Howdy deer-mockers! There've been a couple posts of fictional deer stupidity here. Some people love 'em, some people hate 'em, and now we've got post flairs so that y'all can differentiate between the two:
- If you're posting an instance of an actual deer being fucking stupid, please use the "genuine deer stupidity" flair
- If you're posting an instance of a fake deer (cartoon, 3D modeled, AI-generated, etc.) being fucking stupid, please use the "fictional deer stupidity" flair
Feel free to reply with other flair ideas for posts (and for users; I wanna get that going, too).
Can we get a flair for people are fucking stupid? For the ones who don't post deer being stupid. The name of the damn sub?
I really think we should just ban AI. Nobody’s here for fictional content.
People are here for actual deer being actually stupid. It’s evident everywhere, there is no shortage of new material.
Thanks.
I fully agree. I agree with the two proposed categories, I just think that AI-generated content should be in neither.
The AI post is already the most upvoted post this week, and it's only a couple hours old. It seems more people are here for fictional content than dashcam footage, at the very least.
But yeah, I get that it ain't everyone's cup of tea. That's where the flairs come in: to filter out the fictional content and only get the real deal.
Hey, this is because we let the sub misinform its users. People weren't paying attention, and now they're worse off.
I work with AI all day, I'm a researcher. I program it myself. This is not good policy, and it's not good for the sub.
Shall I start posting DALL-E deer and see how it goes over?
I'd agree with you if this was a deluge of AI posts, rather than what so far seems to be a one-off thing. For now, this doesn't seem any worse (or better) than any other sort of CGI.
If it becomes a significant problem then we'll ban it, like with the "no asking car advice" rule. Otherwise, I prefer to keep the moderation touch as light as possible.
People don't want this for the sub and I'm not sure why you're doing it.
edit: Make a poll, put it to a vote. Nobody wants this policy.
That sounds great, but Reddit is known for not showing everyone polls. I've found polls I would have voted in AFTER they're closed and the decision decided.
And particularly with AI you see a huge amount of outside sub voters come rolling in so it's hard to judge what the sub ACTUALLY wants and not just a bunch of people really invested in AI.
Speak for yourself. I don’t really care about this decision. It is not a threat.

I dont mean to be too much of a dick to the mods since they do thankless work, but yes this is not the way.
Calling this misinformation is a HUGE stretch. This is not a scientific or educational subreddit, this is a subreddit that is intended for humor and entertainment purposes. I have discussed this with the other moderator and we agreed that it's too early to ban AI posts after only a single instance. We understand your concerns, and your concerns are valid. We intend for this subreddit to remain light-hearted and funny, and that post was funny as fuck. We will not allow this subreddit to become an unhinged AI fuck fest.
Passing fake content as real is ontologically misinformation. It’s not a stretch, it’s a fact. We’re arguing about how important that is to you. We already know whether it’s important to me, and by the comment ratios we can infer whether it’s important to the community.
There’s a there’s a vanishingly small minority who are happier with AI. There are a few people who are indifferent. The rest prefer it be disallowed.
Do what you will, it’s the wrong call.
You're taking a post on a subreddit called r/deerarefuckingstupid way too seriously. There are more important things in life
It's the principle of the thing.
We have already told you our thoughts on this. continuing to argue is not going to change our minds. Subscribing to this subreddit is voluntary.
I don't have to, you can analyze it for yourself in the comments of that post.
The disclaimer that it's AI made it to the top. That's because your sub took the most actions in agreement. Statistically, action is most powerfully driven by the emotion of outrage, it's a foundation of virality. Humor is a weaker motivator - this info from Jonah Berger's acclaimed best-seller "Contageous." The post reached the top because of humor. The comment reached the top because of outrage and social currency gain.
Here's an ad hominem. Changing one's mind publicly is rare and unsettling, famously evidenced by Monty Hall. You don't know me, you've publicly committed to the decision (within a day and without input, btw), and now there's risk to reversing it. See some papers I guess, linked below. Could have sworn there were other books on that one, maybe some stuff in "Influence" by Rob Caldini, but don't quote me.

The truth is that the mods jumped the wrong way today, and now it'll be evidenced with *flair on every post, every day, in perpetuity* long past the relevance of this post. People will walk into the sub and their first impression will be "wait, is what's this flair?"
Otherwise I'd just recommend you rise above the issue and ban AI like the majority of users undoubtedly actually want, and the majority of subs are doing. *Just ask them*, it's not complicated.
If you want me to unsub then just say so, man.
Pretty sure the principle that passing off fake content as real is ontologically misinformation is epistemic nonsense in this case champ
I think removing AI is still a good call. I know it's not an informational sub, but I would feel better knowing that things are real because I live in an area where deer actually are a hazard and seeing other people's encounters helps.
I agree that this was probably only because people thought it was real.
Thank you. I appreciate when something is actually labeled as AI so I don’t have to guess
I would guess it was upvoted by people flying through and not paying attention to the fact it’s AI. You should use that flair as bait and ban every account that uses it. (Only half joking)
Obscure internet communities don’t have to be a democracy. Curate the content for who engages not just who upvotes without a second thought

Equating a funny video of deer on a trampoline to "disinformation" is a bit extreme.
Like I and the other mod have both said: if the AI posts become an actual problem then we'll cull 'em, or even ban 'em entirely like with the car advice posts. Until then, it's extreme to drop the banhammer over what's so far been a single post.

We're not removing one AI post because we haven't banned it yet. I understand everyone's concerns, but it's not a problem yet. If it does become a problem we will take action.
Don’t mind me, just commenting for a post flair.
I feel like I should go notify my furry compatriots and see how the sub reacts to suddenly furries everywhere for the fake deer tag.
I love this sub, I'm never fucking leaving
This is a good idea. I concur!
ETA: Like someone else said in the comments, I for one just see funny/interesting post, upvote then move on. It’s not that deep for me. This is Reddit.
