Hoffman said Tanzanian authorities informed her by email on Monday that they had conducted an autopsy, but didn’t immediately provide a cause of death.

They were renting an underwater cabin which has an observation chamber 10 meters (33ft) below the surface. She was inside the chamber and he dove all the way down to the window to propose using a note. Ran out of air before making it to the surface.
10m is trivial for free diving if you have experience. Unfortunately, free diving is inherently dangerous and it can go south in a moment if you screw anything up.
I don't think he was stupid, he probably had done this many times before, but he either stayed down too long, got a cramp, or made some error with equalisation or the like which caused him to become disoriented. He may also have over-exerted himself doing the proposal, as you have to conserve muscle energy and oxygen as much as possible. That's just my guess.
I free dive a bit, not seriously, and I wouldn't go down to 10m yet. Maybe 6m, and only for a matter of seconds - not long enough for a marriage proposal! I don't have the experience for it. This guy believed he did.
I caught a cramp in seven feet of water, then my other leg cramped. There was literally nothing I could do to save myself. The pain was too intense for me to even think about floating on my back. If my buddy wasn't only 10 feet away, I probably would have kicked it.
Man... Thats rough. I've been in a couple really scary scenarios underwater. None where I wasn't being hindered by someone else. The idea of dying during the most important moment of your life is just so sad.
Sure, he was free diving to do the proposal and drowned. That isn't enough, though. Since they were staying where they were staying, one can assume that they liked to do stuff like this and he would be prepared. He just had a complication.
This doesn't win a DA anymore than a guy proposing on a hike who loses his footing and dies would. It's just a sad accident, not a Darwin.
He died in a slightly unusual way. Ut the guy wasn't a moron. He just had an accident while doing something dangerous. It wasn't even a stupid something, since freediving 10m is pretty common. As I read it, he was even wearing fins to help him move quickly.
Sure, he's out of the gene pool, but it wasn't for excessive stupidity.
Hos girlfriend as recording it. She knew. One would think that they had done something like this before since it's their third day, this time there was a complication.

Sometimes, love makes us do stupid things. This is one of them.
Just a hunch but I think he might have drowned.
Saw this video over 5 years ago. Hopefully he's learnt his lesson by now.
I have a sinking feeling
Dont hold your breath.
It's all water under the bridge now

Holy fucking shit! 30ft underwater without diving equipment? Sounds dumb as shit
It's not that dangerous with fins if you're a decent swimmer.. but from the video you can clearly tell he isnt
Yeah, I came back here to point out he isn't even kicking properly
Yeah, 30 feet isn't hard with fins if you know what you're doing.
But like skiing, if you've never done it before, you probably shouldn't hit the black diamond trails on your first day.
Incredibly sad and stupid
Till death do us part
dies
*depth
It seemed like a good idea at the time.
Sounds like he was in over his head
I laughed so hard I farted
I farted so hard I laughed
What an achievement! I farted so hard I sharted
Him: I want to spend the rest of my life with you.
Her: Well, that was over much sooner than I expected.
Guy watching from the shore: That's what she said.
You: Too much internet.

"I can't hold my breath long enough to tell you everything I love about you"
...ouch, such vicious irony...
well he spent the rest of his life with her....
"Costing $US1,700-a-night (£1,300)...."
Damn.
It's wild to me that people spend $1700 so casually like that. Fucks sake I feel guilty after spending $90 yesterday
So what was the issue? What caused him to drown? I didn't read it all.

He had equal amounts of common sense and gills.

If he was not experienced it could equalisation

Wow. I thought that was a thing old people made up to get their kids out the pool
Just couldn't hold his breath long enough. Went through with the proposal and swam away... never made it back to the surface

Too much water in his lungs.
1000 ways to die vibe
Why is "vibe" trendy?
I don’t fucking know… it stands for so much and yet… nothing at alll lol
What a breathtaking proposal.
Never marry a man who can’t be bothered to bring his own oxygen.
It looked so much cooler when he pictures it in his head
Did she say “yes”, though?
Yes but she hesitated for apparently too long.
She got the house she always wanted in the end.
This made me laugh
Well this is like 6 years old…and has been posted here a bunch since then
Good, glad I finally caught it.
Mrballen did a segment on this.
NOT PENNYS BOAT
Sounds like the ocean accepted his proposal.
Fun idea. Sad outcome. I suspect that she lost a good one. Condolences.
Home state Florida?
What a way to show your love
We're karmawhoring out ChillingScares' content now?

I think it was more like 32ft down
No, he's 6ft under
lol lol lol lol
This sub is so misanthropic and full of people starved of affection and love.
Living up to the redditor stereotype
Welcome!
Thanks. I've been here since it started.
Hahahahaha
See! He said it! Proof that nobody loves me! Assholes! I hate you all!
/s for my protection.
She woulda got the ick if he lived
Tell me he’s from FL.
Are we sure this isnt fake news? Its tge BBC after all..
I mean ,this doesnt seem like a darwin award, he just drowned while swimming.
You don't just swim 33ft below the surface by yourself and without an oxygen tank.
Sure you do. I used to do it all the time when I was younger, thats not that deep.
Back in my day, we swam 30 feet down and more! I remember once picking mushrooms off the well floor, 55' down!
I agree with the minority on this. No Darwin.

you clearly have no idea what a darwin award even is

How is this a Darwin Award. The guy downed swimming.
In just about the most preventable way possible. You don't free dive alone 850ft offshore without telling anyone.
Hos girlfriend as recording it. She knew. One would think that they had done something like this before since it's their third day, this time there was a complication.
Darwin award
Him: "I want to spend the rest of my life with you"
Her: "So that was a fucking lie"
I think not. It was the most truthful thing actually.
Well, he did. It's just that the rest of his life was measured in minutes.
