One person is dead and one person is in jail after a shooting at a DART train station on Thursday night, marking the third deadly incident involving DART in just a few months.
The shooting happened around 9:40 p.m. at the 8th and Corinth Station, one stop before the Dallas Zoo. DART police said the incident did not take place on a DART vehicle.
Victim killed in front of family
The victim has been identified as 28‑year‑old Erin LaJames Graham. His fiancée told CBS News Texas she was with him, along with his three stepchildren, when the shooting happened as the family was heading home from work.
"I'm kissing him and telling him, babe wake up, please wake up, wake up for me," she said. "For someone to just take his life like that in front of my kids, in front of myself, being his lover and his partner, it hurt me, because you're taking away a good person, not just from me, not just from his kids, from his family."
Suspect admits to shooting Graham
DART police identified the suspect as 18‑year‑old Demetrius Rogers, who is now in custody. According to Dallas County Jail records, Rogers is being held on a murder charge and no bond had been set as of Friday morning.
According to Rogers' arrest affidavit, he and his brother were walking past Graham when Rogers said, "Excuse me." Investigators say Graham responded, "excuse you," which Rogers told police offended his brother. The affidavit states that Rogers believed the two men were about to fight, which angered him. He admitted to pulling out a gun and shooting Graham in the chest.
Fiancée tried to save his life
"I tried to break it up the best I could," Graham's fiancée said, crying. "He fell to the ground. I was looking for an exit hole, I was looking for an entrance, and all I can remember is just him breathing heavy. My son was standing behind him when he got shot."
Graham was taken to a local hospital, where he died.
Recent DART violence raising concern
This marks the third deadly incident involving DART in recent months. In September, the manager of Po' Melvin's was killed on a DART train, and in October, another deadly shooting occurred near the Pearl/Arts District Station.
Family remembers Graham's character
Graham's fiancée described him as a devoted stepfather to her two sons and daughter. She said he was a comedian, a cook, and someone who "would give the shirt off his back" to help others.
"Every family gets together, he is barbecuing, cooking, playing music and dominoes," she said.
She now holds on to the moments and memories he left behind, hoping his life — not his death — defines his legacy.
"He didn't deserve none of that," she said. "We want justice for him. He shall get justice."
Family preparing funeral arrangements
The family is making funeral arrangements and has set up a GoFundMe page to help with expenses.
