I know this has been posted relatively recently. I’m having a thing (hard time—managing self harm/loathing) and need to post about how much this movie is so important to me.

I love it so much.

On a slightly lighter note… couldn’t stand Christian bale until this movie (now love him) because my much younger siblings watched Newsies everyday for forever years before this movie came out. (Just got sick of it.) now love him obviously.

Please don’t comment with negative stuff about me and my need for the movie. Coolsies if the movie isn’t your thing. But I’m a 48yo queer cis woman… been around the block so to speak… this movie is my safe place! Thanks for letting me share!

  • Also love that Izzard is in this movie right around Dressed to Kill. My teenagers even quote that stand up with me!

Dressed To Kill is probably in my top 10 stand up specials of all time. Not only is Eddie hilarious (of course), but from a comedy nerd's perspective, it's just brilliantly constructed, with every bit leading naturally to the next while also utilizing callbacks to keep the laughs coming while building momentum into the next bit.

Besides which, there probably is not a week that goes by where I don't just randomly think "I've got legs", "running, jumping, climbing trees", or "Church of England - cake or death?"

So many of everything you posted! And more!

It’s literally my top three if not my top (but that may be in part due to nostalgia and more importantly bff of nearly 40 years connection).

Also.. “did I leave the gas on? No I’m a fucking squirrel!”

    And so many more

  • I get it ! This soundtrack is one of my go tos when I’m feeling down . This time of the year can be pretty rough . You got this !

Thank you! I love the soundtrack. And I think it’s actually a great thing that Bowie didn’t let them use his music. I feel like it lets the fantasy hit home even more.

But again thank you! I appreciate you so much right now

  • It’s a comfort watch for me too. Be kind to yourself, sending love ❤️

    Thank you!

    Thank you!

    You're welcome!

  • This movie and the whole - Christian Bale’s character imagining standing in the living room pointing to the TV with Maxwell Demon on it - screaming for his parents to see him “That’s Me!” - is so cathartic I almost can’t watch it anymore. And my love of Bowie starting at age 10- through today at 52 - was definitely part of my queer and art awakening - as it was for so many. The film is flawed, but I love it unapologetically.

  • Check out Swing Kids. It’s about swing dancing against nazis. Good Christian bale.

Oh totally watched this and was a fan through high school! Very well acquainted! Thank you!

Oh also To share a story

Had the soundtrack blasting in my car in high school. Having a great time with my friends. Stopped at a red light. Some dick felt it necessary to come up to us stopped at the light and try to shame us for having a good time listening to swing in my car (and I was obviously punk). Needless to say i shut that idiot down for trying to shame us

Brian Slade looks over in all my work zoom meetings. Also you don't have to justify it. And honestly it's wild to try. Trust me, I found a group of friends and only one other person saw the film. Both of us were obsessed and we swore we would do a movie night with the friend group. We spent half the movie telling them useless trivia, pointing out who was supposed to represent who and the other half justifying the more absurd parts of the film (the barbies...the space ship etc.) We had a blast but our friends looked at us like we were nuts

I can SO relate! Just did that with my husband yet again who has heard it a million times.

Also planning yet another movie night with my teenagers….

Maybe Rocky (which we’ve done since my youngest was in kindergarten as Magenta), Velvet Goldmine, and Hedwig (oldest is trans and youngest is “whatever”—their term)

I love that! What a great line up for a movie Marathon! Rocky is also very close to my heart (it's how my husband and I met XD)

  • Back when ya still had to rent movies from the video store, I signed up for a rental account just to watch this movie. Would rent it to show to friends. Two years later, the clerk at the store pointed out to me that, in two years, I had only ever rented Velvet Goldmine.

Ha! And that’s exactly why I simply bought it on VHS! LOVE YOU

  • It's been decades since I've watched this film, and remember enjoying it. I should rewatch it.

  • My older gay brother, the person who introduced me to Bowie and other cool music coming out in the early 70’s told me that when he first saw Velvet Goldmine, the scene where Christian Bale’s character is yelling “That’s Me!” while watching the Bowie character on TV, brought him to tears because that is exactly how artists like Bowie, Roxy Music Brian Eno…etc made him feel when he first saw them. As a confused teen, he felt like he found music and artists that he could relate to.

  • I'm about the same age. I was at a really low point at the time the movie came out, in college. I was also cutting. I saw it in the theater and it saved my life. The power of reinvention, belief in yourself, and the optimism really moved me. It changed my life. I listened non stop to the soundtrack.

    It is redemptive.

  • Probably my favorite movie as well, I've shown it to many new friends over the years. Some enjoyed it but didn't really get it and one wanted to stop after the first fifteen minutes lol
