The quagga was a unique subspecies of the plains zebra, distinguished by its half-striped, half-solid coat. That went extinct around 1883.

I read "distinguished" as "disgusted" at first and was wondering why they were so harsh on themselves. Love yourself boo.

    Pretty good photo for 1883.

Photos from that era are usually quite good.

Photos from that era are faded and hand colored, and this one looks like it was colorized in photoshop last week. Probably also had the gamma jacked to improve contrast.

It's a good photo but it's had some help.

Kind of looks like a zebroid (a zebra hybrid with another equine species).

Looks like a failed zebra experiment

Do you mean unique in that it is the only subspecies that is half-striped?

There is an organisation in South Africa that is bringing the Quagga Zebra back and they are having quite brilliant results 😁

Weren't they the inspiration for Jurassic Park?
