navigate crises that should have ended his political career. Hopefully he'll be able to use that ability for all of us now.
Call me naive, but I think this will open re-negotiations on the existing defense agreement and the US getting even more freedom and access to Greenland rather than military action. We might be able to pull a Canada and convince Trump that he achieved a great deal unlike any in history. Then we can make up some sort of ceremony with our King, who's in pretty good standing in Greenland, to really sell the "historical moment", since Trump loves all of that royal, ceremonial stuff. The King could bring his kids, and somehow highlight that he and the Queen gave the two youngest Greenlandic middle names, just to mark Greenland's place in the Kingdom. The King should be in full military dress and so should the Crown Prince, who's currently serving. We could have used our former special forces King Frederik "Pingo" X much sooner. Basically, our best option right now is diplomatic manipulation.
If it comes down to it, though, Danish soldiers in Greenland have had a default order to immediately return fire in case of an attack since 1952. I hope we won't see how that would play out in reality.
Keep fighting against him domestically. If he realises that this entire thing won't be a political win, he might try to tone down those threat and spin it somehow. But who knows, he's not exactly rational.

Just an FYI, MLK's non-violent protests only worked because they included an implied tangible threat of violence from others such as Malcolm X. MLK won because he was the peaceful alternative that didn't include a new civil war, and even then he was still portrayed as a violent radical at the time. It's fine you don't plan to get involved in violence personally, but I'd really recommend getting ready to support the ones who do.

I agree, I was watching the German film Downfall a week ago about Hitler’s last days and I kept thinking, “This may happen to America, too.” It’s just surreal. I couldn’t imagine this during the Obama years.

I hear this all the time from Americans, and it just shows that people are STILL not aware of the depths of the problem. More than half the voters wanted him BACK after one term. The US is not magically getting a voting percentage of 90 percent. Effectively that means more than half the country.
Also, about 80-90 percent of republicans think he’s doing a great job.
The US is not “on the way” or “or on the brink”, it’s already royally fucked.
Not that is it necessarily you personally, but a lot more than 40% is silent and inactive. When fascism is rising as rapidly as it is in the US right now, silence is complicity. If nothing is done now, you'll get a nice Russian election in 2028, and that approval rating will magically be 95% for Trump's third term, assuming he is somehow alive.

Here's an idea for a protest. We know that your American cities are car centric. So if your protests are to be successful they might have to be car based as well. Get a large amount of buddies together, strap a bunch of large anti Trump banners to your cars. Drive around the suburbs, from strip mall to strip mall, horns blaring. End the trip in a large parking lot where you can socialise and organise.
Make the resistance against Trump visible to all.

Anecdotal perspective; I'm 25, living in Oregon right now (considered "purple" in terms of left/rightism nationally). I grew up in a rural Californian region, which despite California's global reputation, meant I was in a very red area (as is the typical distinction in political leanings, rural vs. urban).
The simplest belief of the average American is that if you don't contribute via work, you do not deserve to be sustained/you do not have rights. This is the driving basis for all decision-making as we see it now - the opinion of the American that has no understanding of history (the vast majority) is in the rumour and reputation of Europe/the world, which is that "the Europeans only live well because we subsidize their military and research", which is a point of resentment. My roommate (28 years old, supremely apathetic until he was forced to vote, now a very confident Republican) directly tells me these beliefs.
This basic "truth" is combined with a cultural worship of individualism in a cowboy/bravado sense - if something cannot be done alone, then it didn't mean anything anyways. The simplistic values of a good life espoused both by American Christianity and by the runoff of 1960s Westerns, 70s Vietnam, 80s action heroes, and 90s Wallstreet are that personal success is the key to relaxation, to peace, and to meaning. Money solves problems - life is a series of problems - money is the most efficient pursuit of a good life. Get rich first, buy solutions later. To be dependent on others is an embarrassment and an emasculation - a lack of self-dependency is the mark of a failure. Conversely, if a task would require charitable assistance from others, then it should not be done, and cannot be done, and if it is done, then you are running the risk of an unknown retribution from those who assisted.
So, with these in mind, the question of Greenland in the mind of the fucking mentally stunted American is that NATO wasn't valuable anyways, as it "gave us" nothing, and we could've defeated Russia alone anyways, so why was it ever important? And if it was important, it wasn't to our benefit. And if we're being taken advantage of, that's an insult. And it's reasonable to lash out at insults. So there you have it.
To be very clear, despite growing up in this environment, I am disgusted by all of it. Started teaching myself Swedish last year planning to leave, have been sick to my stomach all week (and when this last came up a year ago). I've spent my entire teenage and adult life forming connections to Europeans, my working partner (I do game dev) is French.. I know what I'll have to do if it comes down to it, but I'm just sick thinking about it. Sorry.

Before my wife and I got married, we traveled around the US. This was in the early beginning of the Obama years and we had such a great time. What a fantastic country, great people, nature, culture and I could go on. We agreed that if we ever got any kids, we would take them on a roadtrip across the states. Now they are teenagers and we have the means to travel, but we will not be going to the US - and it pains me. Please fight the good fight, so that we can once again come as visitors to your great country.

As a Dane, any decision about Greenland should be made by Greenland, they have (for quiet sometime now) had the option to decide for themselves if they want to belong to our kingdom or set themselves free. What the world really needs is for the US to get a multiparty system, you have such a diverse population and everything seems so black and white or red/blue, I think that would make a true democracy.
Yes our system was innovative in the 18th and 19th Centuries, but it’s become stale and backwards. George Washington warned that a party system in government would cause horrendous things down the line. He was right but in other ways not. The best counter to that is a multi party system beyond just two. We have other parties but the rules are often stacked against them. The Green Party isn’t even on some ballots in certain states. It’s a mess. A big mess. I feel like we are Ancient Rome in the third century ACE.
