I mean, that was definitely an original deck and it most certainly was built to code at the time. The braces look temporary and likely a short term fix while repairs are being permitted and planned. IMHO.
Well, here’s the thing you don’t know when that deck was built so you don’t know if it was built to code when it was built because you don’t know when it was built so there’s always that and if you know when it was built, when was it built? We’re waiting for you to tell us when it was built.
Hard to make sense of that word salad. You are assuming that they what, DIY’d that to include the stone clad pillars, the metal roof, and a fireplace? That is one enormously preposterous assumption.
Nah if you zoom in you can see the split in the caps. They likely go all the way down but they should have used steel at this point also they look like 6x6 but thats still probably underengendered
Edit: im aware of the typo but im leaving it cause its funny
This region is for sure the hot tub on deck capital of the world. Kinda nuts you can look at this picture and just know it’s either here, Gatlinburg or a surrounding town.
Anytime I see super high and sketchy decks, I assume the same. It's the capital of sketchy decks and houses built where you really shouldn't build either.
I downloaded the pictures(because reddit doesn't let you zoom in easily) and I swear if you zoom in on any random point on the deck, you will find something new wrong. Mainly, NOTHING is square. I have serious doubts that the footings for the pillars are correct, and the hottub is DEFINITELY a major issue.
Serious question: I see these popping up on this sub in places like Seviervelle and Gatlinburg all the time. Do they not require permits for decks in that area?
They learned how many corner boxes it cost to do the first column which was their Cadillac option... so they quit with the others.... then they stacked a huge stone fireplace on air 😆 🤣 no one will notice
Should have used stainless steel cables if they needed something after the fact. At least they would disappear from view and not look like a sore thumb
I've stayed in these before and was bothered by the deck construction. Granted I also have anxiety and get nervous about a lot of things but this doesn't help.
🤔 I’m no structural engineer but, those 4X4’s on the back are holding up the roof line, & the deck with the stone fireplace, look very underpowered. Let’s hope it doesn’t snow ❄️ 😬
I am from this area, play in Real estate, I'm not a State inspector or tattle tale... But sometimes you see some things that really make you shake your head.... The labor force in the area is slowly changing to unskilled labor when it comes to construction, 20 years from now your going to hear about a lot of these cabins porches failing, you can see it on the new builds in the area...and this one looks relatively new
Even though I’ve never lived there,my family was the first white people/non Native American people in the area. Family place was on Gandy creek. I never personally lived there but still cool family history
If I remember from my material science class.. 2x4 will hold roughly a thousand pounds vertically(8 ft stick). A 2x6 is more than double that. I think a 4x4 was about 4,300 lb depending on species... 6x6 is it serious piece of lumber and will hold at least 10K.
Tennessee has an unlicensed contractor problem. Not surprised. Shitty to think about what it is going to take for people to give a fuck about permits in this state.
Seems like the braces were added after construction to stop buckling and are not properly placed.
I mean, that was definitely an original deck and it most certainly was built to code at the time. The braces look temporary and likely a short term fix while repairs are being permitted and planned. IMHO.
Yup

No, I said you don’t know when it was built so you don’t know what the code was when they built it and do you understand English
It’s a work of art. We are not supposed to understand.
Was the property graded at All?
These are literally built onto the side of a mountain. I've stayed here before I'm sure of it.
Had some lumber left over at the end of building the deck and thought they'd add some strength to the posts. That baby isn't going anywhere.
Sneaky hot tub behind the pillar
Damn I was joking but the crazy sumbiches actually did it lol
Put on the lower level, must be designed to absorb shocks from earthquakes.
r/findthesniper
That corner post is running for the exit
Are those 4x4 just sitting on capped 'columns'???
Nah if you zoom in you can see the split in the caps. They likely go all the way down but they should have used steel at this point also they look like 6x6 but thats still probably underengendered
Edit: im aware of the typo but im leaving it cause its funny
underjerryrigged…
Exactly
Also underengineered as well..
Lmao yeah
Those are not 4 x 4’s. Those are six by sixes but try again.
This region is for sure the hot tub on deck capital of the world. Kinda nuts you can look at this picture and just know it’s either here, Gatlinburg or a surrounding town.
Or the swimming pool under the main floor that's supported by the "deck"
Anytime I see super high and sketchy decks, I assume the same. It's the capital of sketchy decks and houses built where you really shouldn't build either.
I'm almost a thousand miles away and just looking at that is giving me anxiety. 🤣🤣🤣
A stone fireplace has to weigh at least a hot tub and a half.
An un-exhausted stone fireplace.
It is so... so scary
Replace with steel
This is r/Decks…everyone is afraid of steel
“Craftsman” cottage
Terrifying. Those masonry columns seem WAY too slender, as do the posts. I would not have a party on there
FailArmy awaits.
I wonder how much that fireplace weighs

Think I'll sit outside on the hill with a beer and just look at that thing.
You can’t span 6x6 posts that tall no matter what the tributary load is. Thats just crazy!
thats just dumb
It'll be fine just as long as someone slapped one of the braces after installation and said "this ain't going anywhere"
Pretty sure some people will be disappointed (and dead) when those posts slip off the "supports"
Inspector was blind perhaps?
What inspector ??
The posts are trembling
Incredible views. But the ride down the mountain is going to be wild.
iddle hold
Serious question: I see these popping up on this sub in places like Seviervelle and Gatlinburg all the time. Do they not require permits for decks in that area?
That's...going to fall down....sooner than it should.
I cant help but notice the rock wall (fireplace?) Sitting on top of 4 lonely posts.
It’s holding a fireplace, which is kind of like a hot tub. It’s going to be wild if they have a big fire going when she finally goes down.
They learned how many corner boxes it cost to do the first column which was their Cadillac option... so they quit with the others.... then they stacked a huge stone fireplace on air 😆 🤣 no one will notice
Holy hell!
disaster waiting to happen
When dumb money meets dumb builders
Why don’t we read about these failing Regularly? They all look like shit and are starting to age…
Because the people they fail on are ☠️
Looks like a good place for a hot tub
McChalets gonna McChalet……
lol when you just need a porch added to your porch.
No hot tub for you!
Just kidding, ofcourse there is one on the bottom deck!!!
Amazing.
Did the customer request an extension of the upper deck during construction??? This makes no sense…
Somebody could get sevierly injured.
Weird seeing the scene of a horrible accident before it happens.
That’s for sure not in earthquake country. At least I hope not.
Is this an Airbnb? I think we had a class trip booked here pre-Covid
I'm beginning to think there just might be no rules
Never skip leg day
😬
Had they left the cross support off it would've been visible passable 😂
Should have used stainless steel cables if they needed something after the fact. At least they would disappear from view and not look like a sore thumb
Someone gonna die on that thing
🫣
I've stayed in these before and was bothered by the deck construction. Granted I also have anxiety and get nervous about a lot of things but this doesn't help.
Get a couple hot tubs on that thing, Stat!
A lawyers dream!
A good breeze would have buckled those puny posts.
That’s some big deck energy.
Probably just bracing for a hot tub.
🤔 I’m no structural engineer but, those 4X4’s on the back are holding up the roof line, & the deck with the stone fireplace, look very underpowered. Let’s hope it doesn’t snow ❄️ 😬
This is insane lol
Not a builder, contractor or anything residential housing construction related but Oh. My. God. I wouldn’t let a sparrow land on that upper deck.
I am from this area, play in Real estate, I'm not a State inspector or tattle tale... But sometimes you see some things that really make you shake your head.... The labor force in the area is slowly changing to unskilled labor when it comes to construction, 20 years from now your going to hear about a lot of these cabins porches failing, you can see it on the new builds in the area...and this one looks relatively new
Beautiful home then you looked outback 😳 i would have to question everything in this house .
I see this all the time in Sevier County and Cocke County.
A couple of more “X” braces and we’ll be good to go.
To reduce housing costs, all new construction will have no need of inspections because, well, trust us bro.
On a side note, I stayed there on vacation once. It’s a beautiful place.
"I don't need no architect to design a stupid deck extension"
Stone fireplace on top,or wooden deck? Why.
This is garbage. Posts are undersized. God only knows how things are anchored and what kind of fasteners are used. Bracing??? Hot tub???
Wait till you zoom in 😬😬😬
Will that deck hold a hot tub....along with that fire place?
"No thanks Uncle Bob, I don't want to sleep on the porch tonight. Or ever."
Have a nice trip. See you next fall
That gutter downspout is amazing
Top deck = The Last Supper
It’s that classy/hillbilly mix that gives it its charm.
Where’s the hot tub?
Don’t invite Dolly on that deck, looks too heavy
That's code. What u talking bout.
Imagine paying hundreds of thousands of dollars for a house like this
I've never seen a well built home in my life but some of the most hack jury rigged houses and garage sand barns I've seen have been in TN
Even though I’ve never lived there,my family was the first white people/non Native American people in the area. Family place was on Gandy creek. I never personally lived there but still cool family history
“You don’t know if it was built to code” - seems you don’t understand how to write or read English to me.
Also you can see the concrete on the pillars is fairly newish, and siding and roof look newer so going to go with sometime in the past 15 years.
Why is this area of the country the epicenter of dangerous decks? Is there a permit required and plan review?
How in the world did we survive before the 6x6 craze….
I’d be afraid to go out on that bad boy!
That’s an awesome 😎 deck
https://share.google/KAg9jCH2GjFLAwQOD
Look again.
Jesus you can see the columns buckling towards the house. Wouldn’t properly hold the weight of the roof let alone deck and chimney
That's a beautiful deck, but it seems someone didn't know what they were doing when they built it. These posts are not strong enough for that deck.
A 4x4 will hold about 6-10k pounds
Its more than strong enough, it just wasn't built right
They couldnt even land the posts center on those piers
I’d be concerned about how much that fireplace weighs. Won’t clear 10k lbs, but the tributary load doesn’t look right
If I remember from my material science class.. 2x4 will hold roughly a thousand pounds vertically(8 ft stick). A 2x6 is more than double that. I think a 4x4 was about 4,300 lb depending on species... 6x6 is it serious piece of lumber and will hold at least 10K.
I just want to say, this is why the building code exists. Someone has to protect stupid people.
Tennessee has an unlicensed contractor problem. Not surprised. Shitty to think about what it is going to take for people to give a fuck about permits in this state.
It’s totally fine, it was designed by AI, so you know it’s good and safe.
