A large old growth tree stump with full grown trees growing on top of it

I think this stump would be considered what’s called a “nurse tree” or a “nurse log”. https://www.americanforests.org/article/nurse-logs-healers-of-the-forest/

Redwoods grow back from their stumps.

While youre correct those arent redwood growing out of it. Wrong bark.

My time as a near feral child tells me these look like evergreen or some type of fir tree maybe.

Correct. Hemlock are a nurse species. Growing out of “nurse logs” or dead stumps

So the notches on the side were for platforms the lumberjacks were standing on while sawing the tree?

    parent
    5 points FearAndLounging

    Yes. They are called springboards.

This is a classic nurse stump. The original tree was massive, then after it died the rotting wood fed new trees that rooted right on top of it. You’re basically looking at two generations of forest stacked together.

Beautiful. You can see three-generation versions of this in the forests of Yakushima.

    parent
  • 1 points earthbound_misfit42

Yeah those aren't fully grown trees. They are still growing.

Are you at Sea Ranch, by the way? There was a stump like that there ages ago that the locals said was home to a "friendly demon."
