So I’m super new to DayZ, I have about 8 hours in total but that was the best gear and kit I’ve had so far! Today I learned how to make a fishing pole and cook in a fireplace, It’s the small things but after dying of hunger every time this is a massive win for me. Sadly as I was thinking about settling down to become a fisherman I was shot dead by another player. “All roads lead back to the coast” - Some random dude on the internet whose comment I’m sure he stole too. It does mean that I’m more prepared for this time around!

Fishermen are cool af
Agreed 🤌🏼
Learning how to cook and fish are game changers, some of the most reliable ways of getting food.
You’re not wrong! Having died from starvation countless times, seeing how much just one piece of fish fills you up it will now be my go to!
Fruit is meta tbh. But only works on chernarus
It depends honestly, fruit only spawns after a certain point after players are nearby. On low pop servers it’s hard to find fruit unless you just hang around for 10 minutes and wait for more to spawn, might as well fish or find some food at that point.
Go by orchard and set fish traps on your way in town. Then swing back by after looting. You'll never run out of food like this.
Wow I didn’t know you could make fishing traps! This game is amazing!
I disagree.. usually it's more like 5 minutes to get a good amount of fruits, and in the meanwhile you can hit the water pump, or loot some houses nearby. But these are preferences after all
I never have luck finding fruit, also the strategy doesnt work at all on Livonia and Sakhal. My advice is, other than fishing, clearing all the zombies in a town is a pretty quick way of finding some food. This method is even usable after you leave the coast and pretty much all tier areas in the game, just a bit more difficult in military areas.
do you know if it's more likely for the infected to drop loot the higher the tier?
I don’t feel a difference but i never did a wobo test
I am simple man. I make hidden woodland base. I go fish. I happy.
Base building is on the list but maybe a little bit advanced at the moment. The idea of living a simple life in the chaos is very appealing!
I built my first ever base after 700hrs of game play (check it out here) it lasted about a fortnight before getting raided, any base inside an already existing structure will be found very soon and eventually raided, I prefer to go for improvised shelters as mentioned in my previous comment/reply, it keeps the loot hidden and you genuinely don’t need that much storage, if you put 6 wooden crates inside an improvised shelters as mentioned you have 400 slots of storage which is plenty for a solo, you can also combine two improvised shelters facing each other at a slight angle to allow for entry on one of the corners and place another 6 crates in the second one for a total of 800 slots if you find that your hoarding a bunch of loot but let’s be honest…what do you really NEED in order to survive out in the wild? Not that much tbh maybe some back up repair kits and fishing gear.
The best part is if anyone does find this sort of base and there isn’t much high tier loot inside they’ll probably leave it alone after maybe taking a couple items, the only thing you’d need to be worried about is them coming back to the shelter when you’re online after they’ve found it, some people like to do something i call “Rodenting” where they’ll find your exposed shelter, come back and pinch ammo and medical supplies off you every now and then, I guess it’s better than getting raided but it sure does suck haha all the best mate glad you’re enjoying the game and honestly well done on clearing the hurdle that is starvation, Youre onto a great path and you understand that DayZ is about rinse and repeat, you’ve learned in this life things that will benefit you in the next one, all the best champ!
No way, you had a flag that’s brilliant! Wow that certainly is a lot of storage, I can’t see me needing all that but great to know if I ever get a duo. Your knowledge on this game is crazy, thank you so much for your guidance and help.
Yeah I just admit it did suck to start off with I’d get some cool gear then die again and again but as you said I kept learning more things for each run
Haha honestly I still have things to learn myself but thanks and Youre most Levine for the support, not everyone is friendly as Im sure you’ve found out but I always try to help where I can.
Yeah the flag was effort and so was the fire stove inside, went through so many tools gathering the stones haha, Im only reaching 750 hrs now but it’s defo one of my favourite games ever made z sure it has its bugs and glitches but when stuff works out and Youre say around a fire cooking some meat you had to hunt for it sorta all falls into place.
I would suggest watching a few YouTubers that give general advice like FreshSpawns and AR-K
Edit: Top Tip! When you spawn fresh find a water well/pump, drink until you get the stomach icon appear next to the water, wait 5 mins and drink again, do this over and over until the symbol is fully white, then aim to do the same thing with the hunger bar, admittedly it’s a lot harder to fill up food in my opinion off the coast but if you fill both before leaving the first town you dont have to worry about it for quiet some time, and at that point you’ll be fishing ;)
Me and this guy gave each other a heart attack today but we ended up making up and he taught me how to fish and cook food. Cool guy
Love that! The community in this game is amazing!
I got a friend that played this game for fishing. He loved it so much and do nothing else but fishing. I showed him rdr2 fishing as well then now, I noticed he been playing a bunch of fishing games sim
Bro is a born fisherman 🫡
On chernarus I just hang around some fruit trees and the water pump at spawn and then I’m good for a long time. On chernarus it’s easy to survive . Almost to easy
Thats why I play Livonia, I like to get wet every 10 minutes from the constant rain :)
The bright blue backpack probably made you stick out like a sore thumb, try to find a burlap sack and a rope when you start out to craft a burlap courier bag, if you can’t find rope combine 12 rags to make 1 rope, you’ll also need 3 small sticks once you craft the sack and rope together to expand the storage a little bit more, it’s my go to bag and honestly I don’t even drop it end game as the weight of a plate carrier doesn’t allow you to carry much anyway.
I done a full no mad run once avoiding PVP, hunting for food and fishing, cooking everything in my improvised shelter with a gas stove, frying pan & gas canister, i lasted about a month until I got greedy and built one garden plot nearby obviously giving away my position, I’ll defo be doing it again after seeing this post.
I only had a Mosin and an SG5K with a MKII, this time Im going to go for a Crossbow, USG and MKII
Edit: you can also make snare traps with some small sticks and a metal wire, put a worm inside as bait and you’ll “automatically” catch chickens for feathers for making improvised bolts
Wow this is great advice! Thank you very much! I didn’t even think about the glaring blue rucksack being a problem but of course it was haha, I have a red one this time around so that needs to go!
There’s so many things I didn’t know you could make in this game!
You’re welcome! If you’re going for the no mad play style you can eventually kill a deer or cow or goat and get some leather hide, you’ll need Garden Lime found in sheds and a leather sewing kit but you can then make a bigger backpack with I think 56 slots rather than the 35 you get from the courier burlap sack by combining 2 tanned leather with the sewing kit, it’s brown and I think waterproof but dont quote me on that, it’s the path I usually go for storage.
You won’t need a plate carrier if you’re hiding in the woods although it does help out, I’d consider going for a ghillie run by finding an assault vest alongside a buttpack, it means you can have a ghillie suit on your backpack slot and still be able to have storage on the vest instead while remaining camouflaged.
You can also make improvised shelters using sticks with 100 storage slots inside, the stick ones are my go to as they’re camouflaged and blend in with the environment, a useful tip is to find a bush cluster of maybe 2/3 dense bushes, chop them down and build the shelter where the bush was, when the server resets the bushes will pop back up and you can walk through them to the inside of your shelter remaining covered and concealed, you can also store up to 6 wooden crates inside the shelter alongside barrels for cooking on, you can make a oil barrel into a fire barrel with a screwdriver or knife tho keep in mind this usually ruins your blade however theyre great as dont produce smoke when cooking and you can always leave the top open to gather rainwater which is fresh to drink and will not kill you :)
Edit: welcome to DayZ!!!
Forgot to say in order to make a ghillie you need netting and burlap strips which you get from cutting up the burlap sacks and finding netting in sheds and industrial areas, you will need a bunch of it tho Im not gunna lie, you can look up the crafting recipe online but I prefer to hit military zones and Heli crashes in the night when no one else is online and loot around for one, it’s much easier than crafting one from scratch but if you find enough netting and burlap then why not make one!
Mate you’re amazing! I can’t thank you enough for the help! The DayZ community really is fantastic. I didn’t know your bases stayed when the server resets, I thought I was a complete wipe so that’s great to know as that’s what was putting me off base building.
Eventually you will learn how to properly loot. If you're struggling for food zombies drop it quite often and cars can spawn snacks.
Oh I didn’t know that, I have been avoiding confrontation unless needed ie if they have a backpack or woolly hat and so on. That’s great to know, thank you very much!
Yep. On livonia and chernarus if you just punch zombies and loot nothing else you can theoretically survive forever. Sakhal is the only map which actually makes you survive.
I've never been lucky enough to pull up on someone while they're fishing. Maybe I should just camp by a pond and wait
I’d rather you didn’t 😂 I’m tryna live a simple life
In taking time to learn actual game skills... you are well on your way to becoming a silent terror in some obscure corner of the map. God speed!
If you play Livonia it’s even easier, many lakes and you can use the tall grass to hide
well oh wow i just fucked them all off thats easy. >:D
duh! im not your home boy. -_-
