Jake's probably got a lot on his mind with the new baby and Olympics coming up next month. I'm really hoping he locks in, becomes Team USA's starting goalie, and returns on fire.
That's objectively not true. The shots/chances/expected goals against are virtually identical for both goalies. And DeSmith isn't just marginally better than Otter. The gap between them is significant so far.
Look up his stats when he was the starter… He’s been very good but he’s still not better than Otter. Like others have said in here, we’ve played way better in front of him than Otter.
He’s played pretty protected matchups, meaning he’s usually not facing tip-top offenses. As the last two games have shown, Carolina and a banged-up Washington squad are completely different animals, even on the second half of back-to-back games.
It’s like football: everyone loves the backup qb. Desmith is doing great in his role and needs to stay there. Otter typically gets the harder matchups and more workload so his numbers will skew lower. Otter is still the guy
If scouts thought he was starter worthy, we’d be getting calls like no other for a potential trade.
My final view is that he could be a career backup with us, potentially win a cup and enjoy the life of an above average backup goalie. Either way, he shouldn’t get equal share to otter and otters slump is 100% due to our defense at the moment.
He's been great. Was leading the lead in goals saved above expected for a while, but had a few "off" games recently. He looked like he locked back in last game though. Stud.
I love me some DeSmith. It makes me feel worlds better knowing that we have a fantastic back up who's reliable when Otter is having an off night. I haven't worried much with DeSmith in net this season! Otter is our play off beast and our main man, but DeSmith is a top tier back up goalie.
So glad we have him to pick up the slack when Otter starts to inevitably slip. I have learned Otter is our playoff goalie, he consistently delivers. Desmith doesn’t have much playoff experience because PDB hardly ever put him in but I think he’s making a solid case for playoff games as well and having 2 solid playoff goalies gives us something not a lot of other teams have
I hope that when we make it to the playoffs, we start Desmith every third or 4th game regardless just to keep otter rested and keep the other team on their toes. He's so good, especially in away games.
I looked at the NHL app and this list is accurate but for some reason they forgot the number 2. So number 3 is actually 2 and so forth, just bump everyone down a number.
Ive always been a big Otter fan, this season though he just isnt making the saves we need him to make. I think we start Casey for a bit until he gets his head straight. I know being a new dad is tough so he could probably use the rest as much as he probably doesnt want it.
obviously otter is your guy in the playoffs, but when the problem every year by the WCF is his “workload,” i can’t see how you don’t start desmith in a game or two if things get dire. he’s been excellent
You have to plan it ahead of time so Otter doesn’t feel like he’s being punished. You say Casey’s got game 3 and game 6 if necessary in each series. Stick to it.
Good goalie. Nice price. Very wow
Let's see Paul Allen's goalie
/thread
I'm not gonna suggest DeSmith should usurp the starter's role, but he has unquestionably been the better Stars goalie this year.
I'm sure Otter will get it figured out, but no reason not to feed DeSmith a healthy share of starts the way he's been playing.
I’m curious if we ride the hot hand and give Casey more starts than Jake in the short term to kinda light that fire under Jake.

Stars have played a lot better in front of DeSmith as well.
They often leave Otter out to dry.

been thinking this but too afraid to say
Casey is a solid BACKUP, nothing more
A solid backup performing noticeably better than the primary
Look up his stats when he was the starter… He’s been very good but he’s still not better than Otter. Like others have said in here, we’ve played way better in front of him than Otter.
So it’s not possible he has improved and Otter has declined?
He’s played pretty protected matchups, meaning he’s usually not facing tip-top offenses. As the last two games have shown, Carolina and a banged-up Washington squad are completely different animals, even on the second half of back-to-back games.
Otter let in all the goals but 1 against Carolina, Casey let in 1 goal.
This is it. Casey gets the starts against the bottom feaders. Every team does this.
It’s like football: everyone loves the backup qb. Desmith is doing great in his role and needs to stay there. Otter typically gets the harder matchups and more workload so his numbers will skew lower. Otter is still the guy
He plays easier matchups and teams.
He already had a short stint as starter in Pitt, but he's 34 lol, "he could be a career backup with us"
Hes small for todays nhl G standards, so he has aged better than most, but his career is on the back end, not just starting.
Maybe 90% due to our defense, 10% due to all the shit that comes along with a new baby.
Win a cup? You must mean lose in the conference finals lol
He's been great. Was leading the lead in goals saved above expected for a while, but had a few "off" games recently. He looked like he locked back in last game though. Stud.

We have another season of him at 1 at Mil too. He keeps this up he will get paid in 2028.

We are lucky to have a goalie like Casey as our backup.
Why is there not a #2 on this list?
I looked at the NHL app and this list is accurate but for some reason they forgot the number 2. So number 3 is actually 2 and so forth, just bump everyone down a number.
Great for us. Win games, keep otter fresh for the playoffs.
Ive always been a big Otter fan, this season though he just isnt making the saves we need him to make. I think we start Casey for a bit until he gets his head straight. I know being a new dad is tough so he could probably use the rest as much as he probably doesnt want it.
Didn't Wedgewood use to be our backup? Nice to see him doing so well, even with the hated and feared 'lanche.
My boi
No Wedge is ours still. so his stats count toward ours
Bout to take a long trip for work in that area so Im claiming him for stars RN
Well thats not gonna hold up now
I said Wedgewood > Otter and he got traded. I said DeSmith is as good as Otter and vastly cheaper. People get crusty. Time will prove me right again.
Great. Now DeSmith is getting traded.

Better than otter
