I have a Toyota Yaris Hybrid from 2018 and want to buy a dashcam. However, on internet I read that this would not preferred, because of the hybrid battery. The continious recording (power) would damage the battery. The 'normal' battery would be too small.

In what extend is this true. Does this mean I cannot attach a dashcam with 24/7 recording? I want to use a hardwire kit.

I don't have a dashcam yet, so suggestions are also welcome. I want a front and rear cam. Preferably with no lcd screen and a micro sd card.

  • It's a struggle to get 24 recording with a standard size vehicle battery with most cams.

As long as you are using a half decent camera with built in voltage monitoring (i.e. Thinkware or Blackvue) you won't damage your vehicle battery.

Thinkware has radar options that can work around that, but installing a larger vehicle battery, a second vehicle battery, or using a dash cam battery pack are also options for your Yaris.

That's awesome! Did not know such info. But I want a simple (cheap) installation, so I will pass on the batteries as they are expensive.

Maybe I will just record when driving then.

  • Because of the small 12v battery, I would opt in or consider a dedicated dashcam battery. A 7500mah-8000mah is my go to size. A battery of that size paired with my Thinkware U3000 has given me upwards of 35 hours of parking mode on a full charge.

Thanks for the advice. I see that those battery packs are very expensive. Which one do you have?

That'll be a personal choice. For me my car sits for more than 12 hrs at a time and I get much more than that with a cellink neo 8

  • I had the same concern when I got a hybrid a while back. I wanted a front and rear dashcam with no screen and microSD storage, but I worried about draining the battery. Ended up going with a low-power hardwired setup that only records in parking mode when it detects motion.

It’s been great covers both front and rear, discreet, and I don’t have to worry about killing the battery. Honestly, with the voltage cutoff and motion detection, it feels like the perfect balance between coverage and keeping the hybrid safe.

That's great advice! I'll definitely need a voltage cutoff, just to be sure. Which dashcam you ended up buying?
