• Survival instincts in the negatives.

Makes me wonder if it has early CWD, but even healthy deer are really stupid.

  • They are so unbelievably soft though.

Boyfriend hunts to fill the freezer, and I opted to skin and tan the hide of the last one brought home.

For the commenters saying ticks, y'all, it's SO bad. 😭 I was going through the hide with a flea comb after it sat salted in our shed all winter, and I could not believe the amount of bugs that I pulled off of it.

  • Ticks.

It's not like he's cuddling with the deer.  You can just look at your hand after this and pick off any ticks.

Ticks can be as small as a poppy seed, and they move fast. Deer have a lot of ticks - that's a big part of why Lyme disease and alpha-gal syndrome (beef allergy) have become more common. No thanks, I don't have any urge to pet any deer. Edit to add - there are lone star ticks feeding on deer over almost half the US now. Lone star ticks move a lot faster than the dog or deer ticks people are familiar with.

Thank you for mentioning lone star ticks. Deer ticks and Lyme disease are no joke though. I had a brutal experience a few months ago that involved months of excruciating misery and wrecking my kidneys because after spending weeks in and out of the hospital nobody thought to test me for Lymes until after months of suffering. They kept testing me for gout because my knees were the size of cantaloups/watermelons and I was in so much pain… but it was Lymes and now I have Lyme arthritis in my knees.

Edit: I’ve mostly recovered but I’ve never been so scared/hopeless/alone in my life. 0/10 do NOT recommend. Check thoroughly for ticks, folks. Every day.

So how have people dealt with cleaning deer since time immemorial? Do they sense as soon as the deer is dead and leave?

I'm not sure everyone knows or cares if they were bitten by a tick. In the link below a guy in New Jersey got bit by what he thought were "chiggers" but they were tiny, young, lone star ticks. He later died suddenly from an allergic reaction to beef. More people are getting the beef allergy from lone star ticks, but this is the first guy known to have died from it. He never knew he was bitten by a tick.

Tell me you have never seen a tick without telling me you have never seen a tick.

Ticks can be as small as a poppy seed, and they move fast. You may have seen ticks before, but that doesn't mean you saw all of them. Edit to add - there are lone star ticks over almost half the country now. Lone star ticks move a lot faster than dog or deer ticks, and they feed on deer all over their range.

    Yea like, ew.

  • This dudes an idiot.

  • This is why you stay up wind of deer when hunting, they never know you’re there /s
