So the question is, why are most of the businesses in Danville look run down and no pride taken in the establishments? Exteriors and parking lots full of trash and debris. Lighting terrible inside and lights out on the outside. Goods sitting in the cases on the floor, just a shit hole of a business.
I mean, visit any of the retailers through out the city, IE Dollar General, Family Dollar, Dollar Tree, Ollies, Big Lots (when it was here), Roses and the appearance is nasty and not maintained. Have a critical eye next time you're in one, critique it well. Not an ounce of pride in the operation.
Danville is never going to excel until the people start to take pride in businesses, the side walks, the parking lots, fresh paint ..... .look at the fast food places, trash all over the lot because of the low classes tossing out the McDonalds bags or the drink cups.
We started looking to move here around 2020. We did a lot of research and took multiple day and weekend trips through Pittsylvania and surrounding counties. We settled on Danville because of the potential, but the town can't catch a a break.
Not too long ago the textile mills and tobacco farms provided a comfortable living for generations of people in the area. When the mills closed there was suddenly about two generation of workers who had the rug pulled out with no other skills to earn a decent living. Crime and drug use went up. Store fronts on Main St. and in the mall continued to close. People moved out of town and across the NC border for better opportunities. There was a shell of a town left.
Danville had a solid revitalization plan they researched and published around 2018. Lots of tax incentives from Fed/State/County/City to improve infrastructure and housing, bring in business, improve education, etc. And then COVID hit. A lot of the new and remaining old businesses closed. The town worked to get back on its feet, the Casino opened, and then the recent tariffs hit, along with loss of government funds for additional expansion, etc. The ripple effect of this is bigger than we can appreciate right now, imo.
Danville hasn't been stable long enough to attract and keep a lot of new talent. I think the casino might still be bussing in employees from Greensboro. If the town could continue a growth path without a major market changing surprise upheaval I think we'd start to see an improvement in employees and services across the board. In short, I have hope for the future, The last five years of pandemic impacts and crazy tariff/market conditions will level out at some point. I just hope its not too late.
It boils down to Danville's culture being sub par on just about anything and everything. Outback, Olive Garden (insert any other restaurant) just taste better in Gborro or elsewhere with better service. The only places I have found that are exceptions to this rule are small or self ran businesses where they care about how their every day interactions with the public that patron their establishment.
Like Bentto Japanese restaurant, definitely an exception. It rules!!
And La Nostra Cocina and the Mayflower
Mayflower is terrible. The only thing worse than their food, was the service.
I'll agree, maybe not great food or service, but we were talking about cleanliness
Hehehe ðŸ¤
No Walmart in history has ever felt like anything other than a Walmart.
Places like Walmart are the reason why a lot of smaller businesses closed up
To be fair, the Reidsville Walmart was recently remodeled (same with the one in Eden and Martinsville). IDK when Walmart will remodel the one in Danville, it could really use one IMO.
you are so right, it needs a redo.
Next year its getting done
Good to know. Target just revamped and the store is much brighter. Not sure if it's easier to find things but as long as I can find the frozen chocolate lava cakes and the CVS section I'm good to go. Meds and chocolate...yum!
All that aside….Dville Walmart is still and always has been a shit show!
Danville is poor. The people working the jobs you complain about are too poor to worry about anything other than survival
BS on that one, you can be poor and be proud. These people have a "I don't give a damn attitude". PLUS what have / are they doing to improve their situation? Complaining about it being someone elses fault.
You’re right. Start being part of the solution and clean up your community!
I have and I do, only to have it trashed again a few days later.
Then you're not making lasting change, you're painting over the decay.
Help fix the decay (hint: blaming the poor for not caring for the soulless corps that won't share the wealth is not the way).
You're out of touch.
Mr Crabs: "Money!"
The culture. You get the right "come-heres" there things will start to change.
The specific list of stores you're complaining about are all bottom-dollar places, and certain of them are notorious for being understaffed. That is a management-above-store-level decision. Danville is low-income overall, and has had years of economic hits, like losing Dan River Mills, textiles leaving the USA, tobacco being recognized as a health hazard, no significant new industrial recruiting for a long time, lack of actual interstate connector between Greensboro and Charlottesville/Staunton.
True a few years back, but no more. They can hire and they do hire sone good ones, but the vast majority just want a paycheck and don't care.
So, what you're saying is that wealthy folks whoop their kids ass on asile 10 just like we do ?
That Walmart is only nice cuz it’s been recently remodeled lmao
Facts 😂😂😂
Danville is so disenfranchised it seems in general. You have one side that wants change, another side that wants to keep it down. A dead mall pricing vendors out where theres no traffic. A mexican spot every corner and more coming. Traffic lights that take 3 to 5 minutes to change regardless of traffic.
Its a better place than it was 10 years ago but still not a place anyone whos been outside of town ever wants to actually invest in to live at. The ones that do are just the young bright eyed ones that are willing themselves into liking it
The part I don't get is all the efforts being put into downtown. I mean the city has dumped tons of money in the downtown area and it's for the benefit of those that work there not the poor peeps. Parking is so limited it's crazy.
Clean the trash off the flagpoles and maybe people will care about the trash on the ground.
Totally agree! When I first came here I was disgusted w how lazy people are and how dirty everything is. Worst place I ever lived!
